Iceland
Land of fire and ice
Much of Iceland takes shape before your very eyes – raw dramatic landscapes born from volcanic eruptions
and carved out by glaciers. Many parts of Iceland have not changed since the first Viking settlers saw them
over 1100 years ago. You will experience wilderness and wildlife, energy and total calm. Iceland offers you
the mightiest forces that Mother Nature can muster.
DAY 1: Your Door to Door service will transfer you to the airport for your flight to
Iceland. We will be met by a local coach and transferred to our hotel at Reykjavik for
our over night stay & dinner.
DAY 2: Following breakfast we leave Reykjavik and travel south through the
greenhouse town of Hveragerio. Fertile farmland and Glacier Rivers abound as we
continue travelling south towards Skogar and Skogafoss waterfall which at 60m high
is counted among the most beautiful of Iceland’s waterfalls. Next we visit the
farmers of Porvaldseyri, a family run exhibition centre located at the foot of the
world famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano which last erupted in the spring of 2010. A
chance here to view the spectacular natural event in a 20 minute film. Continuing
our journey our next visit is to the Skogar Folk Museum before arriving at our hotel
in Vik. Time to settle in before dinner.
DAY 3: Today our excursion takes us to Europe’s largest National Park, Skaftafell,
travelling through the Catholic convent at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. The park is one of
Iceland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty. The area is dominated by
magnificent views of the mighty Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier. We continue to
Half
Board
Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon where huge
icebergs float and grind together in the
still deep waters of the lagoon. We return
to Vik and our hotel for dinner.
DAY 4: After breakfast we take the short
transfer to the harbour where we will
board our 30 minute ferry over to the
Westman Islands (weather permitting).
The Westman Islands are one of Iceland’s
best kept secrets. Described as one of the
wonders of nature, you will be surrounded
by mountains, islands, volcanoes and sea
birds. Your adventures today include a visit
to the puffins at Storhofdi, a walk up to the crater of a volcano that erupted a few
years ago and exploring flora of the new lava fields. After lunch you will have free
time to explore the islands further. We continue to our hotel in Laugarvatn.
DAY 5: Today we leave the hotel to enjoy an excursion to Geysir & Gullfoss. Though
the old geyser has been in retirement for decades, when it was active its eruptions
reached a height of at least 80m. All around the Old Geysir are more spouting hot
springs such as the lively Stokkur which erupts every 3 – 5 minutes. We continue to
travel onwards to Gullfoss one of Iceland’s most impressive waterfalls. Our next stop
is Pingvellir National Park where the ancient parliament met for centuries on the
shores of Iceland’s largest lake, before heading back to Reykjavik for an overnight
stay and dinner.
DAY 6: Day at leisure to relax or alternatively you could explore Reykjavik. There will
be plenty of optional tours (including whale watching) available to purchase at the
hotel reception if you wish to explore further.
DAY 7: Our full day included excursion today is “The Icelandic Sagas” renowned
throughout the world. The tour takes you to the settings of the most famous events
in Icelandic history. We will follow the footsteps of the Viking Warrior and poet Egill
Skallagrimsson. We will visit the Icelandic settlement centre exhibition in Borgarnes.
We continue our tour to Reykholt the home of Snorri Sturluson the most significant
Nordic poet and historian of the Middle Ages. We travel further inland to
Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls before visiting Deildartinguhver, Europe’s
most powerful hot spring, returning to our hotel at Reykjavik in time for dinner.
DAY 8: After breakfast our local coach will transfer us to the airport for our return
flight to the UK and your Door to Door service home.
