• FALL SOFTBALL
Who says softball is a summertime
sport?
The Canton Parks and Recreation
department is sponsoring a fall softball
league, starting the second week in
September. Teams will play twice a
week for five weeks There will be two
divisions, one playing on Mondays and
Wednesdays and the other on Tuesday
and Thursdays
A sponsor's trophy will be awarded
to the two division champions. For further
information, call the Canton Parks
and Recreation at 397-1000.
• TENNIS TOURNEY
The Plymouth YMCA is sponsoring
an Open Tennis Tournament Sept. 18
and 19 at the Plymouth Canton courts.
Competition is in eight different divisions:
men's singles, women's singles,
men's 35 and over singles, women's 35
and over singles, boys' 18 and under
singles, girls' 18 and under singles,
men's doubles and women's doubles.
Matches are best two out of three
sets, with a nine-point tiebreaker when
tied at six games each.
Entry deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday,
Sept. 15. Cost is $4 for junior singles, $5
for adult singles, and $6 for all doubles.
Registration forms are available at
the Plymouth YMCA, 292 South Main.

• FALL RUN
Three different races — covering
one, three and five miles — are slated
for Sunday, Sept. 26, in Plymouth.
The runs start at 9 a.m. and will
wind through the scenic streets of
Plymouth. Prizes will be awarded to
top finishers in each of seven age divisions
for both males and females.
Costs for the runs, sponsored by the
Plymouth YMCA, are $4 for the 1 mile
event and $6 for the 3 and 5 milers if
registered the day before the race. The
day of the race the entry fee is $6 for
the 1 mile and $7 for the longer races.
Check-in is at 8:45 a.m. at Kellogg
Park. Entry forms are available at the
YMCA office at 292 South Main. For
further information, call 453-2904.

Canton men and women can enjoy a
night of recreation at Field Elementary
School every Wednesday starting
Oct. 13.
Sponsored by the Canton Parks and
Recreation department, the Recreation
night will feature exercise and volleyball
for women and basketball for men.
The 10-week session will allow the
women to take to the gym from 6:15
p.m. to 8 p.m. and the men from 8-9:45
p.m.

Ironically, the track in Montreal
was named after the late Gilles Villenueve
just prior to the race.
And then in late July, Jim Hickman,
the 1982 Indianoplis Rookie of
the Year, died from injuries sustained
in a crash while attempting to qualify
for the Provimi Veal, Tony Bentenhaussen
200-mile race at the Wisconsin
State Fairgrounds Park.
In three months, death had taken
four prominent drivers out of the
sport.
Inexperience and driver error were
the reasons given for all of the deaths.
Smalley and Hickman were relatively
young drivers in the Championship
Car Circuit that is dominated by
older men.
Villeneuve was an experienced
driver who, it was said, should have
known better, while experts have said
that in the case of Paletti's death, an
experienced driver would not have
made the mistake that cost the Italian
his life.

THE FOUR deaths in auto racing
has turned 1982 into one of the grimmest
years in motor s|>orts history.
But also, I think the deaths have
shown that the world of auto racing is
reaching a turning point.
The technology that goes into building
these racing machines has passed
the ability of a man to handle them
Technology has made it possible to
build a car that can go faster than
what can be safely manuevered by a
man sitting behind the steering wheel.
This is what is happening in auto racing
today.
The main culprit in this new technology
is the use of "ground effects."
The term ground effects means
channeling air through the car to actually
cause a vacuum that sucks to
the car to the racing surface, thus allowing
the drivers to go faster
through the turns.
Though ground effects don't really
add any horsepower or a new top
speed, they do allow drivers to go
faster in the corners and give the
drivers a false sense of security while

The reason men constantly keep
pushing themselves and their machines
faster and faster is to please
the fans. And if you aren't moving
forward you are either standing still
or going backwards, and either of the
latter two is something you don't say
in motor racing.
Speed is intoxicating, and the 200
mph mark has become a magic number.
IT HAS been said many times that
people only turn out at motor-sport
events to see a crash.
I think this if true, in some instances,
with the fans. I believe most
racing fans like to see crashes but
would not like the drivers to get hurt
The problem with crashing at 200
mph, though, is that drivers do get
hurt — seriously hurt.
But one of the enticing aspects of
the sport is the imminent danger that
if a man makes a mistake while driving,
he could pay with his life — the
ultimate price.
