The idea to produce an advocacy material targeting two
critical segments of NEPAD stakeholders---the private
sector and civil society organizations--- was mooted in
2008 as a way of assessing the gaps and determining what
could be done to deepen ownership and partnership of
stakeholders as we approached ten years of NEPAD.
The idea materialized in the form of this joint publication
of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the
NEPAD Planning and Coordination Agency (NPCA), prepared
by Michael Sudharkasa, an independent Consultant,
in the framework of ECA’s support to the African Union
and its NEPAD Programme.
The work was carried out under the overall leadership of
Emmanuel Nnadozie, Director of ECA’s Economic Development
and NEPAD Division (EDND) and the supervision
of Bankole Adeoye, Chief of Staff at the NEPAD Agency,
Kwabia Boateng, Chief of NEPAD Support Section at ECA
and Rawda Omar-Clinton, Economic Affairs Officer, who
provided crucial guidance to the Consultant.
The first draft of the book was written in the period before
NEPAD was fully integrated into the structures and
processes of the African Union, transforming the NEPAD
Secretariat into the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating
Agency. There was, therefore, the need to review and update
the draft and revalidate the data. This crucial task was carried
out by Adeyinka Adeyemi, EDND’s Senior Regional
Adviser, with the assistance of Aissatou Gaye, Economic
Affairs Officer, Samson Kwalingana, Economic Affairs
Officer and Jymdey Yeffimo, an ECA Consultant with the
Macro-economic Analysis Section of EDND.
Earlier drafts of this document were reviewed by members
of ECA’s NEPAD Support Section and the NEPAD Agency.
