During the summer months, they grow peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, intoryi (an African eggplant), zucchini, and green beans at eight locations, including six in Davenport and one each in Rock Island and Bettendorf. An important aspect of site selection is the availability of water, whether it’s yard hydrants, large tanks perched on hills, or spigots on the sides of buildings. “We try to grow in neighborhoods that are food deserts,” she said, where access to fresh produce and healthy proteins are more limited. A new development that is a game changer for Tapestry is a hydroponics location that can grow up to six tons of produce annually and will double or triple the nonprofits production capacity each year. The John Deere Foundation provided a grant for the 320-square-foot unit, the infrastructure and a year of operating costs for a Freight Farms vertical growing unit – essentially a shipping container – that is located in the parking lot of the Quad City Botanical Center. The unit will produce butterhead lettuce and other leafy greens initially and will allow Tapestry to be able to grow something year-round. Laura Eberlin, global corporate social responsibility lead with the Deere foundation, said last fall that the project is an innovative approach to getting food and an important step to fighting hunger. Almost 15,000 people in Rock Island County struggle to put food on their family’s table, over 14,000 in Scott County. “Tapestry Farms is lever- Kevin Kilburg - 563-543-4459 Barn Phone- 563-652-5674 Bill Kilburg 563-357-0605 maquoketalivestockexchange.com maquoketalivestockexchange@gmail.com ALL SALES START AT 11:30 18140 33rd Street, Maquoketa (Take Hwy. 64 West past Theisens, then E. on 33rd St.) Join us for our free series designed to empower small acreage owners & beginning farmers!
