12 Shipbuilding at its most effective The 600 t/800 t cranes provides great flexibility in equipping the blocks. These are built and equipped directly next to the construction dock. The crane then sets them into the dock where they are welded to the ship. The AIDAbella nearing completion. Modular construction: units are put together in the mechanical engineering section, thus simplifying the overall production of the supply and disposal systems.

Steel panels are turned into sections, sections are turned into blocks. A ship is made up of about 70 blocks which weigh up to 800 tons. The technical equipment and fittings are also preassembled as far as possible before the blocks are put together to make up the ship.
