Background and Aim The African private sector and African civil society are important stakeholders in the implementation of NEPAD. Increasing their involvement in the design and execution of NEPAD programmes and projects will enhance the effectiveness of the NEPAD process. This publication was developed out of a series of consultation over the past six years that have looked at the ways and means required to more fully integrate these two pivotal resources into the mechanisms that have been established to facilitate the NEPAD programme. This report builds on the intellectual input that went into the planning and coordination of the “Forum on NEPAD” and the various themes discussed during the meeting. Additionally, it seeks to chart a way forward for NEPAD’s planning and implementation processes to become more accessible to the African civil society and the private sector. The dialogue on what is required to deepen the involvement of the private sector and civil society in NEPAD has been an on-going one since the inception of the initiative. Since the first meeting in 2003, almost on an annual basis, at least one “Ad-hoc” expert group/ workshop meeting has been brought together by the United Nations (Office of the Special Advisor on Africa or the Economic Commission for Africa) and AU/NEPAD to discuss the subject. The fact that the themes have recurred may suggest that implementation of various recommendations in this regard are still facing serious challenges. The previous discussions and meetings include, but are not limited to, the following: a.
