It’s how they’ve eaten,” she said, adding that they often go to work in factories or other non-agriculture settings. “Meanwhile there’s food insecurity that happens in our community. We pair that need with the skill set of growing food,” said McGlynn, who founded the nonprofit in 2017 after more than 20 years of working as a journalist and communications director. During those two decades, she wrote stories about people who came from different countries. She wrote about community systems and how they worked. Later, she worked for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Davenport. Those experiences got her thinking more about how to change the world for the better and what it takes to do that. “I learned about caring for others and how to do that in a way that’s respectful and compassionate at the same time,” she said. Her idea to create urban farms from under-utilized land took shape. Last year, eight different types of vegetables were delivered either the day of harvest, or very shortly after, throughout the growing season. Refugees are hired seasonally to plant, tend and harvest the crops, and they need little training, McGlynn said. “They just know what to do. They know how to tend a plot of land. They bring that knowledge and skill,” she said.
