The outcomes of this fi rst coaches’ workshop were very<br />

positive, with regards to the following aspects:<br />

- Refreshed the knowledge of coaches<br />

- Gave coaches a high quality education based on the<br />

most modern coaching techniques used in all sports<br />

today<br />

- Enabled coaches to practise in competition conditions<br />

with <strong>FEI</strong> experts<br />

- Enabled coaches to work on the technical aspect of<br />

coaching in competition conditions<br />

- Enabled coaches to work on the coaching methodology<br />

in competition conditions<br />

- Enabled coaches from Group IV, V and VI to share<br />

knowledge<br />

- Made coaches help each other<br />

- Reinforced fair play and horsemanship<br />

- Direct feedback with some riders achieving better results<br />

as the event progressed<br />

- Reinforced the links between the three <strong>FEI</strong> Regional Groups<br />

- Reinforced Group IV, V and VI as one region.<br />

Level 3 Pilot Course for Jumping Coaches<br />

The Equestrian Federation of Ecuador in cooperation with<br />

the Ecuadorian National Olympic Committee and the <strong>FEI</strong><br />

organised the 1 st pilot course for level 3 coaches, supported<br />

by PASO.<br />

Thirty-two participants from 19 NFs attended. There were<br />

mainly certifi ed Level 2 coaches plus the six <strong>FEI</strong> Regional<br />

tutors, two observers and seven riders.<br />

The course took place at the excellent facilities of Club<br />

St Francisco in Quito. The coaching method (the role of<br />

the coach, mental fi tness, physical fi tness, lifestyle) were<br />

delivered by Liam Moggan from Coaching Ireland while the<br />

technical part delivered by Gerry Mullins (IRL), <strong>FEI</strong> Senior<br />

Tutor. It covered among others the following topics at<br />

Level 3 (3*** competition level): Gymnastics from Canter,<br />

Shortening and Lengthening; Improving the horse in front<br />

and behind; Developing Accuracy; Straight and Bending;<br />

Going against the Clock, etc.<br />

News from the European Coaching Council<br />

At the biannual meeting of the European Coaching Council,<br />

held in Ragusa, Sicily on 18-19 September the further<br />

development of a European Framework for the Recognition<br />

of Coaching Competence and Qualifi cations was agreed.<br />

This Framework will be aligned with the wider European<br />

Qualifi cations Framework and will act as the reference<br />

point for EU member States and affi liated International<br />

Federations (IFs) in the further development of their coach<br />

education and qualifi cation systems. The current reference<br />

point is documented in the Review of the 5-level structure<br />

of coaching qualifi cations and further work will now be<br />

undertaken to develop a comprehensive framework with a<br />

view to being operational by 2011 (www.enssee.de).<br />

DEVELOPMENT OF NFs SPORTS<br />

STRUCTURES<br />

The following NFs have taken advantage of the competencies<br />

of Experts in the establishment of Jumping and Dressage<br />

competition structures:<br />

Bulgaria Series of Jumping shows – in process Stefan Wirth (GER)<br />

Ukraine Jumping & Dressage Competitions structure<br />

and establishment of new national<br />

rules and education of national offi cials<br />

Egypt Technical visit in view of establishing a<br />

system of judging and dressage competitions<br />

structure<br />

Chile, Costa Rica, and Uruguay have started a review of<br />

their sports structures in the frame work of the Coaching<br />

Programme with the help of an <strong>FEI</strong> Expert.<br />

ADVANCED TRAINING FOR OFFICIALS<br />

The following Judges took advantage of the Advanced<br />

Training programme for Offi cials:<br />

TAILOR-MADE PROGRAMMES<br />

Eventing Development Programme – Eastern Europe<br />

<strong>FEI</strong> Development Officer: Andrew Griffiths/Assistants:<br />

Ronald Alexander (GBR), Peter Wilson (GBR)<br />

A new four-year development plan for Eventing was<br />

submitted to the IOC for funding. The project was approved<br />

and a grant attributed to the Eventing Development<br />

programme in Eastern Europe and to a new four-year project<br />

for Group IX. This programme is coordinated by Andrew<br />

Griffi ths and his team. The same programme continues in<br />

South/Central America under the coordination of José Ortelli<br />

with the fi nancial support of the <strong>FEI</strong> Development Fund.<br />

Russia is developing well with 2* and 3* star competitions<br />

this year and many more 1* and 2* star events. Two individual<br />

riders participated in the Senior European Championship in<br />

Fontainebleau, France and a Junior and Young Rider team<br />

successfully participated in the European Championships in<br />

UK and Germany. Moreover, two new <strong>FEI</strong> Candidate Technical<br />

Delegates were appointed and are now coming to consolidate<br />

the growing panel of <strong>FEI</strong> Offi cials in Eastern Europe.<br />

Ukraine saw two new Candidate Judges appointed at a <strong>FEI</strong><br />

Judges’ Seminar in Slovakia (supported by the Development<br />

Fund).<br />

Bulgaria hosted the Eventing Balkan Championships and for<br />

the fi rst time, a Bulgarian rider competed at the Senior <strong>FEI</strong><br />

European Championships.<br />

Slovakia hosted a CCI*/** in Motesice. The cross country<br />
