8A(P,C) O&E Thursday, September 9, 1982 brevities • DOUBLE TROUBLE Sept. 16 — A potluck dinner and guest speaker sponsored by the Plymouth-Canton Mothers-of-Twins Club takes place at 6 p.m. at Nancy Hogg's house, 9283 Joy Rd., Plymouth. Bill Nichols will speak on Reyes Syndrome and will be accompanied by a physician from Oakwood Hospital who will answer any questions. All mothers of multiple births are welcome. Call 981- 5105 for more information. • DANCE CLASSES OFFERED Ballet and tap dance classes for youngsters between 4 and 10 years of age are offered by the Canton Parks and Recreation Department beginning Oct 4 All classes are in the activity room, in the lower level of the administration building. Registration forms are available through the parks and recreation department by calling 397- 1000 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Cost is $8 for the year or $1.75 a month. • CHORUS NEEDS VOICES "The Good Evening Friends,"a repertory chorus, announces it has a limited number of openings for the upcoming season. This group rehearses in Plymouth and performs in the metro area throughout the year. Previous choral experience is required. For further information, call Ed Meade, 455- 0849. • TODDLER STORYTIME Registration for toddler storytime takes place at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Canton Public Library. Registration is in person only and parents can register only their child. Four toddler storytime sessions are slated for 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:31) p.m. starting Monday, Oct. 4. The sessions run through Oct. 25. Each sessibn includes a half-hour program for a 2-year-old child who must be accompanied by an adult. The program will introduce the toddler to the library through stories, songs, fingerplays and a simple craft. PRESCH OOL STORYTIME The Canton Public Library will conduct a preschool storytime for 3-5- year-olds whc can sit attentively for 45 minutes without parental attendance. The program will introduce the children to book* stories, puppets, fingerplays, music and will include a simple craft activity Registration begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 in person only at the library. Five different class t mes are offered. • TODDLER STORY TIME The Dunnipg-Hough Public Library will hold a Toddler Story Time for 2and 3-year-olds and their mothes at 10:15 a.m. evjery Tuesday from Sept. 28 through Nov 2. Registration begins Sept. 21. Story Tirn^ for 5-year-olds will be at the library at 10:15 p.m. also. The story-time sessions are set for Wednesdays beginning Sept. 30 and running through Nov. 4. Registration begins Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. • CANTOry CLASSICS The Canton Classics film series will be shown at 1 p.m. Saturdays in the library meeting room. The series is open to the publi^ free of charge. It is offered by the Adult Series Department of the library. MEA surprised at school strikes By 8uzi« Rollins 8ing«r staff writer Teachers from more than 200 Michigan school districts were without contracts when school starts today. "We're going to start this year with about 250 districts unsettled, and we usually begin school with 200 districts unsettled," said Keith Geiger, Michigan Education Association president. "We were surprised at the number of strikes before Labor Day. I guess we underestimated the school boards' desire to write bad contract language," he said. MICHIGAN HAS 529 Michigan school districts. But by pure coincidence, more contracts expired this year than last year, Geiger said. "There's no excuse for any district not to be settled by Labor Day," Geiger added. "They can have marathon bargaining sessions all weekend to reach agreements," he added. Teachers in Southfield and Troy struck Tuesday. West Bloomfield teachers were out Thursday and Friday but reached agreement over the weekend. Only one class day was lost. It was the first settlement in Oakland County. Geiger said teachers aren't interested in strikes, but in several districts the school boards are forcing them onto picket lines. "If there was ever a time when school employees aren't interested in s strikes —J it's now," he said. "But some boards just don't want to settle. They're lleading poverty or trying to take awiy things that aren't necessary." GEIGER POINTED to school boards' tactics of using the state's poor economic times to "gut non-economic issues." He said that in out-of-formula districts (those which receive no state aid), school boards are asking for what the unioh calls unreasonable conces- sions "One issue is academic freedom. Now the boards have the right to decide which textbooks should be used, but not how to teach, and that's what they're after," he said. Furthermore, Geiger said many school boards are hoping to change the senority-based transfer and layoff system and transfer or layoff people as building principals see fit. NON-ECONOMIC issues appear to be more important this year than economics, Geiger said. For example, the West Bloomfield settlement provides for "job sharing," in which two teachers voluntarily can share a full-time job. 'em — Headlee Pointing out that public employee strikes are illegal, Richard Headlee, Republican candidate for governor, said striking school teacher^ should either return to the classrooms or be replaced. Headlee said, "No contract, no work may be OK in the competitive priVate sector, but in the public sector where civil servants have a fjublic trust, our children must come first." Headlee called the strikes a bad example for teachers to set for young people. "Public employee strikes are illegal and a particularly bad example for teachers to set for young people," Headlee said. "Public service is an honor and a duty. Public employees know the rules when t^ey are hired. Public employees who withhold services should Either return to work or be replaced. Some teachers in in-formula districts are asking for one-year contracts, or for multi-year contracts that can be reopened after one year for salary adjustments, Geiger said. Each districts negotiate separately. A few years ago, there was a movement for regional bargaining, but that's illegal in Michigan, he said. "The only way it's legal is if boards of education agree to bargain at the same table. But I think boards resist that idea because they're afraid of numbers," he said, adding, "we'd be better off bargaining together because we'd see a settlement much quicker."
