With a few easy rules and a writing trick or two…commas, semi-colons; periods. and spelling (sp?) can be readily mastered. Session B is a repeat of session A. R. 207 Critical Scenes Workshop (10 weeks) Dennis Foley Each novel stands or fails on many things, but one essential element all novels have in common is that they have anywhere from three to ten very critical scenes. They are the foundation of the skeleton of the novel. They make up the large loadbearing bones of the story. If done well, they carry the novel to success. If done poorly – disaster! Examine student scenes in a workshop format by exchanging scenes by email before each class and focusing on improving them in the classroom sessions. R. 207 Agents & Editors: The Pitch Perfect Way to Get Your Work Into Their Hands (3 weeks) Kathy Dunnehoff Have you completed or nearly completed a manuscript and are looking to break into the world as a published author? Are you seeking representation from a literary agent or looking at submitting directly to editors? If so, this class is for you. Gain an overview of the process for submitting work to an agent or editor. Complete a query letter and refine a one-sentence pitch of your novel when meeting with agents and editors. R. 207 18th Annual Flathead River Writers’ Conference Presented by the Authors of the Flathead and hosted by FVCC Pre-conference Workshops: Wednesday-Friday, October 1-3 Advanced workshops, each limited to 12 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Screenwriting workshop taught by Rick Reichman; non-fiction workshop taught by Cathy Scott. Fee: $350. General Conference: Saturday & Sunday, October 4 & 5 Writers of all levels are welcome. Saturday, each of the six speakers will give one-hour presentations. Sunday, all speakers will offer a selection of two-hour workshops. Attendance is limited to 100 and includes breakfast and lunch. CULTURE & RELIGION Native American Medicine Wheel (3 weeks; 5 sessions) Andrea Dunn Help create a visionary Native American Medicine Wheel on campus. Discovery includes the concept of the structure; travel to a wild and scenic river to collect the stones; and, individual exploration with the medicine wheel structure. Included in the cost listed is a $30 fee for a construction manual for the wheel and an individual birth chart-based on the wheel and Chinese numerology. Eiselein There are a wide range of spiritual beliefs and practices. Gain a basic overview both universalizing religions (such as Christianity and Islam) and ethnic religions (such as Hinduism and Judaism). The history and core beliefs will be compared. Also included will be the animistic traditions of Native Americans and modern Wiccans. Wednesdays 9/24-10/15 7-9 p.m. $59 HIST 1035A RH Bldg. R. 150 Ancient American Civilizations (4 weeks) E. B. Eiselein Survey several ancient American civilizations, including the Mississippian moundbuilders, the Anasazi, the Hohokam, the Olmec and Maya, and the Inka and their predecessors.
