In 1971 when the first Irish primary school was set up by its members it had only a halfdozen pupils. Now, there are 20 Irish nurseries, 9 primary schools, and a secondary school, Coláiste Feirste. Musician and researcher Marcas Ó Murchú explores the history of Chluain Ard & the involvement of his late father, language activist Alf from Sevastopol Street. Irish & English. Illustrated by exclusive archival footage. Chair – Jim Gibney. ‘The Wee Yard’ - Workman Clark: Forgotten Shipbuilders of Belfast Hollywood Arches Library, Thurs 2nd Aug, 6pm Speaker – John Lynch. Founded in 1879-80 Workman Clark (closed 1935) was always known as the ‘Wee Yard’, eclipsed by neighbouring Harland & Wolff. Yet as early as 1896 it took sixth place amongst British shipbuilders in terms of tonnage produced and by 1909 it employed 9,000 men! It is a story of early struggle, nepotism, technical innovation, and huge success before WWI, and of “a good solid financial scandal” to round off the story! The answer of one of those who led the Easter Rising, James Connolly, was ‘Yes’ - and his vision was the Workers Republic. Has the time come to begin a process of its rediscovery?
