GOBBLE GOODNESS Brockmann enjoys going to the cafe on Thanksgiving to socialize. Brockmann’s biggest joy out of raising turkeys is that it keeps him busy and interacting with a lot of different people. “People that age well are social,” he said. Nonetheless, he knows he can’t do this forever, for one reason or another. “I don’t know how much longer I’ll go,” Brockmann said. “I guess I’ll stop when I wear my friends out!” Brockmann has about eight friends and relatives that help out daily around the farm. Ron Oetzmann, 83, of Long Grove, has been helping Brockmann around the farm for 20 years now, ever since he retired from his day job. “I’d like at least one more year,” said Oetzmann. “Ron’s a fixture. He’s a good guy,” said Brockmann. Brockmann’s oldest son, Tom (no pun intended), rents all the farm ground, and farms close to 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans. Brockmann assists with whatever there is to do around the farm, while still taking care of his hundreds of turkeys and one bull and three heifers. Brockmann’s other son, Bill, is involved in making maple syrup in the spring. Each year he makes 100 gallons of maple syrup. Each gallon of syrup is made from 40 gallons of sap. Brockmann sells his son’s maple syrup on “Turkey Day,” along with a specialty Boetje’s mustard that uses the maple syrup in the recipe. When it comes time for the Brockmanns to make a turkey, “we don’t follow a recipe,” said Brockmann. “We prepare it in a cooking bag with seasonings and herbs.” Roy Cheshir, a friend of the Brockmanns, has his own favorite recipe. He requests the hearts, gizzards, and other turkey innards which he rolls in flour and meal. “I deep fry ‘em and eat ‘em,” Cheshir said.
