18 CroMWell Cromwell Heritage Precinct Cromwell Heritage Precinct is tucked away on the shores of Lake Dunstan, at the confluence of the Kawarau and Clutha arms of the lake. The schist stone cottages and shops are tenanted by a range of stores including an arts collective, printmaker, goldsmith and a plant expert and maker of herbal creams and perfumes as well as unique gift outlets, cafes, fresh fruit ice cream shop and a cocktail bar as well as a bike rental store. The precinct is the official start of the Lake Dunstan Trail, which runs along the true right bank of Lake Dunstan down to Clyde where it links up with the Central Otago Rail Trail. Every day cyclists from around New Zealand and the rest of the world set off on the journey to Clyde, down the picturesque Cromwell Gorge. For those setting off from Clyde, the precinct is the welcome end to their journey and many take advantage of the cafes in the precinct for a welcome rest at the end of their 51km journey. Displays tell the story of the incredible 1860s gold rush, when sparsely populated Central Otago was suddenly inundated with thousands of hopeful prospectors. Children love the talking ‘locals’ who tell the yarns, life-size horses and secret alleyways, fairy doors as well as the ducks, fishing wharf and picnic areas.
