Bronagh Lawson spent 13 years working on development projects<br />
on Peace lines in Belfast before returning to her artistic practice. She<br />
has been working with Sue Ellen Semekoski (School of Art Institute,<br />
Chicago) on different models where art has been used as a healing<br />
tool. Recently returned from Chicago she will talk about work going<br />
on there <strong>an</strong>d how the learning resonates here. In partnership<br />

the author of ‘Bobby S<strong>an</strong>ds’ Comrade; Women <strong>an</strong>d War in<br />
the North of Irel<strong>an</strong>d’. Duchatel work is in publishing <strong>an</strong>d<br />
focuses on North/ South relations <strong>an</strong>d development<br />
issues. She tr<strong>an</strong>slated Denis O’Hearn’s biography on<br />
Bobby S<strong>an</strong>ds, ‘Nothing But <strong>an</strong> Unfinished Song’ into<br />
French. Q & A. An historical exhibition of Irish <strong>an</strong>d<br />
international women in struggle will be on show. Chair -<br />

Speakers - Brid Keen<strong>an</strong> (Gestalt therapist) & Philip McTaggart.<br />
Combatting the stigma of suicide within our communities;<br />
highlighting mental wellbeing, resilience <strong>an</strong>d suicide awareness. Brid<br />
will speak about tr<strong>an</strong>sgenerational trauma at the level of families,<br />
communities <strong>an</strong>d society. Oscailt in partnership with PIPS.<br />

‘An Undesirable Alien’<br />

Decl<strong>an</strong> Bree on the life of Jimmy Gralton, the great Leitrim<br />
socialist born in 1886, who became involved in the labour<br />
struggles in USA. He was active in New York’s Connolly Club which<br />
included Jim Larkin, Nora Connolly <strong>an</strong>d Liam Mellows. His activism<br />
upon his return to Irel<strong>an</strong>d in the 1930s resulted in a deportation<br />
order being issued by De Valera’s new Fi<strong>an</strong>na Fail government<br />
against this “undesirable alien”. Jimmy snubbed the order <strong>an</strong>d<br />
went on the run, defended by the leading left-wing campaigners<br />
of the time.<br />

Mairead Corrig<strong>an</strong> Maguire cofounded<br />
the Peace People with<br />
Betty Williams in 1976, both<br />
winning the Nobel Peace Prize.<br />
Lauded internationally for her<br />
st<strong>an</strong>ce, opinions about Mairead<br />
tended to be polarised in West<br />
Belfast. Mairead’s campaigning<br />
work on Palestine led to her arrest<br />
in 2010 as part of <strong>an</strong> aid flotilla<br />
defying the Israeli naval blockade<br />
of Gaza. “Whilst some people’s<br />
political viewpoints <strong>an</strong>d attitudes<br />
towards violence have ch<strong>an</strong>ged<br />
since 1976, Mairead Corrig<strong>an</strong><br />
Maguire has remained a pacifist <strong>an</strong>d consistently promoted nonviolence.”<br />
