The Re-building of Bombay Street
St Oliver Plunkett Parish Hall, Glenveagh Drive,
Lenadoon, Tues 7th Aug, 7pm
In 1969 Belfast’s Bombay Street was burnt to the
ground. In 1970 Irish speakers from the Shaw’s
Road Gaeltacht re-built it. Tobar Productions’ film
(funded by the Irish Language Broadcast Fund
and TG4) documents the re-building of the
houses. Seán Mac Seáin, one of the key players throughout, will give his

of Doreen Lawrence whose son
Stephen was murdered in an
unprovoked racist attack in
1993. He was a teenager, good
at art and maths and
dreamed of becoming an
architect. Doreen Lawrence,
Stephen’s mother, tells the
story of her long fight for
justice against the most
powerful institutions in
Britain, the police, the criminal justice
system and the government, during which she exposed institutional
racism and wrought wide ranging legal and social changes. On 3rd
January 2012, two men were finally convicted for the racist murder of
Stephen. In memory of her son, Doreen established the Stephen
Lawrence Trust to combat social injustice, by promoting equality of
opportunity, good race relations and the elimination of racial

discusses the issues facing members of Ethnic Minority communities
residing in West Belfast, and makes a number of important
recommendations for change. Speakers - Bernadette McAliskey (activist
and veteran civil rights campaigner) & Barbara Muldoon (immigration

The Annual Belfast Trust/Féile Lecture - Food Poverty

Professor Martin Caraher (Centre for Food Policy at City University, London) outlines the changes in
the global and national economics of European countries that are bringing about the (re)emergence
of hunger, as well as increases in chronic heart diseases and cancers. Simultaneously, changes in
many national welfare systems are creating new groups of food vulnerable and food poor. Ironically,
the same people who are hungry are also those who are overweight. This is the new face of food
poverty in the 21st century.
