EVENTS CASE STUDY Black Deer Festival Authentic Americana straight from Nashville hosted at one of the oldest deer parks in England GEORGE HARRISON Having produced many large scale events for others, Gill Tee created Black Deer seven years ago after a chance conversation with its first investor. Many award wins later, the festival’s success is down to the thought behind every touchpoint, enhancing attendees’ overall experience. We talk to Gill. Describe your event and how many people it attracts? At Black Deer we have done everything we can to stay true to the communities and cultures of Americana. Whether that is with the music we showcase, or the food that is on offer. Every touchpoint at the festival reflects the love that has gone into creating an inclusive world. It’s a world that welcomes people of all ages and offers families the chance to create memories that will last forever – kids can safely climb to the top of ancient oak trees, work together to help to build a wild west town or listen to stories around the campfire. Comfort is king, and we have gone to great lengths to provide first class production values, and a varity of on site accommodation, including really beautiful glamping options. The festival has grown over the years and we are looking to attract around 10,000 people per day this year. “ALTHOUGH THAT EVENT DID NOT END UP TAKING PLACE AT ERIDGE, I FORMED A GREAT RE- LATIONSHIP WITH THE OWNERS AND THE ESTATE MANAGER, AND WAS ASKED BY THEM TO HELP IN- CREASE THE LICENCE CAPACITY” Explain a bit about your venue and your history with it I discovered Eridge Estate over 15 years ago when I was asked by a client to look at the site for a potential event they wanted to do there. I just fell in love with the place; it’s so magical. It’s over 3,500 acres of amazing land with deers roaming and wild vistas. It is one of the oldest deer parks in England. Although that event did not end up taking place at Eridge, I formed a great relationship with the owners and the estate manager, and was asked by them to help increase the licence capacity. They had several licences, but none that would service a larger festival. It was always their ambition to have an event that would be part of the estate’s legacy. I never dreamed at the time that I would be bringing my own festival there, but when the decision was made to embark on the road to making Black Deer a reality, there was only one place it could be!
