BIG SMASH :Someone threw a
brick through the car window of a
Mannington resident, as he drove
with his wife on Joy between Lilley
Road and Main Street Aug. 27.
The incident occurred about 11
p.m. The brick hit the hood and
bounced against the windshield,
shattering the glass, said the resident.
He flagged down a passing Plymouth
police car and reported the property
destruction. There were no injuries,
according to the resident.
WHAT A SHOCK: A
Powderhom Drive woman, sleeping
on her couch, awoke early Aug. 30 to
discover an intruder with a flashlight
in her living room, say police.
The man ran down the basement,
broke out a window and escaped, according
to police reports. The homeowner
later discovered the phone
wires had been cut. Nothing was taken
in the incident, say police.
MESSY RIDE: Two men were
ticketed for knocking down trash cans
and filled garbage bags near Hanford
Aug. 31.
"It looked like a garbage bomb
went off," said a witness, who told po-

Pay raise sparks recall

"TUT is the average taxpayer," Miller
said. Members cut across all age
groups, she added. They include business
people and teachers both within
and outside the Wayne-Westland district.
Miller said a core group of 200 to 300
people have stayed active in TUT
throughout the campaign.
Miller said she's proud that TUT
meetings are open to everyone. She
chides
MILLER TERMED a lawsuit filed
by Arbour, Batterson, Marshall and
Rusnock in an attempt to block the
election "hideous." She suggested the
four would be better served addressing
the issue of the recall.
"I can't understand why one of them
haven't explained why they voted on
the (teachers') contract the way they
did," Miller said.
A successful recall could benefit the
community rather than break it apart,
Miller said. "This can be a cleansing of
the school district," she said.
"We've been accused of Taylorizing
the community," Miller added in reference
to problems in a neighboring district.
"You cannot compare Taylor
(where there have been numerous
school board recalls) to Wayne-Westland.
"They've been through different superintendents.
We've had one in 10
years," she continued. "We're not asking
the superintendent to be removed."

ARBOUR reviewed the controversy
which surfaced earlier this year over a
TUT group's claim about the teachers'
average salaries. A study by the school
board's auditor showed the average to
be well under what the TUT group said
it was.
On the teachers' contract extension,
she commented that a board members
makes "thousands of decisions and we
are being nit-picked on one."

they believe the rally will continue,
although there will be u ps and downs,
i. "We think the rally will continue. It
will have its dips -I the market
breathes in and out," said Vernier.
"Currently, it's beed a blue chip
market. It's like an army — the generals,
like General Motors and IBM,
have been moving forward, and a lot
of the soldiers haven't done anything
yet."
The "soldiers" wouli include such
local interests as Pralb Robots, Patrick
Petroleum and National Bank of
Detroit, said Vernier.
"If the market folbws a normal
pattern, there will be a spillover from
the leaders — from the generals to
the soldiers. It's already happening."
While the rally's outlook is promising,
Tybinka underscores it won't be a
straight uphill situatior

will be corrections. It's the old two
steps forward and one step back idea
There is a digesting of the activity,"
he said.
The trend of the current rally supports
Tybinka's projection. Activities
during the week of Aug. 23 are a
prime example.
On that Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial
Average gained 22 points, but
Tuesday it dropped 16 points. It
gained 17 points on Wednesday and
Thursday, but finished out with a
nine-point drop on Friday. The Dow
average gained 14 points for the
week.
The stock market has experienced
similar sudden movements in the
past.
On Nov. 1, 1978, there was a oneday
gain of 35 points after then President
Carter took measures to stabilize
the value of the U.S. dollar.
A one-week drop in the market occurred
in October 1979 when the Federal
Reserve Board announced a
"tight money" policy. The market
dropped 59 points that week.
