16A(P,C) In Westland TT T O&E Thursday, September 9, 1982 County clinic plan wins panel's nod Plans for a modern, out-patient clinic to be built on Wayne County General Hospital grounds by the University Medical Affiliates, a professional nonprofit corporation, were approved in concept recently by members of the county Human Resources Committee. The plans are subject to a report from the county's corporation counsel due next month. According to Michael W. Bradley, chairman of the County Board of Institutions, the $150,000 free-standing, 23,000-square-foot clinic will replace the present "N" building facility, considered old, spartan and unattractive to new patients. Bradley said the modular facility will accommodate all clinic operations currently housed in "N" building. Appearing before the Human Resources Committee, Hospital Administrator E.J. Conklin said the professional coporation has agreed to entirely fund the project on the hospital grounds directly north of the existing parking lot. It hopes to complete construction this fall. The LIMA, P C. is seeking a 99-year, $l-per-year land lease. "We strongly believe that this project is paramount to the hospital's viability, since the general medicine clinics are a principle 'gateway' to the insitution,* Dr. Conklin said. The clinic will add to the present cash-flow of the WCGH. The pro iect is actually being fi- nanced by members of the MSP program, a co "poration of doctors formed a year ag6 to provide service to the hospital. The MSP (Medical Service Plan) was organized in June of 1981 by staff physicians who opted to (work un- own corporate structure continue as employees of der their rather thai the WCGH. Accord- ing to Isenstein only medical doctors may become stockholders in the University Medical Affiliates, P.C. and the proposed clinic will be staffed by MSP doctors anc( hopital nurses. The exhibit will feature the works of Johnnie Crosby, Beth Hull and Katie Fox. Johnnie s current watercolors reflect her love of nature — sand dunes, mountains, rocks, trees, flowers, ocean birds and people She has expressed her impressions by use of the versatile medium of watercolor in many moods from realistic, collages to abstract. Her work has received numerous awards and may be seen in corporate and private collections She has exhibited in nine of the Michigan Watercolor Society exhibitions as well as Watercolor U.S.A., a national show; the Butler Institute Show; Scarab Club exhibits in Detroit; Hartland shows and may others. Beth Hull's works were exhibited in this year's Michigan Watercolor Society Show and the All Michigan Show in Battle Creek Katie Fox has exhibited at several local galleries and also will be in the Plymouth Community Arts Council show Saturday and Sunday in Central Middle School. She has earned a reputation for producing fine batiks. One of the most exciting aspects of their visit was a ride in a glider One of Sam's classmates, Ernie Schweitzer, went on to New York University and earned his degree in aeronautical engineering. He and his two brothers started a glider manufacturing business in Elmira Come World War II, the Schweitzer Bros plant built 70 per cent of the gliders used by the U.S. military services. They still manufacture gliders and crop dusters. Sam says the sail-plane pilots use the thermals (hot air rising) to stay aloft. They keep an eye out for hawks who use the thermal currents and spot them for the pilots. Their pilot said he had seen as many as 100 hawks'in one area. Evidently the world's glider record is 1,000 miles out and 1,000 miles back The Hudsons said the landing was gentle on bare grass at a speed of about 40 miles per hour. We have been overwhelmed by the response of the people who have tried to meet our needs It has been a source of strength to all of us. "For the many who came to Ed's memorial service, offered prayers, sent cards and flowers, provided food of every kind and donated to the the memorial fund, we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. "The memorial fund has been converted to a scholarship fund (The Ed Kleinsmith Scholarship Fund), and a scholarship will be awarded every every year to a graduate of the Plymouth-Canton Schools.' They will gather at the Plymouth Cultural Center Monday evening for their first meeting of the new season. As is usual for IT .embers of the Plymouth Rock and Mineral Society, the program for the kickoff meeting is a show and tell session. Treasures acquired during summer vacations are displayed and discussed. The majority of the members specialize. President Bart Quel o collects copper. He has some large chunks pure >pper from the Upper Peninsula. A resident'of Plymouth, Quello works for Ford Motor Co. Bertha Djer of Plymouth is co-vice president of the society. She creates Ming trees from copper wire and polish ed stones. Another co- ^ice president is Dave Thomas of Marge Collins collects Herkimer diamonds tenaw Community College. Mildred Torikka of Plymouth is treasurer. She and her husband, Ralph, belong to the club. They do their rock and mineral hunting from the vantage point of their cottage in the Upper Peninsula. .Secretary Ted Kjlish of Plymouth Township makes jewelry from the gemstones he collects. One of the better known members of the society is Martha Davis, who shares her knowledge and collection with students in the schools. She has a special program which she gears to the ages of the children in the classrooms. Collecting is a family hobby for some members. Family memberships in the society are $5 for one year. Individual memberships are $2.50. New members are welqome to attend the first meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13. Those wishing more information may call Dave Thomas, 453-7402.
