FÉILE/CORK LIFELONG LEARNING FESTIVAL
A THRIVING FRIENDSHIP
The twinning of the two festivals was celebrated in March when the Lord Mayor of Cork invited Belfast’s Lord Mayor to join him in
launching the 9th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. In May a mural inspired by the Titanic was painted on Horgan’s Quay in Cork by
a group of young unemployed men, half from Tar Isteach in North Belfast, the others from Cork’s Mahon Community
Development Project, working with Frank Quigley and Michael Doherty of the Belfast Artists Collective. In 2011 the Mahon Men’s
Art Group also worked with artists from the Collective to create a mural next to Blackrock Castle in Cork during the Lifelong
Learning Festival. That group were guests during the last Féile: their legacy - a mural on Northumberland Street, which features
Cork’s coat of arms, and sporting legends Christy Ring & Roy Keane. Four youth leaders from Belfast & Lisburn travelled to Cork in
April, learning how to build & row currachs with Meitheal Mara, the traditional boat builders – skills they are passing on to their
young people. This follows on the success of last year, when two youth groups were involved in a cross-community boat building
project in Cork and Belfast. The finished currachs were launched by the Mayor of Lisburn during Féile last August. Over the June
Bank Holiday weekend, a team of young people brought their currach back to Cork to take part in the annual Ocean to City rowing
race – and won the Youth category. Féile was also represented at Cork City Marathon with four walkers led by Kevin Morrison
taking part. A Cork team took part in Belfast City Marathon; and it is hoped to build on these sporting links, as well as continue
other projects. Cork’s participation in these activities is supported by Cork City Council and Co-operation Ireland’s Cork branch.
