In January, the FEI organised its fi rst Coaches Workshop
in Quito, Ecuador. The design of the FEI Level 3 coaching
- Fundamental Introduction to Coaching
- Learning to Train Level 1 (Coach)
- Training to Train Level 2 (Coach)
- Training to Compete Level 3 (Senior Coach)
- Training to Win Level 4 (Master Coach)
Coaches & Tutors Courses 2009
In total 285 Level 1 and 72 Level 2 coaches from 46 different
1 February 2009, the FEI Development Department and the
The aim of this workshop was to:
- Discuss key coaches skills and how they are implemented
- List ways by which coaches can be effective
- Analyse key roles of a coach
- Share and discuss ideas.
The fi rst day was devoted to coaching theory in a class room.
The participants were divided into four groups, each of
them moderated by four FEI regional Tutors (Jaime Morillo
(ECU), Luis Barreiro (ECU), Carlos Vasconez (ECU) and Jean-
Philippe Camboulives (FRA). The overall moderator was
Liam Moggan from Coaching Ireland.
Each Group worked on a specifi c “Role of the Coach” issues:
- What should coaches plan for and how do they do it ?
- How, what and when should coaches demonstrate?
- What should the coaches see and how do they see it best?
- What and how is the best time/best way to give feedback?
From day 2 throughout the competition, the FEI Experts
worked alternatively each day with the coaches on the
following two classical themes directly linked to the
competitions:
- How to coordinate and plan young athletes’ training –
Long Term Athlete Development, by Jean-Philippe
Camboulives
- Mental Fitness and Methodology – How to manage
mental fi tness in athletes and more specifi cally young
athletes by Liam Moggan.
Every day, competition debriefi ng sessions with coaches and
FEI Experts on the results of the day and preparation of the
action plan for the next day took place at the show ground.
