Long Haul Highlights of South Africa (with optional extension to Victoria Falls) An outstanding tour to experience some of the best sights, mountains, wildlife and heritage of South Africa. We start our tour in Pretoria in the north and then tour right down to the Cape of Good Hope in the south, On the way we visit the Kruger National Park, Swaziland, the Battlefields, the Garden Route, the Winelands and Cape Town. Good quality hotels throughout with breakfast every morning and dinner on all but one night. There is an optional extension at the beginning of the holiday to the mighty Victoria Falls, staying at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel. This tour has more meals and attractions included than offered by many other tour operators. So, a higher price than some but good value. DAY 1: Door to Door service from your home and then transfer to Heathrow Airport for an overnight flight by South African Airways to Johannesburg. DAY 2 (D): We shall be met on arrival at Johannesburg and taken to Pretoria for an orientation tour before checking into our hotel. Those who have been on the Victoria Falls extension will join the others before dinner. DAY 3 (B, D): Travel from Pretoria dropping several hundred feet into the lush subtropical region of the Lowveld. Travel via the historic towns of Witbank, Dullstroom and Lydenberg, passing over Robbers Pass to the town of Pilgrim’s Rest, the old mining village where gold was first discovered. Check in to our Victorian style hotel which has shunned modern facilities for authenticity. Then time to explore the village with its interesting museums and shops. DAY 4 (B, D): This morning head north to the Blyde River Canyon, an amazing 20mile long 2,300-foot deep gorge cutting through the Great Escarpment. Visit the Three Rondavels, God’s Window and the Bourke’s Luck Potholes before arriving at Graskop for a late lunch stop. We then proceed to Hazyview, where the rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner this evening is at Shangaan River Club (adjacent to our hotel) for an evening of Shangaan song and dance and an unforgettable African banquet. DAY 5 (B, D): At dawn, we depart for a day of game viewing in the Kruger National Park in specially modified 4x4 open safari vehicles, with specialised game rangers. We should at least see lions, baboons, giraffe, hippos, rhinos, elephants, crocodiles and hopefully more besides. There will be regular stops at rest camps with full facilities. We return to our hotel at Hazyview mid afternoon. DAY 6 (B, D): Today, we travel south into the tiny kingdom of Swaziland. We shall enter through the Matsamo border crossing and drive through the beautiful Highveld to Piggs Peak. After a stop at the Ngwenga Glass Village and the Royal Swazi Candle Factory we shall arrive at our hotel which is on a private estate in the mountains. DAY 7 (B, D): This morning we continue our scenic journey through Swaziland via the vast Usutu Forest to reach the Sandlane border to cross back into South Africa. Then south through the town of Piet Retief and into the province of Kwazulu-Natal. Our overnight hotel is in the town of Dundee, on the edge of the Battlefields. DAY 8 (B, L, D): We start our day with a visit to the Talana Museum which is dedicated to subjects as diverse as domestic life, agriculture, mining, industry and the local battles. We then drive to the Battlefields and spend the morning on a guided tour of 20 the Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana battle grounds. Enjoy lunch at Isandlwana Lodge before departing for Protea Shakaland. Shakaland is an unique resort which was purpose built for the set of the films Shaka Zulu and John Ross. This evening we relive the excitement and romance of the days of Shaka, the King of the Zulus in an authentic recreation of the Great Kraal overlooking the Phobane Lake. DAY 9 (B, D): We travel to Durban Airport for a lunchtime flight to Port Elizabeth On our arrival we transfer the short distance to our hotel on the seafront overlooking the Indian Ocean. (Please note that day 9 could be amended to take account of flight times) DAY 10 (B, D): Today we drive through increasingly beautiful scenery to reach the Garden Route. We travel through the Tsitsikamma Forest and past the resort of Plettenburg Bay, stopping for lunch on the way. In the afternoon we visit the Knysna Elephant Park, a home for abandoned and orphaned elephants before heading to Knysna at the centre of the Garden Route. We stay for two nights at a modern hotel on the quayside overlooking the lagoon. DAY 11 (B, L): Today we take a boat across the Knysna Lagoon to visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve. The tour includes lunch and an optional walk through the reserve. Then back by boat to Knysna for a free afternoon to wander along the quay with its modern shops or explore the more traditional town centre. DAY 12 (B, L, D): We leave Knysna after breakfast and drive along the Garden Route through Sedgefield and Wilderness before turning inland to climb over the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to enter the semi arid Little Karoo area and its principal town – Oudtshoorn which is known as the ‘feather capital of the world’. We visit the Safari Ostrich Farm for a guided tour and lunch. Then we head underground for a fascinating tour of the Cango Caves, one of South Africa’s incredible natural wonders. Our hotel tonight is a country lodge which was formerly a 19th century farm. DAY 13 (B, D): We travel today towards the Winelands following scenic Route 62 through the Little Karoo into the mountains beyond. After Montagu we pass through Cogman’s Kloof Gorge and enter the Breede River Valley winegrowing area. We continue up the valley to Worcester and then travel through the Huguenot Tunnel to reach the Cape Winelands. We shall spend the night on the famous wine estate at Spier near Stellenbosch. Dinner will be in the Moyo Rerstaurant in the estate grounds. A huge buffet with dishes from across Africa is accompanied by live entertainment.
DAY 14 (B, L, D): After breakfast, we shall tour the renowned Cape Winelands. Our day will include a stroll through the historic town of Stellenbosch, a drive across the scenic Helshoogte Pass, two wine tastings and a cellar tour. We include lunch at the renowned Boschendal Estate. Later we drive into Cape Town for a three night stay at our hotel close to the sea in the suburb of Bantry Bay. (note – if the weather is good we may take the cable car up Table Mountain this afternoon instead of tomorrow morning). DAY 15 (B, D): This morning we have a Cape Town city sightseeing tour which will include an ascent of Table Mountain by cable car. The view of the city below, the sea beyond and the coastline heading south to Cape Point is stunning. Our tour will also include the city centre, District Six and Camps Bay. The tour will end at the Victoria and Albert Waterfront – a modern shopping complex built around the city’s historic docks. We have time for lunch here followed by free time before the coach takes us back to our hotel. This evening we go out to dinner at the Five Flies Restaurant in the city centre. DAY 16 (B, L, D): Today, see the spectacular southern peninsula, known as the ‘Fairest Cape’. Drive through Camps Bay and Llandudno – millionaire’s paradise, enjoy a Seal Island Cruise from Hout Bay, drive over Chapman’s Peak, visit the resident Penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach, visit the naval town of Simonstown and enjoy lunch at Bertha’s Restaurant. After lunch we continue into Table Mountain National Park to visit the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point where a short funicular ride will take us to the famous view point. Our final dinner in South Africa will be at the Gold Restaurant in the city centre where a special selection of African and Cape Malay dishes will be served accompanied by African entertainment. DAY 17 (B): Our last day in South Africa! DAY 18: We arrive at Heathrow early in the morning and our transport will be waiting for the return journey back home. Optional Extension to Victoria Falls – From 6th November DAY A: Door to Door service from your home and then transfer to Heathrow Airport for an overnight flight by South African Airways to Johannesburg. DAY B (B, D): On arrival at Johannesburg Airport we transfer to a connecting South African Airways flight to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe where we shall be taken to the Victoria Falls Hotel for our two night stay. This five star hotel is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World and is one of the most famous hotels in Africa. It combines Edwardian colonial charm with modern facilities. We shall be staying in deluxe rooms. The rest of the day will be at leisure to take advantage of the close proximity of the Victoria Falls which can be accessed by a private path from our hotel. DAY C (B, D): This morning, after a leisurely breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of the Victoria Falls known locally as the ‘Smoke that Thunders’. Here the Zambezi River plummets 360ft into a chasm almost a mile wide. In the late afternoon, we board the African Queen for an amazing sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. DAY D (B, D): Morning at leisure before transferring to Victoria Falls Airport for a lunchtime flight to Johannesburg. On arrival we join our coach for the short journey to Pretoria where we shall have an orientation tour before arriving at our hotel where we join those who have not opted for the Victoria Falls extension. DAY E: We join the main itinerary as shown from day 3. PLEASE NOTE: PASSPORTS AND VISAS: UK nationals do not require a visa to enter South Africa. However, one is required for Zimbabwe. This can be obtained on arrival in Victoria Falls for a fee of 55 US Dollars (or the equivalent in sterling) cash. All passports should have at least six months validity on arrival in South Africa or Zimbabwe. MALARIA: Some areas on this tour (particularly Victoria Falls and Kruger National Park) are malarial and so it is essential to take appropriate precautions as advised by your GP. Long Haul 21
