Land of fire and ice
Much of Iceland takes shape before your very eyes – raw dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions
and carved out by glaciers. Many parts of Iceland have not changed since the first Viking settlers saw them
over 1100 years ago. You will experience wilderness and wildlife, energy and total calm. Iceland offers you
the mightiest forces that Mother Nature can muster.
DAY 1: Your Door to Door service will transfer you to the airport for your flight to
Iceland. We will be met by a local coach and transferred to our hotel at Reykjavik for
our over night stay & dinner.
DAY 2: Following breakfast we leave Reykjavik and travel south through the
greenhouse town of Hveragerio. Fertile farmland and Glacier Rivers abound as we
continue travelling south towards Skogar and Skogafoss waterfall which at 60m high
is counted among the most beautiful of Iceland’s waterfalls. Next we visit the
farmers of Porvaldseyri, a family run exhibition centre located at the foot of the
world famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano which last erupted in the spring of 2010. A
chance here to view the spectacular natural event in a 20 minute film. Continuing
our journey our next visit is to the Skogar Folk Museum before arriving at our hotel
in Vik. Time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 5: Today we leave the hotel to enjoy an excursion to Geysir & Gullfoss. Though
the old geyser has been in retirement for decades, when it was active its eruptions
reached a height of at least 80m. All around the Old Geysir are more spouting hot
springs such as the lively Stokkur which erupts every 3 – 5 minutes. We continue to
spectacular setting. A tour of a winery is followed by a winemaker’s dinner before
returning to our hotel in Grand Junction.
DAY 6 (B): This morning we head south through Montrose and climb high into the
mountains before descending to the old mining town of Silverton. The place has a
distinctive Wild West atmosphere and we have time to look around and have lunch.
It is also the terminus of the famous Durango and Silverton Railroad which was built
to carry gold and silver away from the San Juan Mountains. It is part of the former
Denver and Rio Grande narrow gauge railway and its trains are still hauled by steam
locomotives. All aboard for wonderful scenery on our 3.5 hour journey through the
mountains and gorges to the town of Durango where our coach will meet us and
transfer to our hotel. Dinner is not included this evening but our hotel is in the town
centre and there are several restaurants and diners close by.
DAY 7 (B, D): Today we visit the Mesa Verde National Park by coach. Mesa Verde is
Spanish for green table and is a plateau at over 8,000 feet. It offers a spectacular
look into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people who made it their home for over
700 years, from A.D. 600 to 1300. Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known
archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. These sites are some of the most
notable and best preserved in the United States. After our visit we return to
Durango. This evening we enjoy a traditional cowboy dinner with local
entertainment.
DAY 8 (B, L, D): Back to the trains! We drive to Chama, just across the border in New
Mexico for a spectacular full day trip on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, another
section of the Denver and Rio Grande. It is ‘America's Highest & Longest Coal-Fired,
Steam-Operated, Narrow-Gauge Railroad’. Enjoy the stunning scenery as we climb
to the top of the Cumbres Pass which, at 10,000 feet, is the highest mountain pass
reached by rail in the United States. We stop at Osier Station for lunch (included)
and then continue along a ledge on the side of the Toltec Gorge. We reach the plains
before the terminus at Antonito where our coach will meet us and continue to our
overnight hotel in Alamosa. Dinner in the hotel.
DAY 9 (B, D): After breakfast we transfer to Alamosa station to join the Rio Grande
Scenic Railroad. Still with steam but this time on standard gauge. We ride for over
three hours, initially across the plain but then up into the mountains to cross the La
Veta Pass. Splendid scenery all the way to the town of La Veta where we leave the
train and have time for lunch. Then we rejoin the coach and drive to Colorado
Springs for our final two nights.
DAY 10 (B, D): Today we visit the historic town of Cripple Creek which sits on the
southwest slopes of the majestic Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rockies. More than 100
years ago, this charming community attracted tens of thousands of gold-seekers to
its hillsides in search of their fortunes. The Gold Rush is part of Cripple Creek’s
colorful history, and today, visitors can choose from a variety of heritage-rich
experiences. We will be descending 1,000 feet underground on a gold mine tour of
Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine! Then it’s onto the Garden of the Gods Park which is a
registered National Natural Landmark. Imagine dramatic views, 300' towering
sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and
brilliant blue skies. This world class Visitor & Nature Centre is the most visited
attraction in the region with a new, exciting, 14 minute, HD show: "How Did Those
Red Rocks Get There?”. Delight in one of Colorado's most photographed views while
eating in the glassed in cafe or from the terrace overlooking Pikes Peak and Garden
of the Gods. A local native guide will come onboard for a 45 minute tour of the
Park. Back to our hotel for a farewell dinner.
DAY 11 (B): Our last day in the US but we have saved one of the highlights until
today. Yesterday we saw Pikes Peak from a distance but now we can go to the
summit on the incredible Pikes Peak Railway. This rack (or cog) railway climbs for 8.9
miles from Manitou Springs to reach the top of the mountain at over 14,000 feet. It
is the highest railway in North America and the highest rack railway in the world.
The Swiss built trains climb through the forest and then above the trees into the
barren alpine landscape. We have a short time at the top before the descent and
then, after a break for lunch, drive back to Denver Airport to check in for our
overnight flight to London.
DAY 12: We are due into Heathrow shortly after 1200 noon and our Door to Door
transport will be waiting for the journey back home.
cruise.
DURING YOUR CRUISE WE WILL VISIT THE FOLLOWING PORTS OF CALL.
CHANNEL ISLANDS – ST PETER’S PORT GUERNSEY: Sleepy lanes, private gardens,
nature reserves and migrating birds are some of the treasures you can expect on
the island which will be awash with colour in July. You will have plenty of time to
explore the island on your own or maybe take one of the optional excursions on
offer from the ship. The town of St Peter’s Port is a delight & the Victorian
Candie Garden looks out over St Peter’s Port.
DUBLIN – IRELAND: Famously friendly Dublin has traditional pubs and modern
bars, thriving markets and elegant shops, superb open spaces and some of the
finest public buildings in Europe. The oldest university in Ireland is Trinity College
founded in 1592. It spreads out over the centre of the city with gardens, a
picturesque quadrangle & cobbled squares. The vast open spaces of Phoenix Park
are crossed by tree lined avenues with livestock grazing the meadows and deer
roaming the wooded areas.
ISLE OF MULL – TOBERMORY: A pretty little village with brightly coloured houses
fronting the main street that runs down to the pier. The name Tobermory comes
from the Gaelic Tobar Mhoire – Mary’s Well, the water which was said to have
medicinal properties, although sadly the well has disappeared. Tobermory
Distillery, the only one on the Isle of Mull, was founded in 1798 but has opened
and closed and reopened several times. The buildings date back to when the
distillery first opened.
SCOTLAND – ULLAPOOL: Founded by the British Fisheries Society in 1788.
Ullapool sits on the edge of Loch Broom and has become an important holiday
centre in recent years, with fishing in the sea and loch, as well as deer stalking,
golf and boat trips. The award winning Ullapool Museum is in a former church, a
Grade A listed building designed by Thomas Telford. It was built in 1829
following a parliamentary initiative to provide places of worship throughout the
Highlands.
11th Century Church of St Olaf of Norway. St
Magnus Cathedral in the town is well worth a
visit as are the ruins of the former Bishop’s
Palace dating back to the 12th century and
Earl’s Palace, said to have been the finest
Renaissance building in Scotland. For
something different, learn about the history of
radio at the Orkney Radio Museum.
ISLE OF LEWIS: Located off the western coast of Scotland, Stornaway merges the
beautiful landscape scenery and the ruggedness of the island with historical
relics. Stornaway is also famous for its mysterious stone structure based at
Callanish, believed to date back over 4000 years; this has many folk tales
attached to its name.
Baltic Capitals & Culture
visiting Copenhagen, Stockholm & St Petersburg
SWEDEN: Stockholm – Much of the capital’s unique appeal is its setting on 14
islands at the beginning of an archipelago stretching out into the Baltic. Many
bridges criss-cross the water, while parks, gardens and wide boulevards make the
city a pleasure to explore. Founded over 700 years ago, it retains buildings
throughout its history. The Old Town is a delight with narrow streets, cobbled
squares and medieval houses which provides an intriguing contrast with the
cutting-edge modern architecture in the city
ESTONIA: Tallinn has one of the best preserved old towns of Europe. The ancient
Hanseatic city is justifiably proud of its beautiful churches, solid limestone
houses and well preserved cobbled streets. The Toopea Hill with medieval houses
and alleyways is the oldest part of the town; at the foot of the hill substantial
remains of the city walls can still be seen. The medieval town hall and square are
a must to see and the weathercock, Gamle Toomas, on top of the town hall
symbolises Tallinn.
RUSSIA: St Petersburg – Often rated as one of the best destinations on all
cruises, the city is captivating, with baroque palaces, wide elegant streets, ornate
bridges and broad curving canals. The main street Nevsky Prospekt is 5km and
lined with cafes, bars, shops and restaurants. The Winter Palace with over a
thousand rooms is merely the most magnificent of six buildings that make up
the Hermitage Museum.
POLAND: Gdynia an important seaport with an intriguing history. The oldest
building in Gdynia is St Michael the Archangel’s church, built in the 13th century.
The port houses two museum ships, the ORP Blykawica destroyer and the Dar
Pomorza a Tall ship-frigate. Located 30 minutes away is the city of Gdansk a
pearl of bougeios architecture, boasting beautiful houses and a unique market.
The city is a world of cobbled winding streets and historical churches. The pretty
main street, Ulica Mariaka is home to the world’s largest brick built clock.
have plenty of time to settle in before dinner.
DURING YOUR CRUISE WE WILL BE VISITING THE FOLLOWING PORTS.
BERGEN: The carefully restored Bryggen Wharf is a delight. Its narrow streets
climb away from the waterfront, lined by interesting shops, colourful timbered
houses and cobbled streets with alleyways and tiny open spaces that beg to be
explored. Bergen is framed by seven magnificent hills, the highest of which can
be reached by a funicular railway. From the top there are spectacular views
down to the harbour side where cafes, bars and restaurants welcome visitors.
SONGEFJORD: Beautiful Skjolden sits at the end of the world’s longest fjord,
overlooked by the Jutunheimen, northern Europe’s highest mountains and by
Jostealsbreen, the largest glacier on mainland Europe. Close to Skjolden is
Urnes Stave Church, the world’s oldest of its type, built some time around
AD1130. The Feigum Waterfalls are the most spectacular waterfalls in Norway..
SOGNEFJORD: Flam a tiny village on the banks of Aurlandsfjord. This setting is
utterly spectacular. A stroll along the waterside, past orchards and hamlets,
cottages and farmland explains why this area of Norway is so popular. In
recent years the Flam Railway has become a major attraction. Finished in 1944,
it climbs up over 20km and almost a thousand metres through magnificent
scenery, in and out of mountains, past waterfalls and ravines. We will pause at
the beautiful Kjosfossen Waterfall for a photo opportunity.
EIDFJORD, HARDANGERFJORD: The approach to Flam, nestled at the innermost
reaches of the majestic Sognefjord is truly memorable. Enjoy some of
Norway’s wildest and magnificent landscapes. Time here to take the Flam
railway which twists and turns its way from the fjord to the mountaintop.
STAVANGER: A vibrant and exciting city that wore its title of ‘European Capital
of Culture for 2008’ with ease. Stavanger is a charming town, the Old Town
Canary & Cape Verde
Islands
DAY 1: Your Door to Door Service will collect you and take you to
Southampton to board the Balmoral where the crew will welcome you on
board. There will be plenty of time to settle into your cabin before dinner.
DURING YOUR CRUISE WE WILL VISIT THE FOLLOWING PORTS OF CALL.
MADEIRA: Funchal, the island’s capital, enjoys an all year temperate climate
which results in the most beautifully stunning gardens. Madeira is often
referred to as the floating garden of the Atlantic. Funchal boasts many
treasures including museums. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden has exotic
plants from all over the world, while equally impressive is the Jardin Botanico
high in the hills, reached by the magnificent Botanical Garden’s cable car.
LAS PALMAS: Santa Cruz was conquered by the King of Castille in the 15th
century when Santa Cruz de la Palma became an important trading post
between Spain and the Americas. The wealthy past has left a legacy in palaces,
colonial buildings and sumptuous merchants’ houses in the Old Quarter,
including the town hall which was built in the reign of Phillip II. Around the
town are many cafes, bars and restaurants serving local dishes. The Cape Verdes
were a Portuguese colony and there are many traces of the colonial heritage in
their towns and villages
CAPE VERDE: Praia de Santa Maria is the capital and main port on the island of
Santiago, the largest of the Cape Verde islands. The main part of the town sits
on a small plateau above the natural harbour and the sandy beach which
makes the town very pleasant to explore. The 19th Century Presidential Palace
is an elegant building, while the Ethnographic Museum tells the story of the
islands’ colonial history. Albuquerque Square sits in the centre with open air
cafes and bars where you can relax and enjoy the warm climate.
CAPE VERDE: Mindelo on Sao Vicente island is fringed by arid mountains and a
deep water port that has long been a stopping off point for transatlantic ships.
The municipal market is interesting and there are some fine wide esplanades
around the harbour. A stroll through the town is a great way to find interesting
little cafes and tiny shops.
TENERIFE: Santa Cruz is built around boulevards and wide avenues that link
elegant squares and parks. San Juan, the best preserved castle in the islands, is
also known as the Black Castle after the volcanic blocks used in its
construction. Nearby the Maritime Park is a great place for a stroll.
PORTUGAL: Lisbon is a delightful mixture of palaces, churches, art nouveau
This Fair Trading Agreement sets out clearly and simply
the responsibilities which we have to you and in turn
you have to us when a contract is made between us.
The contract is made when you make a booking and we
accept it by written confirmation on the terms set out in
Your contract is with CITO Limited ‘the Company’ which is licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) under Air Transport Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) 6218.
The Company offices are at 10 Town Gate, Guiseley, LS20 9JA. The Registered Number is 03859958.
1. BOOKING AND PAYMENT
When you make your booking you must complete a booking
form, accepting on behalf of all your party the terms of these
booking conditions and pay a deposit indicated in the brochure.
All monies paid to your travel agent are held by him on your
behalf until we issue our confirmation invoice. There after your
travel agent holds the monies on our behalf. A contract will exist
when we issue our confirmation invoice. The balance of the price
of your holiday must be paid at least 8 weeks (for River Cruise
holidays 10 weeks, for Sea Cruises 16 weeks) before your
departure date. If the balance is not paid in time we reserve the
right to cancel your holiday, retain your deposit, and apply the
cancellation charges set out in paragraph 3 below.
2. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR BOOKING
If, after our confirmation has been issued, you wish to change to
another of our holidays or change departure date, we will do our
utmost to make the changes, provided that notification is
received in writing at our offices from the person who signed
the booking form, or from their travel agent, at least
4 weeks before departure. This must be accompanied by
a payment of £25 to cover our administration costs.
Alterations cannot be made within 4 weeks of departure
and any such request for an alteration will be treated as a
cancellation of the original booking and will be subject to
the cancellation charges set out in paragraph 3 below.
3. IF YOU CANCEL YOUR HOLIDAY
You, or any member of your party, may cancel your holiday at
any time provided that the cancellation is made by the person
signing the booking form and is communicated to us in writing
via the office at which you made your original booking. You
will have to pay cancellation charges to cover our
administration costs and to compensate for the risk of us not
being able to resell the holiday. Your cancellation will take
effect from the date on which either our agent or we receive
your written confirmation of your cancellation. You must also
return any tickets or vouchers that you have received. A
reduction in room occupancy may increase the charges for the
remaining passengers by the application of supplements for
low occupancy of rooms. Cancellation charges will be applied
as per the scale shown.
Where bought in supplies, such as flights, cruise, ferries, hotel
accommodation etc, have been bought in on your behalf, and
under the terms and conditions of the supplier are nonrefundable,
these products will be charged out at the full retail
rate. If this applied the non-refundable items will be deducted
from you holiday costs and the following scale of charges will
be applied to the remainder:
Period before departure Amount of cancellation
date within which charge (expressed as a % of
notification is total booking price, excluding
received by us insurance premium)
of an insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these
our publicity material. When signing the Booking Form
for your holiday you will sign on behalf of yourself and
the others named in your party that you have read,
understood and have accepted this Trading Charter,
holiday information provided in the brochure and
Contract. Your obligation is to pay the price of the
BOOKING CONDITIONS
charges.
You can transfer your booking to someone else provided you
give us reasonable notice. This person must be able to satisfy
all the conditions for the holiday and a change cannot normally
be made later than 14 days prior to departure. We will make an
administration charge of £25 per booking per person for every
transfer we make plus any additional costs caused by the
transfer. You will remain responsible for ensuring that the
holiday is paid for by the balance due date. However if the
booking contains elements that are not transferable e.g. Airline
tickets it will not be possible.
4. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT
If you have a problem during your holiday, please inform the
relevant supplier (e.g hotel) and resort representative
immediately who will endeavour to put things right. If your
complaint cannot be completely resolved locally, you must
complete a report form which can be obtained from our local
representative. Please follow this up within 14 days of your
return home by writing to our Customer Services
Department, 10, Town Gate, Guiseley, LS20 9JA giving your
original booking reference number and all other relevant
information. It is therefore a condition of this contract that
you communicate any problem to the supplier of the services
in question AND to our representative whilst in resort and
obtain a written report form. If you fail to follow this simple
procedure we cannot accept responsibility as we have been
deprived of the opportunity to investigate and rectify the
problem.
5. SURCHARGE POLICY
Holiday prices include all travel, hotel accommodation and
meals as specified in the holiday description and
VAT payable in the UK where applicable. The price of the
holiday will not be subjected to any surcharges except those
arising from currency surcharges, transportation including
fuel (including fuel tax), air & ferry operator fares and tolls,
embarkation or disembarkation fees at terminals, duties and
taxes (including the rate of VAT). Even in these cases we will
absorb the cost equivalent to the cost of first 2% of the
holiday price. Amounts in excess of this plus £5
administration fee and Travel Agents commission will be
surcharged to you. If this means the total cost of the
holiday increases by more than 10% then you are entitled
to cancel your holiday and receive a full refund of all monies
paid except any insurance premium and amendment
charges.
If you exercise the right to cancel we must receive written
notice within 14 days of the date of the surcharge invoice.
The currency exchange rate used in the holiday costings are
based on rates as at 12th September 2012. In addition to
sterling we use the following currencies in calculating our
holiday prices. Rates below are the equivalent exchange rates
to £1 sterling from the Financial Times Exchange Rates dated
Thursday 11th September 2012. 1.248 Euro, 14.488 ZAR, 1.61
USD and 1.513 CHF.
6. ALTERATION OR CANCELLATION
BY THE COMPANY
It is unlikely that we will have to make any changes to your
holiday, but we do plan the arrangements many months
in advance. Occasionally changes may be made, which
we reserve the right to do so at any time. Most of these
changes are minor, and we will advise you or your travel agent
at the earliest possible date. Flight timings and carriers in the
publicity material are subject to change as
a result of airline procedures and these details are given
for guidance only. Sometimes departure airports are also
changed and where we are providing door to door service or the
changes are between the London airports of Heathrow,
holiday and recognise your liabilities if you wish to alter
the holiday or have to make a cancellation. On our part
we have obligations to provide you with the holiday that
you have booked. Our specification of that holiday and
our terms are clearly stated in our publicity material.
All bookings are accepted on these conditions.
Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, this does not constitute a major
change. Final details will be shown on your tickets. If a major
change becomes necessary, we will inform you or your travel
agent as soon as reasonably possible if there is time before
departure. When a major change occurs (such as the alteration
of your outward/return flights by more than 12 hours, changes
of resort or reduction in the standard of accommodation)
provided it does not arise from circumstances amounting to
force majeure, you will have the choice of either accepting the
change of arrangements, taking another holiday from us, or
cancelling your holiday and receiving a full refund. In all such
cases we will pay compensation as detailed:
therein or any airline whose services are used in the course of
the tour.
third party. If you are prevented from travelling or continuing
your holiday by such a termination our responsibility for your
and hygiene may be lower than those to which we are
accustomed in the UK. You should therefore exercise greater
care for your own protection. There may be countries that
we visit that have special medical requirements for tourists.
These regulations are subject to change and our clients are
Travellers” (T7.1)
Some people may be at risk from discomfort or deep vein
thrombosis (DVT) if they remain immobile on a journey for a
long period of time. If you are planning to undertake a
journey of more than three hours, you should consult your
doctor if you have ever had DVT, pulmonary embolism, a
family history of clotting conditions, cancer or treatment for
cancer, stroke, and heart or lung disease or if you have had
major surgery in the past three months.
We reserve the right to refuse any booking in the absence of a
doctor’s certificate confirming that you are fit to travel.
Where we provide comfort stops you are encouraged to
walk around. Exercise reduces any discomfort, which may be
caused by periods of immobility. During any long journey
you should drink alcohol only in moderation as it leads to
dehydration.
in secure files and electronic storage facilities. We may use this
information to contact you by mail, telephone or electronic
means. We will provide you with details of other goods and
services including those of selected third parties. We may share
your information with other carefully selected third parties who
may contact you direct by mail, telephone or electronic means. If
you do not wish to receive further information about products
issued subject to all applicable Acts of Parliament and
18. CONSUMER PROTECTION
When you buy an ATOL protected holiday package with flights
from us, you will receive a Confirmation Invoice and an ATOL
Certificate either direct from us or via our authorised agent
through which you booked your holiday. This lists the details
of the services that are financially protected under our ATOL
Licence number 6218. You must take this Certificate with
you when you travel.
In the unlikely event of our insolvency, the CAA will ensure
that you are not stranded abroad and will arrange
to refund any money you have paid to us for an advance
booking. For further information visit the ATOL website at
www.atol.org.uk
Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by
us will be protected by the ATOL Scheme. Please ask us to
confirm what protection may apply to your booking.
19. ENGLISH LAW
If any term or provision in this contract shall in whole or
in part be held to be illegal or unenforceable under any
enactment or rule of law, that term or provision or part shall
to that extent be deemed not to form part of this contract
and the enforceability of the remainder of this contract shall
not be affected. This contract is made on the terms of these
booking conditions which are governed by English Law and
both parties shall submit to the jurisdiction of English Courts
at all times.
20. CRUISES
Please note: on the river cruises, because of the limited storage
space onboard, the menus are set. They are displayed on the
reception deck each day. If you require an alternative to the
menu offered, please advise a member of the crew who will do
all they can to ensure your requests are met.
Please also note: all of our Cruise Itineraries are correct at time of
going to press but are subject to change due to docking or
weather conditions. Your Tour Manager will inform you of any
changes.
