The Re-building of Bombay Street<br />

In 1969 Belfast’s Bombay Street was burnt to the<br />
ground. In 1970 Irish speakers from the Shaw’s<br />
Road Gaeltacht re-built it. Tobar Productions’ film<br />
(funded by the Irish L<strong>an</strong>guage Broadcast Fund<br />
<strong>an</strong>d TG4) documents the re-building of the<br />
houses. Seán Mac Seáin, one of the key players throughout, will give his<br />

of Doreen Lawrence whose son<br />
Stephen was murdered in <strong>an</strong><br />
unprovoked racist attack in<br />
1993. He was a teenager, good<br />
at art <strong>an</strong>d maths <strong>an</strong>d<br />
dreamed of becoming <strong>an</strong><br />
architect. Doreen Lawrence,<br />
Stephen’s mother, tells the<br />
story of her long fight for<br />
justice against the most<br />
powerful institutions in<br />
Britain, the police, the criminal justice<br />
system <strong>an</strong>d the government, during which she exposed institutional<br />
racism <strong>an</strong>d wrought wide r<strong>an</strong>ging legal <strong>an</strong>d social ch<strong>an</strong>ges. On 3rd<br />
J<strong>an</strong>uary 2012, two men were finally convicted for the racist murder of<br />
Stephen. In memory of her son, Doreen established the Stephen<br />
Lawrence Trust to combat social injustice, by promoting equality of<br />
opportunity, good race relations <strong>an</strong>d the elimination of racial<br />

Professor Martin Caraher (Centre for Food Policy at City University, London) outlines the ch<strong>an</strong>ges in<br />
the global <strong>an</strong>d national economics of Europe<strong>an</strong> countries that are bringing about the (re)emergence<br />
of hunger, as well as increases in chronic heart diseases <strong>an</strong>d c<strong>an</strong>cers. Simult<strong>an</strong>eously, ch<strong>an</strong>ges in<br />
m<strong>an</strong>y national welfare systems are creating new groups of food vulnerable <strong>an</strong>d food poor. Ironically,<br />
the same people who are hungry are also those who are overweight. This is the new face of food<br />
poverty in the 21st century.<br />
