YEAR END RECEIPTS
charitable contribution of $250 or more. The
Share Foundation would be happy to provide
you a receipt for your donations given in
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BLANEY...
Ah, there are traces of Christmas still with us. Discarded Christmas trees waiting at the curbs, Aunt
Kate’s shirt a-wearing even though it’s a bit tight – just temporarily – and many happy memories that keep
flashing in the minds of grandparents. God is good! We have much to be thankful for. We can also renew
our New Year resolutions. Losing weight is probably at the top of the list – but give the monies saved on
foods to the needy.
More patience with the children who talk incessantly or never. Everyone is different for some reason.
How’s about more courtesy while driving. We all have to get someplace fast and for really no
particular reason. We would be happier on arriving if there were a bit of courtesy in driving.
And especially a good New Year’s resolution should be thanking God for the activities of the day –
each night.
New Years resolutions are good. We often forget our human side as we try to exist as some sort of
machine. That is not why God created us – to be a machine.
Happy New Year! Be Happy with New Year Resolutions.
THOUGHTS FROM THE EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR
By Kathleen Kelly
When I was growing up, time seemed to move slowly. I was always waiting for a special
occasion; for Christmas to arrive, for school to end so summer vacation could begin, and even
waiting for summer to end so I could begin a new school year with a new teacher and old friends. I
complained that time passed too slowly while my mother told me that the older I got, the faster time
would go. Of course, Mom was right and now I lament the days that are over before I know it and
the years that seem to fly by. How can it be 2005 already? Where did the year go?
Last year at Sharing Meadows was busier than usual and filled with milestones. We celebrated
the 10 year anniversary of our residential program shortly after we opened the third village and
welcomed new Villagers and stewards to our community. I am always amazed at the growth of the
Villagers and am so proud of the efforts they have shown and the successes they’ve achieved under
the nurturing eyes of the caring, sharing stewards. The new Villagers blended right in to the point
that if you saw all of the Villagers interacting you wouldn’t be able to tell who’s lived here 10 years
from who’s lived here a few months. What a joyful sight to witness!
2004 was also the 10th anniversary of our Leprechaun Hunt© and we celebrated with a trip to
Ireland for 2 and a bigger pot of gold for the top leprechaun. It was our best ever with the biggest
crowd we’ve ever hosted and a delightful experience for all of the participants. The event was
sandwiched between summer camp and the arrival of the modular houses for the 3rd village so it was
a busy time that also passed quickly!
Ground was broken last year for the guesthouse with completion expected in the spring and we
are looking forward to welcoming guests to the community of Sharing Meadows. Time marches on
as we get caught up in strengthening our current programs and embarking on new ones in the quest
of providing fullness of life to our other abled friends. It’s good to be busy even though I realize that
the heightened activities will cause time to continue to race by.
2004 was a great year for Sharing Meadows and I know that 2005 will be even better! This is
a great place to be and the best is yet to come!
Happy New Year!
CONTINUING THE DREAM
Share Foundation’s Capital Fund Drive is underway with a
goal of raising $1,645,000! We have seen much goodness in the
community of Sharing Meadows and the time has come to expand
and share it with others. Father Blaney’s dream of providing a
peaceful place where other abled people would be empowered to
grow to become the person God created them to be has become
your dream too, as you embraced our mission and have done so
much to make it successful. Now the time has come to continue
the dream with construction of two additional villages and a
guesthouse.
We are conducting the Capital Fund Drive entirely with
volunteers. No professional fundraisers have been hired so all of
the money raised goes directly into the drive to support the growth
of Sharing Meadows.
$1,645,000
$514,000
We have a great cause! The campaign runs for four years so
pledged gifts can be paid monthly or yearly. A pledged gift of
$500 amounts to just $10 a month; a gift of $50 per month would add up to be $2500! Your
pledge will make a difference! Please respond positively to the letter you received by
returning your pledge card today. Please help us continue the dream of Sharing Meadows by
supporting our Capital Fund Drive. Spreading out your commitment over four years makes
it affordable to everyone. Your gift will make a difference!
GOLDEN COUPLE
CELEBRATE
On January 8, 2005, Robert (Bob) and
Shirley Ladendorf will celebrate their 50 th
wedding anniversary. For more than two-fifths
of their married life together, Bob and Shirley
have supported Share Foundation through their
volunteer efforts – Shirley at the helm and Bob
on her crew. Shirley served as chairperson for
the annual golf outing for years, a leadership
position that entailed supervising all aspects of
the event. Bob maintained the beverage cart at
the function. His duties commenced before the
event as he helped pick up the refreshments
from donor businesses.
Using her God-given talents and skills,
Shirley serves as the chairperson for The
Luncheon, an event sponsored annually by the
Share Foundation’s Service League. Bob’s
contributions to this event are more subtle. He
patiently helps fill countless cream puffs – a
popular dessert at The Luncheon! Bob also
assumes the important role of delivering the
delicious, luncheon food to the hall where the
event occurs.
God blessed the Share Foundation with
these two loving, caring and giving individuals.
May He continue to bless Bob and Shirley with
good health and a strong marriage for many
years to come!
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN INTERN
by Elizabeth Galezio
Senior, Notre Dame University
Editor’s Note: Share Foundation was privileged to have a Notre Dame student do an internship with us this fall.
Preparing to enter into my fourth and final year at Notre Dame, I started to panic. I became even more panicked when,
while composing my very first resume, I realized that all of my activities and accomplishments over the past three years fit easily
onto one page. Luckily, salvation came my way in the form of the Political Science Internship program, where I found out about
the internship learning how to write grants for the Share Foundation. I have always had an interest in non-profit work as well
as in writing, so I eagerly applied for this internship.
What began as merely an activity to serve as a resume booster quickly turned into a much more meaningful experience.
From the moment I came to the Share Foundation, the beauty of the location and the warmth of the staff struck me. Father
Blaney took me on a tour of Sharing Meadows, and I was left breathless by both the sheer size of the property, as well as the
sheer size of his love for his project. So much of the imagery I used in my grant applications was derived from the images that
I recalled from my first impression of Share Foundation.
My second formative experience at Share Foundation was equally as profound as my first. I attended the camp counselor
orientation so that I could acclimate myself with the various programs offered by Share Foundation. After the orientation, the
camp counselors and myself filed into the hall of the St. Timothy Center to greet the campers. As the campers entered the hall,
eager to embark upon their weekend of fun and adventures, their acceptance and interest in me was overwhelming. I cannot
remember the last time in my life when I was in a room full of strangers, but did not feel awkward for an instant. It was such a
surreal experience, being in a place where nobody has any pretensions, there are no exclusive cliques, and there is no nasty
chatter.
In addition to the touching experiences I had, I also accomplished a substantial amount of work. Throughout the course
of my three-month internship, I ended up composing a portfolio of potential grant makers, writing five letters of inquiry, and
working on two grant proposals. It was truly a tiring, yet rewarding time!
Ending this internship, I take with me not only my invaluable experiences and accomplishments, but also precious
knowledge. Under the aegis of Dr. Karen Bishop Morris, I have learned far more than any semester in college can teach a person.
I used to joke with my friends that my internship was more of a free, personal writing lesson. She spent countless hours working
with me on my writing skills and teaching me the ins and outs of how to write a successful grant. Thanks to her, I feel very
comfortable in the grant writing process, and hope to continue this kind of work someday. I also feel certain that my improved
skills in articulating my ideas will help me when filling out my extensive law school applications!
My time at the Share Foundation was more just an internship. Initially, when I composed grant letters, I found myself
referring to the Share Foundation as “they.” “They” have a program that does this; “they” have a staff that does that. However,
the more visits I made to the Share Foundation and the more interaction I had with the staff and the Villagers, I noticed myself
using “we” instead of “they.” My letters changed from a cold, impersonal description of an organization, into a warm account
of an organization that I have grown to consider myself a part of. I cherish all of the memories that I have made here, and am
hoping to keep in close contact with all of my newfound friends.
CAMP CORNER
Happy New Year to campers and staff!! There is no mini-camp in January, but we are working
hard to prepare for a great spring season. Camp is held in the St. Timothy Center at Sharing
Meadows, where we sleep in bunk beds, enjoy meals and crafts in the dining room and dance the
night away in the great hall. Each weekend camp starts at 7:00 p.m. Friday evenings and ends at 2:00
p.m. Sunday afternoons. Continuing with the theme we started in the fall, the spring camp will focus
on the Fruits of the Spirit, specifically kindness, goodness, faithfulness and gentleness. Through our
discussions, crafts and activities we will learn about each fruit and how we can demonstrate that
quality in our lives. Camp is a joyful time of sharing our feelings and emotions and truly listening
to others experiences. Campers and staff depart on Sunday afternoon feeling refreshed and happy,
many touched by God’s presence. What a great way to start the New Year! The dates for spring minicamps
are: February 11 – 13, March 11 – 13, April 15 – 17 and May 13 – 15.
Staff – If you have been a counselor, cook or nurse recently watch your mailbox later this month
for a staff response sheet for you to indicate which months you are available to serve. If you have
not volunteered at Camp Sharing Meadows before and would like to give it a try, please contact
Michelle at 219-778-2585. We would love to see some new faces this spring!
Campers – Applications will be sent out later this month for the spring season! If you attended
camp this fall, you will only need to complete a medication sheet instead of the entire application.
The registration fee remains at $70 for the weekend. As always, applications are accepted on a first
come, first serve basis, so don’t delay in sending your paperwork back to us. If you would like to
receive an application and are not sure if you are on the list, please call the office at 219-778-2585
and we will be happy to send you some information.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone in February!
