Hope and longings, companionship and pleasing speech, fruits of sacrifice, sons,<br />

animals and all else are robbed of a person of little intelligence, in whose house a<br />

Brahmin remains unfed.<br />

itsa`ao ra~Iya-dvaa%saIagaR-ho mao AnaSnana\ ba`*mannaitiqana-masya: |<br />

namasto|stu ba`*mana\ svaist mao|stu tsmaa%p`it ~InvaranvaRNaIYva || 9 ||<br />

You, an honoured Brahmin guest, who have waited in my home for three days<br />

without food, receive my obeisance. Peace be with me. In return (receive from me)<br />

three boons‟.<br />

Bhashya :<br />

“[%yau> sa yama: tM tu saMpUjyaadat\ var~yama\ ||” - Thus spoken by his wife, Yama<br />

granted the three boons with due honour.<br />

Further Explanation:<br />

Three days of stay in Death‟s dwelling place, with no food or water, Nachiketa‟s<br />

soul became purified and pure. For indeed restraint on the in taking food is the<br />

initial step in intense austerity for perfected penance, Verily food is Life and its<br />

absence is Death. Therefore to have Death;s presence Nachiketa resorts to<br />

relinquishment of food. In Patanjal yoga absitanance of food is sure gateway of<br />

supernal endowments.And surely Machiketa is assired of three boons for<br />

relinquishing food for three days.<br />

Upanishad:<br />

SaantsaMklp: saumanaa yaqaa syaat\ vaItmanyaugaaO-tmaao maa|iBa maR%yaao |<br />

%va%p`saRYTM maa\iBa vadot\ p`tIt ett\ ~yaaNaaM p`qamaM varM vaRNao || 10 ||<br />

Peaceful of mind, well disposed, as he was earlier, with anger expunged, let<br />

Gautama (my father) be gracious to me and recognize me, greet me, when freed by<br />

you. This, I choose, as my first of the boons.<br />
