Sea Cruise
NEW FOR
2013
Full
Board
Scottish Highlands & Islands with Ireland
DAY 1: Your Door to Door
Service will collect you
from home and transfer
you to Southampton to
board The Balmoral. You
will be welcomed aboard
by the crew with plenty of
time to settle into your
cabin before dinner. Tonight
we set sail to begin our
cruise.
DURING YOUR CRUISE WE WILL VISIT THE FOLLOWING PORTS OF CALL.
CHANNEL ISLANDS – ST PETER’S PORT GUERNSEY: Sleepy lanes, private gardens,
nature reserves and migrating birds are some of the treasures you can expect on
the island which will be awash with colour in July. You will have plenty of time to
explore the island on your own or maybe take one of the optional excursions on
offer from the ship. The town of St Peter’s Port is a delight & the Victorian
Candie Garden looks out over St Peter’s Port.
DUBLIN – IRELAND: Famously friendly Dublin has traditional pubs and modern
bars, thriving markets and elegant shops, superb open spaces and some of the
finest public buildings in Europe. The oldest university in Ireland is Trinity College
founded in 1592. It spreads out over the centre of the city with gardens, a
picturesque quadrangle & cobbled squares. The vast open spaces of Phoenix Park
are crossed by tree lined avenues with livestock grazing the meadows and deer
roaming the wooded areas.
ISLE OF MULL – TOBERMORY: A pretty little village with brightly coloured houses
fronting the main street that runs down to the pier. The name Tobermory comes
from the Gaelic Tobar Mhoire – Mary’s Well, the water which was said to have
medicinal properties, although sadly the well has disappeared. Tobermory
Distillery, the only one on the Isle of Mull, was founded in 1798 but has opened
and closed and reopened several times. The buildings date back to when the
distillery first opened.
SCOTLAND – ULLAPOOL: Founded by the British Fisheries Society in 1788.
Ullapool sits on the edge of Loch Broom and has become an important holiday
centre in recent years, with fishing in the sea and loch, as well as deer stalking,
golf and boat trips. The award winning Ullapool Museum is in a former church, a
Grade A listed building designed by Thomas Telford. It was built in 1829
following a parliamentary initiative to provide places of worship throughout the
Highlands.
ORKNEY ISLANDS: Kirkwall feels Scandinavian;
in fact the name comes from the Norse for
Church Bay, the church in question beimg the
11th Century Church of St Olaf of Norway. St
Magnus Cathedral in the town is well worth a
visit as are the ruins of the former Bishop’s
Palace dating back to the 12th century and
Earl’s Palace, said to have been the finest
Renaissance building in Scotland. For
something different, learn about the history of
radio at the Orkney Radio Museum.
ISLE OF LEWIS: Located off the western coast of Scotland, Stornaway merges the
beautiful landscape scenery and the ruggedness of the island with historical
relics. Stornaway is also famous for its mysterious stone structure based at
Callanish, believed to date back over 4000 years; this has many folk tales
attached to its name.
NORTHERN IRELAND: Belfast a modern, vibrant & stylish city. On and around
Great Victoria Street there are some excellent restaurants and a wide choice of
pubs, whilst the fascinating Botanical Gardens are close to the Queen’s University.
Alongside the Gardens is the Ulster Museum housed in a beautiful Renaissance
style building, which tells Ireland’s 9000 year history. On the northern edge of the
city is Belfast Castle which stands 120m above the sea.
We leave Belfast and cruise back to Southampton where your Door to Door Service
will be waiting to take you home.
