Celebrating 40 years!
FALL 2008 - SPRING 2009
INTRODUCTION
It’s time again, for the annual state of the nursery address. For those of you new to our
operation, we start the catalog each season with an update on our family’s activities along
with any new business news pertaining to the nursery. Just to let you all know this is our
40 th anniversary catalog. It hardly seems possible for so many seasons to have passed by;
recently Roger was talking about what we should do on our 0 th 5
catalog! We told him
lets just handle them one at a time. This year has flown by and it seems too soon for the
weather and seasons to be changing. We have experienced an unusually cool and short
summer even by our standards. However, this cooler weather has been bringing people
out to the nursery recently. This is always the one good part about the end of the long hot
summer; it is always fun see people start thinking about planting and gardening again.
This past season has been busy, we were especially excited to help host the Willamette
Valley Hardy Plant Study Weekend this past June. The study weekend seemed genuinely
well received by all those in attendance and it was wonderful to be able to catch up with
old friends and share the garden with many new ones as well. We attended more plant
sales this spring than ever before. It is always enjoyable to meet new people from around
the region and introduce them to the plants we offer. We are constantly surprised that
after 40 years in business many people here in the northwest still don’t know we exist. So
consider it a personal favor to us, if you like what we do, please share us with your
friends. We have always relied heavily on word of mouth for the bulk of our advertising.
We are always more than happy to send catalogs to anyone who requests them and you
can always refer them to www.gosslerfarms.com. Sorry for the shameless plug!
One of the projects we have been working on this past year with Timber Press in Portland
Oregon, who approached us about writing a book on shrubs. We have been working hard
on completing the manuscript and we recently turned it over to the publisher. They are
anticipating a release date for the book of sometime in the fall of 2009. We are both
excited and anxious to see the finished product. We will keep you informed on its status
leading up to the release. We are hoping to highlight the use of shrubs in the landscape
and will discuss in detail some 200 different plants.
Another exciting event for us this year is Dawn moving to Thurston Elementary School.
This will make her commute about a half of a mile to and from work each day. This is
quite a change from 5 years ago when she was commuting 28 miles one way. The other
exciting part of the move is it will put Dawn and Pierce in the same school for one year.
This will be Pierce’s last year in elementary school before he is off to middle school.
Roger has some lectures scheduled for the fall and spring and is looking forward to
meeting some new plant groups along the way. Marj has been doing her normal summer
golf odyssey this year. She will hate us for mentioning it here, but we want to wish her a
great year. On September 14, 2008 she turns 80! She is an important part of our business

and for many of you who call us, Marj is the one you usually will reach first. People keep
asking her when she will retire and she usually responds with “what would I do any
differently.” Eric and Pierce went on a four-day float trip this June with a friend on the
John Day River in central Oregon. This was a great trip, the weather was perfect and the
company was even better. It was sleeping on the riverbank and fishing all day as you
moved down river to the next campsite. We covered a little over 50 miles during the trip.
We are especially excited about this year’s new plants; as usual we have added over 120
new items to this year’s catalog. There are too many for us to discuss here individually
however we are sure you will find many new treasures. We are offering a selection of
blueberries this year for the first time. You can purchase them individually or you can get
a package of any five for a special price. We are obtaining these from a local operation
known for supplying blueberries to countries all around the globe. They have become the
largest supplier of commercial blueberries in the United States over the last few years.
These vacciniums can be a great crossover for any garden, we use then in the landscape
as ornamentals and the fruit during the summer can be a wonderful bonus.
Every year we thank our current employees who we consider to be our friends as well as
staff. We have college kids who have worked for us come back and visit years later just
to say hi and catch up. We love to see how they are doing and are proud to have helped
them a little along the way. This year we have only two employees to thank. The first is
Lisa Sebright who helps in the office and the second is Meredith Conley who recently
graduated from the University of Oregon. Both are a joy to work with and they help the
work days go by little faster.
As always, if you are ever in our area please come visit us. We always love to share the
garden and nursery with others. If you have a group wanting to tour the garden and
nursery we can help arrange lunches and assist you in any way possible with your trip.
We hope you all have a great year and look forward to supplying your plant addictions.

FALL 2008
SPRING 2009
Indicates new plants added this year.
ABELIA FLORABUNDA - is a Mexican Abelia with
amazing vibrant pink flowers. The flowers appear in June and
are 2-3" long tubes that cover the plant. The leaves are small
and have serrated edges. Could grow in mild areas along the
coast or in California. We grow our plants in containers which
have withstood 15 F. 1 gal $ 18.00
A. MOSANENSIS - This fragrant abelia is said to be as
fragrant as a lilac. The pink buds open up to pinkish white
flowers in late spring. Grows to 4-5' tall and wide.
1 gal. $ 16.00
ABELIOPHYLLUM
A. DISTICHUM 'PINK STAR'. The plants can get 5-6' tall
and in late February the small pink flowers will cover the bare
stems. The flowers are lightly scented in that period of time
between the witch hazels and the early magnolias. We suggest
that your plant be grown with some frost protection in colder
climates. 1 gal. $ 24.00
A. DISTICHUM 'ROSEUM' - This white forsythia is
pink ! The light pink flowers appear in late February on a 5-6'
open shrub. The plant has fragrant flowers and could probably
be a good host for a small flowered clematis or an annual
vine. 1 gal. $ 15.00
ABIES
A. KOREANA 'HORSTMANN'S SILBERLOCKE' -
The Korean fir is a handsome plant on its own with weird dark
green needles that recurve to show the white undersides. This
slow grower eventually becomes a small tree but takes many
years. The cones are held upright and complete a beautiful
picture. 1 gal. $ 35.00
ACER
A. CAMPESTRE 'CARNIVAL' - The English hedge maple
is sheared and grown all over England in mixed hedges. The
species is multibranched and suckering. A. campestre
'Carnival' is a very small tree (large shrub) with small leaves
that have wide white margins. The plant looks totally white
from a distance. Our plant is grown in afternoon shade, as full
sun can cause sunburn. 1 gal. $ 28.00
A. CIRCINATUM 'MONROE' - This cut leaf vine maple
was discovered in the Cascade mountains just east of our
garden. Our 30 year old plant is 12' X 12' and looks much like
A. japonicum 'Aconitifolium'. 1 gal. $ 38.00
A. CIRCINATUM 'SUNGLOW' - One of our western
natives. This golden form of vine maple makes a large shrub
or small tree with yellow leaves through spring and early
summer followed by a yellow-peach fall color.
1 gal. $ 40.00
A. CONSPICUUM 'PHOENIX' - This striped bark maple
has brilliant red-coral new growth in the winter. The leaves
will turn yellow-orange in fall on this 30' upright small tree.
1 gal. $ 48.00
A. GRISEUM - Paperbark Maple - Perhaps the finest,
most beautiful of all small trees. Leaves are trifoliate,
beautifully colored with brilliant splashes of gold and red for
autumn. The bark splits and peels to reveal a coppery smooth
under-surface. It is rather slow growing and just becomes
more elegant with age. Native to China. We saw the
stunning huge tree collected as seed by Ernest Wilson at the
Arnold Arboretum, Boston. The main trunk is 2-3' through--
WOW! 1 gal. $ 22.00
Nursery Only 20 gal. $125.00
A. JAPONICUM 'ACONITIFOLIUM' - The 'Fernleaf
Maple' from Japan has some of the most beautiful fall color
each year. This plant grows artistically to 15-20'. The leaves
are deeply cut almost to the petiole. The medium green leaves
turn beautiful yellow, orange, and red in the fall.
1 gal. $ 40.00
A. MACROPHYLLUM - For those that have 1/2 acre
for one tree, our native bigleaf maple is just what you want. A.
macrophyllum U.S. native to most areas of western America
and has leaves that can be one foot across. This fast grower
will make shade quickly but isn't good to grow lawn under
because it is too dark. In the correct spot it is a wonderful tree.
1 gal. $ 15.00
A. MACROPHYLLUM 'MOCHA ROSE' - This form
has lovely chocolate pink leaves in spring to early summer.
This plant will eventually become a large tree but may take a
long time. The new growth is a handsome change from the
normal green 3 gal. $ 45.00
A. MAXIOMIXIANUM (NIKKOENSE). This hardy
trifoliate maple is similar to Acer griseum but doesn't have the
peeling bark. The bark on A. maxiomixianum is soft gray.
The fall color is brilliant orange, red and yellow.
2 gal. $ 48.00
A. PALMATUM 'BENI SCHICHIHENGE' - This
maple has an upright growth to 10-12' tall. The variegated
leaves will have coral margins in spring turning creamy-pink
in summer. The plant will look lovely brightening up a quiet
corner of the garden. 2 gal. $ 45.00
A. PALMATUM 'FAIRY HAIR' comes to us from
plantsman Talon Buchholz. We had A. 'Fairy Hair' two years
ago and sold out very quickly because of the hairlike leaves.
The maple leaf is so fine it's almost hard to imagine it's a
maple. This plant makes an excellent container specimen or a
good plant for the rock garden. 1 gal. $ 85.00
A. PALMATUM 'FIRST GHOST' has white mid ribs on
the leaves that darken to deep green at the margins. This
Talon Buchholz selection makes an attractive small tree.
1 gal. $ 42.00
A. PALMATUM 'GEISHA' is a small growing Japanese
maple which has lovely pink new growth in spring. The new
growth is spotted with green and peachy colored highlights.
There will be color throughout the summer on the leaves
making a long lasting event all summer.
1 gal. $ 35.00
A. PALMATUM 'MOONFIRE' is a moderate (20')
purple leafed Japanese maple. The deep purple new growth
fades a little, but will stay a good purple all summer. Fall
color will be bright red. 1 gal. $ 35.00
A. PALMATUM 'ORENGOLA ' has new growth that
is orange red in spring. The foliage will turn deep purple later
in the season with the sporadic new orange growth will make a
nice combination. The dissected leaves will turn red in the

fall. Depending on training, the plant can get 2' tall or up to 6'
tall. 2 gal. $44.00
A. PALMATUM 'PIXIE' - This is a Talon Buchholz
selection that is a dense shrub form. Our young plants seem to
be vigorous, but will fill out soon. The foliage is dark purple
even late in the summer. Would be beautiful in the garden or
large container. 5 gal. $ 65.00
A. PALMATUM 'PURPLE GHOST' - Deep purple veins
are almost black. The leaves change throughout purple to
almost pink at the margins. By late summer the leaves are
almost totally purple. This ghost will grow in full sun or semishade.
1 gal. $ 42.00
ACER PALMATUM 'RED DRAGON'. This maple came
to us indirectly from Duncan & Davies in New Zealand. The
dissected leaves are darker red than A. 'Crimson Queen' and
hold the color later into the summer. This lace leaf will turn a
smaller mound shaped form than A. p. 'Crimson Queen'.
Great red fall foliage in October. 2 gal. $ 45.00
A. PALMATUM 'SANGO KAKU'- The Coral Bark
Maple is a plant we always get calls for. This stunning upright
Maple has small deep green leaves that are twisted and
crimped at their margins. The leaves will form clumps on the
plant making an artistic effect. In fall the foliage turns deep
yellow-orange. Our 40 year old plant is 15' X 8' without any
pruning. 2 gal. $ 45.00
A. PALMATUM 'SKEETERS BROOM'. This plant is a
sport of A. p. 'Bloodgood' which will get 4-5' tall rather than
the 20' of A. p. 'Bloodgood. The bright red new growth will
turn purple later in the summer. In fall the foliage will turn
beautiful red. 1 gal. $ 45.00
A. PALMATUM 'UKIGUMO' - Truly a stunning foliage
plant. The plant has green leaves when young. As the plant
matures growth slows, the leaves become spotted with white.
Later the leaves become mostly white and from a distance it
looks like a white shrub or small tree. Seems to be best in
more shade than less. 2 gal. $ 60.00
A. PENNSYLVANICUM 'ERYTHROCLADUM' - The
"Moosewood" is a striped bark maple from Pennsylvania
similar to Acer davidii, hersi, etc. The main difference is that
A. p. 'Erythrocladum' has startling brilliant red bark in winter.
A. 'Erythrocladum' is still a rare tree because of its slow
growth and difficulty of grafting. 1 gal. $ 45.00
A. PSEUDOPLATANUS 'ESK SUNSET' - (formerly
A. 'Eskimo Sunset') This moderate 20' tree has simply
stunning foliage. The maple leaves are dark purple underneath
and are deep green splashed with white and pink above. In the
sun the leaves absolutely glow with the purple and pink. An
A. 'Esk Sunset' is always a conversation piece.
2 gal. $ 78.00
A. RUFINERVE ERYTHROCLADUM - This fine
striped bark maple is different than A. penn. 'Erythroclaum' so
don't be confused. We were able to find a small number.
Plants seem to be bushy and full to maybe 20-25'. We rarely
get this plant as our propagator says it maybe has a 5% success
at grafting. 2 gal. $ 50.00
www.gosslerfarms.com
2
A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUREUM' - This gorgeous
maple has golden foliage all summer. In the fall the leaf is
even more beautiful having yellow leaves with red margins.
1 gal. $ 46.00
Large sizes available up to 8' at nursery only.
A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUTUMN MOON' - Similar to
A. s. 'Aureum' but this small tree has handsome pinkish
accents on the new foliage. The accents seem to hold most of
the summer and turn a beautiful gold in the fall.
1 gal. $ 46.00
ACTEA 'HILLSIDE BLACK BEAUTY' - This dark
purple foliaged bug bane will make a clump 18" tall and 24"
wide shrub. The flowers appear on 4' stems in late summer.
Actea 'Hillside Black Beauty' will make a lovely color accent
for the woodland garden or perennial boarder.
1 gal. $ 14.00
AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM 'LACINIATA' is a
shrubby plant with very dissected narrow leaves of a chestnut.
We don't know how big the plants will be but they are
extremely slow in containers. Very limited availability.
1 gal. $ 44.00
AGAPANTHUS
A. 'ELLAMAE' - This is said to be one of the largest
growing of the agapanthus. The deep blue flowers are in
umbles in late July and will make a beautiful bridge from the
mid summer to the late summer flowers. From our growing
these agapanthus for many years, they will defoliate most
winters and will survive down to 5° F.
1 gal. $ 14.00
A. 'GAYLE'S LILAC' - is a low growing agapanthus
that attracts attention each July-August. This baby blue
flowered plant blooms heavily on 1' stems. A. Gayle's Lilac
makes a good container plant or a sunny boarder.
1 gal. $ 14.00
A. 'GRAS KOP'- This selection of A. inapertus has
deep blue pendulous flowers in midsummer. This plant was
named and introduced by the Kirstenbosch Botanic Garden in
South Africa. We don't know the hardiness yet but this plant
would make an excellent container plant or plant for the
milder garden. 1 gal. $ 14.00
A. 'STORMCLOUD '- According to Wim Snoeijer's
book, this plant no longer exists, but whatever this excellent
plant is named, it is a keeper. The rich navy blue flowers
appear on 2' stems in August. We have grown A. 'Stormcloud'
for 20 years and it has been consistently hardy (0 F) and
beautiful. 1 gal. $ 12.00
AGAVE
A. 'JAWS' - This Agave makes a superb container plant
in cooler climates. Its biggest need is for a very fast draining
soil. 1 gal. $ 18.00
A. PARRYI 'HUACHENSIS' - will make a rounded
clump of gray-green leaves. This high elevation native to
Mexico makes a great container plant. 1 gal. $ 15.00
A. PARRYI 'TRUNCATA' - The blue gray leaves
form an upright rounded plant with an amazing architectural
form. Perfect for a container. We grow our agaves under the
eaves of Marj's house year round. 1 gal. .$ 15.00

A. 'SHARKSKIN SHOES' - This hybrid is from the
Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, CA (P.S. If ever in the
interesting plant is rarely offered for sale. These are small but
well rooted plants. 1 gal. $ 30.00
ARBUTUS
A. 'MARINA' - This garden worthy madrone is probably
a cross of two European species of arbutus. The stems peel to
reveal the orange-copper bark. A. 'Marina' needs good
drainage and a moderate climate, such as coastal condition of
Northwest or California. We once saw a big plant at the
Victor Reiter, Jr. garden in San Francisco and it was a
stunning tree. 1 gal. $ 25.00
to be. B. 'Gold Pillar' looks great! 1 gal. $ 18.00
B. 'ORANGE KING' - Has dark evergreen rounded
1/2") and are deep purple but it's the deep purple foliage in the
spring-summer. Our 'Night Rider' is only 4' tall after 15 years
and would make a handsome container plant. When we've had
plants of C. 'Night Rider' available in the nursery or at sales
they always sell out. 1 gal. $ 24.00
5
C. WILLIAMSII 'WATERLILY' is an upright growing
pink, but with the attractive variegation we can't expect
everything! 1 gal. $ 42.00
2 gal. $ 50.00
C. KOUSA 'BENI FUJI' - has narrow bracts that are
deep pink-red. C.k. 'Beni Fuji' is a shrubby form that can be
trained into a single stem in time. The flowers and foliage are
quite distinctive among the C. Kousa cultivars.
1 gal. $ 42.00
C. KOUSA 'GOLD STAR' - This dogwood has a dark
green leaf with a prominent gold splash in the center. Makes a
handsome focal point. 5 gal. $ 52.00
C. KOUSA 'HEARTTHROB' - is by far the best of the
red bracted forms of C. kousa. Our plant has dramatically
more flowers than any other pink C. kousa cultivar. Our big
plant is 10'x10' and every spring (May-June) has literally
thousands of flowers. we get very few seedpods in the fall but
have great red-orange fall foliage color. Superb plant.
C. KOUSA 'SUMMER FUN' - This great offering from
Talon Buchholz has accentuated long leaves. The light green
leaves have a broad creamy variegated margin all summer.
the cream margin turns rich glowing pink.
2 gal. $ 52.00
C. KOUSA 'WOLF EYES' - Lovely light gray-green
leaves with creamy white edges. This small tree can grow in
full sun and not burn. We still wouldn't put it in south facing
sun. The bracts are ivory white. 2 gal. $ 56.00
C. MAS 'VARIEGATA' - The Cornelian Cherry comes
from eastern Europe and is grown for a source of vitamin C.
The fruit makes a great jelly. Flowers are produced in late
January and are golden yellow. This cultivar has variegated
white, pink green foliage so creates an almost year round small
tree. 2 gal. $ 58.00

C. SANGUINEA 'ARCTIC SUN' - (C. sanguinea 'Canto'
PPAF) Developed by Andre Van Nijnatten in Holland. The
stems are golden yellow with rich red at the tips. Keep
watching for more beautiful stemmed cornus as there are many
stunning selections coming in the future.
1 gal. $ 20.00
C. SANGUINEA 'COMPRESSA' - According to Paul
Cappiello and Don Shadow's Dogwood book, this is a,
"Bizarre little upright plant... without a doubt this is a plant
geeks plant." I'm glad I'm a plant geek! The upright growth to
6'-8' will be at most 1' wide. We use our plants as an
exclamation point to add height to the border. The leaves
literally grow one on top of the other.
1 gal. $ 30.00
C. SANGUINEA 'MIDWINTER FIRE' - This is the
best dogwood for the color of stem. The base of the plant is
red and changes from yellow to orange towards the growing
tip. A glowing color all winter. Best when stooled each
spring. 1 gal. $ 14.00
3 for $ 36.00
C. STOLONIFERA 'HEDGEROWS GOLD' - We got
this plant from Hedgerows Nursery in Mc Minnville, OR. Our
native streamside dogwood grows into a large shrub. C.ornus
stolonifera 'Hedgerows Gold' is a very adaptable plant as well
as being a beautiful golden variegated shrub. We prune our
plant to 18" each year. It immediately regrows to 5' each
summer. Would be a good foil for golden flowers in a
perennial border. 1 gal. $ 17.00
COROKIA COTONEASTER - The wire netting shrub has
dark stems that bend and twist to form an unusual shrub up to
6-7'. The corokias make excellent container subjects. Hardy
to perhaps 10° F. though our plants have been in the garden
for 11 years without any damage. Most books say this plant
doesn't flower, but our plants are covered with yellow flowers
in spring. 1 gal. $ 14.00
CORREA 'MARION'S MARVEL' The Australian
fuchsia has rich pink flowers during late winter. Makes a
good container plant (hardy to 10-15° F) or a mounding shrub
in California or the Oregon coast. 1 gal. $ 12.00
CORYLOPSIS -
C. GOTOANA has typical yellow flowers like all the
winter hazels, but they are smaller than C. spicata. The foliage
is also smaller than C. spricata. This corylopsis is an
intermediate between C. pauciflora and C. spicata.
1 gal. $ 18.00
C. 'LONGWOOD CHIMES' - This hybrid has long soft
yellow flowers in early March. We only have a few plants
available this year. 1 gal. $ 24.00
C. PAUCIFLORA - This is one of the finest of all shrubs
we grow. C. pauciflora has a grace about it year round. In
winter the branches form a lacy effect with dark colored,
swollen flower buds. In March, the light yellow racemes
cover the plant. 1 gal. $ 18.00
C. SPICATA - A larger flowered species. The yellow
flowers have red stamens which is a very attractive feature.
The foliage is larger than other species.
1 gal. $ 16.00
8
C. SPICATA 'AUREA' - We first saw this plant 3 or 4
years ago in Seattle. The new growth has a pink-purple color
and the full matured leaves will be beautiful golden yellow all
summer. The plant will have the typical 2" racemes in March
and the will carry through the summer with golden foliage.
1 gal. $ 16.00
C. WILLMOTTAE 'SPRING PURPLE' - This
corylopsis came from Hilliers originally. The new growth has
distinctive purple foliage on the plant. C.w. 'Spring Purple' is
an open 10'-12' shrub that many summers will hold the purple
new growth until mid-July. 1 gal. $ 22.00
CORYLUS 'RED MAJESTIC' . This is a new cultivar of
Harry Lauder's Walking Stick from Europe. The plant is
contorted everywhere (We haven't checked the roots yet.).
The difference is C. 'Red Majestic' has deep purple foliage so
will make a striking plant year round. This is one of the first
offerings of C. 'Red Majestic' . 1 gal. $24.00
COTINUS
C. 'GOLDEN SPIRIT' - We were first attracted to C.
'Golden Spirit' through English magazines, but couldn't find it
in the U.S. We started seeing a few plants in public gardens
by 2001. I finally found a source in 2001. The foliage is
round and smaller than many of the C. coggygria cultivars.
The distinctive difference is the golden color of the foliage
which is consistent spring-fall. This plant should be great used
in a border with greens and yellows or rich purples.
1 gal. $ 22.00
C. 'GRACE' is one of our best discoveries. We first listed
C. 'Grace' in 1993, and are still impressed with how great this
shrub can be. We got this Hillier named hybrid in the mid
1980's as a one foot cutting. Our original plant is cut back
hard each spring to 6' and by the end of the season is 12-14'
high. The large mid purple leaves are pretty all summer, and
by fall they turn the most amazing pink, red, orange and
purple. As a cut back plant we get only a few flowers (no
great loss) but the foliage is superb.
1 gal. $ 22.00
C. 'ROYAL PURPLE' - This smoke bush is the
standard cultivar available through the nursery industry. The
oval, deep purple leaves cover the plant and can make an
impressive background shrub for a shrub or perennial border.
The fall color will be deep red, purple and pink. The flowers
are large puffs of fertile florets during summer, making smoke
above the foliage. 1 gal. $ 20.00
C. 'YOUNG LADY' ® - This green leafed C. coggygria
has many large clusters of flowers (smoke) even on 6 inch
plants. Discovered by Hendrick Kolster of Boskoop, Holland.
The green leaves have orange-red fall color. The plant
probably will not get over
$ 24.00
8-10 feet because of the heavy
flower production. Limited 1 gal. $ 24.00
C. OBOVATUS - is our eastern native smoke bush. We
were at Jane Platt's Portland garden many years ago to see her
20' tree with stunning pink fall color. The oval foliage is 8"-
10" long and 2" wide and will have a pinkish blush in spring,
light green summer color and the unusual pink fall color. C.
obovatus is the larger parent of the superb C. 'Grace.'
1 gal. $ 26.00

COTONEASTER COOPERI. A very low growing
cotoneaster that will mound up to about 3-4" tall. If a rock is
in the way C. cooperi will follow the shape of the stone. The
evergreen leaves are really tiny and deep green. Great as a
container plant or even the smallest rock garden. The white
flowers will be followed by rich red fruit like rubies among the
green foliage. 1 gal. $ 8.00
CRINODENDRON HOOKERANIUM - Strawberries in
midsummer on as evergreen shrub. Well at least that is what it
looks like. C. hookeranium is from southern Chile and will
make a 20' broad evergreen shrub with narrow deep green
leaves. In July, the strawberry shaped flowers cover the plant.
This superb plant can be grown from the central California
coast to British Columbia. Please don't try east of the
Cascades. If it gets into a box and finds itself going east, it will
immediately collapse! 1 gal. $ 22.00
CRATAEGUS MONOGYNA INERMIS 'COMPACTA' -
A dwarf hawthorn which is very compact and full. Our 20+
year old is 10 feet tall and 18 inches across. Very dark foliage,
but so far no flowers or fruit. 1 gal. $ 25.00
CROCOSMIA -
C. 'GEORGE DAVIDSON' - An old cultivar from
England with mid yellow flowers in August.
1 gal. $ 12.00
C. 'LADY HAMILTON' - Has a dark green leaf with a
purple red flush on the lower portion. The flowers are darker
gold with tiny maroon spots at the base of lower petals. Found
in 1907 at Powis Castle, Wales.
1 gal. $ 12.00
C. 'SOLFATARE' - Probably our favorite crocosmia.
C. 'Solfatare' has chocolate brown foliage like an iris. The
spray like flowers are golden yellow during late July-August.
The colors (flowers and foliage) are easy to combine with
other plants. We have a good supply of large plants available
this year. 1 gal. $ 16.00
C 'STAR OF THE EAST' - Perhaps the biggest flower of
any crocosmia. This crocosmia has wonderful lively yellow
flowers that are 2" across with an almost white center. The
flower petals end up being flat when they are fully open. The
foliage is one of the shortest of any crocosmia we grow.
1 gal. $ 16.00
CUNNINGHAMIA LANCEOLATA 'GLAUCA'. The blue
needled China fir is always a show stopper in any garden.
This large conifer has needles that twist as they come out of
the stems. C. lanceolata 'Glauca' will need to be trained to
make a leader and form a tree. 2 gal. $ 35.00
CUPRESSUS
C. 'GREENSTEAD MAGNIFICANT' - This
cupressus has a lovely gray-blue -green foliage on a low
growing plant. Our biggest plant has grown 12" tall and 18"
wide after 5-6 years. The arching habit makes for a handsome
container plant. 1 gal. $ 15.00
C. SEMPERVIRENS 'GLAUCA' - The Italian Cypress
can get to 40' tall and 6' wide in several lifetimes. This classic
Mediterranean plant has deep green foliage and is the perfect
large evergreen to draw anyone's attention to your garden.
Plants in the Eugene, Or. area have withstood -12°F
2 gal. $ 24.00
9
C. SEMPERVIRENS 'TOTEM POLE' -is essentially
a small version of the full sized species. This plant will get
8'-10' in time and would work well for the smaller garden.
1 gal. $ 20.00
CYTISUS BATTANDIERI - The Pineapple Broom comes
from Morocco, but has been hardy for 30+ years in Eugene,
OR, hardy to -12° F. If given full sun and good drainage this
soft gray-green, large shrub will cover itself with flowers.
The flowers are dark yellow and smell like fresh pineapple.
Our plants in the garden are 15' tall after 10 years.
1 gal. $ 24.00
DAPHNE -
D. BHOLUA - Our original plants came from Marshall
Olbrich (Western Hills Nsy). This is the largest daphne in
the world it can grow to 20' in shade. Borderline hardiness
here. We had our plant outside until 8°F. These great
container plants start blooming at Thanksgiving and finish in
March. Pleasing, sweet daphne fragrance.
1 gal. $ 22.00
D. 'ETERNAL FRAGRANCE' (D. caucasica x D.
collina) According to Robin White this plant is probably the
same cross as D.'Jim's Pride.' The plant will flower in April
and May with white flowers with some pink color on the
perianth tube. Our plants bloom sporadically after that
through summer and into fall. The plant will grow to 2' and
make a great plant in sun and good drainage.
1 gal. $ 15.00
D. HOUTTTEANA. This fairly recent introduction has
deep purple leaves year round. The small mounding shrub
will get 18-24" tall and will have reddish pink flowers in the
spring with a pleasing scent. Although amazingly rare, we
have a good supply this year.. 2 gal. $ 45.00
D. 'JIM'S PRIDE' (formerly caucasica) - This is one of
our favorite daphnes because of its overwhelming bloom
season. The fragrant flowers first open in April and finish most
years in late October. I can't think of any plant that will bloom
that long. The white flowers are fairly small but cover the
plant and makes a great display. Named for the late Jim Cross
of Environmental's Nursery, Long Island, NY.
1 gal. $ 22.00
D. LONGILOBATA is a 4'-5' daphne with whitishgreen
flowers through the spring and summer. For us, the large
red fruit are much showier than the flowers. Rarely available
and probably slightly tender, but worth growing for the fruit.
1 gal. $ 28.00
D. MEZEREUM - Rough, tough, hardy, but still beautiful.
This is probably the hardiest daphne in cultivation. Grows
better in Eastern Washington than in our garden. The purple
flowers start in January and cover the stems. The flowers are
followed by red fruit in late summer.
1 gal. $ 14.00
D.. ODORA 'ALBA' - Similar to D. odora
'Aureomarginata' but doesn't have the yellow margin on the
leaves. Flowers are snow white and just as fragrant as the
species. 1 gal. $ 38.00
D. ODORA 'AUREOMARGINATA' - To most people
the best fragrance of any shrub. The small purple and white
flowers appear in February - April and the scent can be noticed
20 feet away. Makes an evergreen shrub with golden
margins on the foliage. Can be kept in a large container.
1 gal. $ 18.00

D. ODORA 'MAE JIMA'. A Japanese selection of this
standard of northwest landscapes. D. o. 'Mae Jima' has the
same coloring and margins of D. o. 'Aureomarginata', but the
margins are drastically wider. This daphne will bloom as
much as D. o. 'Aureomarginata,' but will be much more
striking year round. We haven't seen this daphne listed before
so get this new plant for your garden.
2 gal. $ 35.00
D. ODORA 'ZUIKO NISHIKI ' - The deep pink flower
buds open to pure white inside the flowers. We have read that
D. 'Zuiko Nishiki' is hardier than other forms of D. odora. Any
clones of D. odora have an unbelievable scent to the flowers.
2 gal. $ 28.00
D. RETUSA - This shrub is a very rigid, little gnome of a
plant. The fat short stems grow slowly into an 18" rounded
shrublet. The flowers are sweetly scented and are purple
outside and white inside. Needs good drainage and plenty of
light. Since D. retusa is slow growing the plants for sale are
small. 1 gal. $ 20.00
D. ROSETTII - (D. cneorum X D laureola, subsp.
philippi). Found in 1927, this natural hybrid comes from
Pyrenees. The reddish flowers are rarely produced but the
rounded dwarf form makes D. rosettii worth growing.
LIMITED 1 gal. $ 20.00
D. TANGUTICA is a 2' X 3' irregular shrub with deep
green leaves. The small clusters of purple flowers cover the
plant in April-May. The fragrance is different than other
daphnes but is still wonderful. 1 gal. $ 12.00
D. 'WILHELM SCHACHT' (D. petraca x D. collina) -
This fine small grower has tiny deep green foliage. The
flowers are brilliant pink-purple and have a big burst of bloom
in April-May and a few flowers during the rest of spring.
When grown if full sun and good drainage, this plant is a real
show stopper. 2 gal. $ 28.00
DAVIDIA
D. INVOLUCRATA 'COLUMNARIUS'. This dove tree
is a rather narrow grower. The foliage is typical dove tree, but
the plant stays very columnar. We don't know how soon these
plants will take to bloom but being grafted they will usually
bloom at a younger age than seed grown plants.
2 gal. $ 60.00
D. INVOLUCRATA 'SONOMA' - This flowering dove
tree came from Sonoma Horticultural Nursery. The original
tree had exceptional bracts and luckily the owners got it out
into the nursery business. Bracts are 8-10" long and the
grafted plants will bloom at 18 inches tall. Any of the plants
we are selling can bloom next May. Because of the grafting
and scarcity these plants are limited and high priced
1 gal. $ 75.00
D. 'LADY SUNSHINE' - Talk about a show stopper!
People see this plant and literally have their breath taken away.
The foliage is the typical jagged edge of Davidia involucrata,
but the margins have very broad golden yellow margins on
them. We first saw this plant 4 years ago and were impressed
and of course wanted the plant. Davidia 'Lady Sunshine'
needs filtered or afternoon shade.
WOW ! 2 gal. $150.00
DECAISNEA FARGESII - is a weird plant that comes
from China. The stems grow sparingly upright to 12'-14' and
will have 18" pinnate leaves. The flowers are strange and
10
Decaisnea fargesii cont.
somewhat hooded green in June. By late summer the green
fruit expand to 3" fat bean pods. By late September the fruit
will turn metallic blue and taste like a kiwi but are 95% seed
and skin. 1 gal. $ 20.00
asks, "What holly is that?" In the mid summer orange-red
flowers with yellow flares appear among the leaves. This
plant makes an interesting shrub for the container or in the
garden in warmer areas (California, Oregon coast).
1 gal. $ 22.00
in May-June. This six foot plant is covered with these
beautiful flowers. 1 gal. $ 16.00
clusters of flowers in April- May. This 4' shrub is very
adaptable as to soil and climate. The flowers literally cover the
plant in spring. 1 gal. $ 16.00
DICHORA FIBRIFUGA - This hydrangea relative has small
bright blue flowers in mid summer. The flowers don't have
sterile florets like hydrangeas. The flowers are followed by
shiny blue fruit in the fall. We have two forms available:
UBC (University of British Columbia) form is low growing
with brilliant blue fruit. 5 gal. $ 40.00
Dichora versicolor has a broader leaf and much larger size
than the UBC form. Both are lovely plants.
5 gal. $ 40.00
DIERAMA PULCHERRIMUM- The flowers are on
nodding stems that can be white, pink, deep purple. The
"Angels' Fishing Rod" has grassy foliage to 2' and 5-6' arching
flower stems in mid summer. 3" pot $ 5.00
DISANTHUS CERCIDIFOLIUS - This is a superb 12'-15'
shrub grown for its stunning purple, red, and orange fall color.
The heavily veined foliage is very dark green and leathery
during summer and in late August starts turning purple and all
through the fall just keeps getting better. Disanthus
cercidifolius is a member of the hamamelis family and has
very small, deep maroon flowers in fall. Has been hardy to at
least -20° F. in Illinois. See Michael Dirr's "Manual of Woody
Landscape Plants". Disanthus is one of his favorites.
DISPORUM 'NIGHT HERON'. Will get 5-6' tall and has
deep purple new growth in spring. The flowers are small
white bells in mid spring. D. 'Night Heron' is a good
companion plant in the woodland garden with ferns and
hostas. In fall, the foliage will turn a soft peachy yellow
before going beneath the soil for winter.
1 gal. $ 14.00
DISTYLIUM
D. MYRICOIDES - is an evergreen witchazel with deep
green narrow leaves. The 3'-4' tall plant makes an arching
shrub that will bloom with red puffs of flowers in early spring.
the woodland garden. 1 gal. $ 20.00

DRIMYS
D. LANCEOLATA - This Chilean native has small lanceshaped
dark evergreen leaves. The dark foliage is highlighted
by the purple-red stems. Plants we've seen are only 6-8' tall,
but may get bigger. We grow as a handsome container plant.
Plants in Eugene have survived in the ground for many years
in more protected areas than in our garden. Flowers are small
and white but make a nice show on the plant.
2 gal. $ 25.00
D. LANCEOLATA 'SUZETTE' is just like D. lanceolata
with its deep green leaves, dark purple stems, and white
flowers. The only difference is that the dark green leaves are
splashed with cream and pink year round D. lancelata 'Suzette'
will make a pretty and interesting tub specimen.
1 gal $20.00
EDGEWORTHIA
E. CHRYSANTHA - Edgeworthia chrysantha is a golden
yellow daphne relative. The flowers are double the size of E.
papyrifera and are pleasantly fragrant. In summer the plant
looks tropical with its large, dark green leaves. Has been
hardy to 0° F several times but our best plants have some wind
protection. 1 gal. $ 25.00
E. PAPYRIFERA is the smaller of the two species we
grow, but is still a pretty plant. The flowers are the same as E.
chrysantha except in size and lack of fragrance. E. papyrifera
is a much smaller plant so will be more adapted to a smaller
garden. E. papyrifera seems to need some shelter from
evergreens, a wall or a house to give just slightly more
protection from the winds. 1 gal. $ 27.00
E. PAPYRIFERA 'RED DRAGON' - Very limited,
this plant is always in demand but is so tricky to propagate, so
very few nurseries will make the effort. The red (tomato soup)
flowers appear in clusters just like the yellow flowering E.
papyrifera in early spring. We have found E. p. 'Red Dragon' is
more tender than E. papyrifera. We grow our 4'x4' plant in
morning sun in a protected place next to Eric and Dawn's
house. Only 1 per customer. 1 gal. $ 45.00
ELEAGNUS
E. PUNGENS 'MACULATA' - Evergreen with golden
blotch in leaf center. Can grow in full sun to fairly heavy
shade. Great plant for foliage arrangements.
1 gal. $ 16.00
E. PUNGENS 'GILT EDGE' - The broad golden
margins on this evergreen shrub will make a fabulous display
all year round. The plant will grow in full sun to semi shade.
Once established for a couple of years, this plant needs very
little water. 1 gal. $ 18.00
ELEUTHEROCOCCUS SIEB. 'VARIEGATUS'-
Formerly Acanthapanax sieboldianus 'Variegatus'. This
variegated shrub is almost a wonder plant because it will grow
in Chicago as well as northern Florida. Eleutherococcus
grows in almost full sun as well as deep shade. Our plant
grows under a huge red oak in full day shade and thrives. The
white margined leaves almost glow out from the shade. This
plant has so little green for chlorophyll it is very slow
ENKIANTHUS
E. 'AKATUKI' - This enkianthus has medium pink
flowers in April - May. The thing we notice is its great vigor.
the dark green foliage turns brilliant red in fall.
2 gal. $ 22.00
11
E. CAMPANULATUS 'RED VELVET' - Rich darker red
flowers than the typical E. campanulatus. The flowers appear
in April and May. The dark green foliage turns wonderfully
red in fall. 1 gal. $ 22.00
2 gal. $ 30.00
E. CAMPANULATUS 'SHOWY LANTERN' is a deep
red flowering enkianthus. The flower are smaller than many
cultivars, but each flower is much brighter color. This brighter
color will show off the clusters of flowers better than many of
the larger hybrids. The fall foliage color is brilliant red on an
8-10' shrub. 1 gal. $ 22.00
E. CAMPANULATUS 'SIKOKIANUS' - The largest
growing of the E. campanulatus cultivars we grow. This
upright grower grows fast and has large deep green leaves that
turn deep maroon-red and have pink markings on them.
1 gal. $ 22.00
E. CAMPANULATUS 'VARIEGATUS' -
E. campanulatus 'Variegatus' has small green leaves with
creamy white margins. We don't think the plant will get much
more that 3-4' tall. Haven't seen many flowers on our plants,
but the main use is for the variegated foliage. The plant will
need to be grown in at least partial shade.
2 gal. $ 28.00
E. PERRULATUS - This is the true species from Japan,
not the inferior plant sold most of the time. Our 40 year old
plant is 4'x4' and is full to the ground with small deep green
leaves all summer. In fall, the plant is afire with its red leaves.
The flowers are small pink-white urns in May. The flowers are
different than any other enkianthus so its hard to believe some
nurseries get confused! 1 gal. $ 30.00
EPIMEDIUM -
E. FROLEITHIN - Brilliant golden yellow flowers on
stems up to 12" tall. The evergreen foliage holds up well
during most winters, but we take hedge shears to the plants in
January-February. One of the most vigorous growers in the
garden. 1 gal. $ 14.00
E. GRANDIFLORUM - This 6" epimedium has white
flowers in spring. The slowly spreading woodlander is a good
companion for ferns, spring bulbs and other woodlanders.
1 gal. $ 14.00
E. 'O'KUDA'S WHITE' - A low growing epimedium that
has large white spurred flowers in early spring. For us this is
the best of the white flowering epimediums. A great plant to
grow with omphaloides and other small woodland charmers.
1 gal. $ 18.00
E. RUBRUM - This variety of epimedium has medium
red flowers in spring. When we pick up the flower and look
close there is a yellow stripe surrounded by the red. Still a
good garden plant even though it's been grown a long time.
1 gal. $ 10.00
E. SULPHUREUM - This soft yellow flowering
epimedium forms handsome clumps in the garden. We've had
E. sulphureum in our garden for years, and we have finally
divided our plants so we can make it available.
1 gal. $ 15.00
E. YOUNGIANUM 'NIVEUM' - This low growing
epimedium has copius amount of white flowers in the spring.
E.y 'Niveum' will slowly make a lacy ground cover for small
areas. 1 gal. $ 15.00
EUCOMUS 'SPARKLING BURGUNDY' is a deep purple
leafed pineagpple lily that will get to 18" tall. The foliage
appears out of the ground in spring and almost bursts into
growth. In late summer the 2' flower stalks have flower
clusters that look like pinapples. We grow our plants in full
sun with plenty of mulch but have seen stunning plants
growing out of gravel. 1 gal. $ 12.00
EUCRYPHIA -
E. GLUTINOSA - This is the hardiest of the eucrypihas.
This deciduous large shrub will have white flowers in July-
August. The flowers are honey scented and are 2" across with
a large base of stamens. 1 gal. $ 20.00
E. MILLIGINII - Said to get to be a small tree, but so far
we only have an 18" specimen after several years. The leaves
are dark evergreen and tiny. Looks like a very small
Eucryphia lucida. Flowers are small white in summer. Only
adapted to coastal California or the Northwest.
1 gal. $ 20.00
EUONYMUS
E. 'GREEN SPIRE' is a columnar evergreen euonymus.
handsome irregular hedge or individual specimen.
1 gal. $ 10.00
EXOCHORDA 'THE BRIDE' - Pearl Bush is an arching
shrub up to 4' tall. Our plant is only 18" tall and 36" across.
The gray-blue foliage is fairly narrow and makes a nice foil for
the strands of pearls. The buds are held in 2-3" strands and
open to crenulated white flowers. Would be a nice plant to
cascade over a retaining wall.
2 gal. $ 17.00
FAGUS
F. SYLVATICA 'ANSORGEI' - This beech has very
narrow leaves ( 1 /2" wide x 6" long). The dark purple leaves
with a handsome weeping form. The black-purple leaves hold
their color all summer. 1 gal. $ 45.00
F. SYLVATICA 'DAWYCK GOLD' - Found and named
in 1969 by JRP Van Hoey-Smith. This columnar tree has
golden yellow new growth. During the summer our plant
(20' X 3') fades some, but still has a yellow look to the tree.
2 gal. $ 45.00
F. SYLVATICA 'TRICOLOR' - The tricolor beech has
stunning new growth in spring. The white, pink and purple
foliage makes the tree look like it's in flower. As summer
proceeds the foliage darkens but is still attractive. Best
planted so the morning or evening sun can filter through and
make an exciting display. 1 gal $ 35.00
FATSHEDRA
F. LIZEI 'CURLY' has wavy evergreen foliage year
round and can be left as a large scale ground cover growing
perhaps 2-3' tall and 4-5' wide. 1 gal. $ 20.00
F. LIZEI 'VARIEGATA'. This plant is a cross between
ivy and fatsia. The irregular plant doesn't climb but can be
coaxed into an upright form on a post. The evergreen leaves
are intermediate between ivy and fatsiia in size and have a
creamy margin. 1 gal. $ 20.00
FERNS - We have expanded our selection of ferns
dramatically this year so we have put them all together
as a category. These easy beautiful plants are a must
for any garden. We can't ever put too many ferns in our
garden so hurry and buy these plants from us so we
don't get carried away.
ARACHNOIDES SIMPLICOR VARIEGATA is an
evergreen fern that will get to about one foot tall. The
deep green leaves will have yellow variegation at the
center of the frond. This fern can brighten a shady spot
on its own, but grows well with many other woodlanders.
1 gal. $ 14.00
ASPLENIUM
A. SCOLOPENDIUM - The Heart's Tongue fern is
an evergreen fern 1-2' tall. This fern does not have the
pinnales as most ferns do. The glossy green leaves are
single, unbranched leaves. The books say it needs
lime, so for a simple idea try planting next to your house
foundation which has lime in the concrete.
1 gal. $ 14.00
A. TRICHOMANES A native all over the northern
hemisphere and is an extraordinarily hardy small fern.
This little clump former will get all of 8" tall with fine
textured fronds. Grows well in a rock garden in excellent
drainage or under our greenhouse propagation benches
with heavy moisture year round. People always ask for
some plants, so we are finally offering plants in the
catalog. 1 gal. $12.00
BLECHNUM CORDATUM - (chiliense). A South
American deer fern that has giant leaves. We got this
beautiful fern from Judith Jones in WA years ago. The
new growth is rusty color and changes to deep green.
The evergreen leaves can get to 4-5' in time. Our plant
has slowly spread to 5' wide. Needs shade, moisture
and not too much cold (10° F.).
1 gal. $ 22.00
DRYOPTERIS
D. CYCADIANA - Although from China, Japan and
Thailand, the books say this fern is very hardy. As the
name implies the foliage looks somewhat like a cycad.
Needs well drained soil in the shade
1 gal. $ 15.00
D. DILATATA RECURVATA - This European to
Asian fern is deep green and will have the pinnae rolled
inwards, making a neat plant for the woodland garden.
northwest or northeast climate.
1 gal. $ 15.00
18" slowly spreading fern. This adaptable plant will take
garden. 1 gal. $ 15.00
Chinese and northern Indian native.
1 gal. $ 15.00
D. WALLICHIANA - One of the greatest hardy ferns.
D. Wallechiana has grown to 6' for us. This fern looks
like a tree fern without the trunk. A great plant for mixing
into the woodland garden with hostas, etc.
1 gal. $ 15.00
OSMUDA
O. REGALIS - The royal fern is a wow! Our 15 year
old plant is 8'x8' and has a 1' trunk almost like a tree
fern. Every year this deciduous fern gets larger foliage
as the plant gets larger. Can grow in really wet soil or
well drained soil. 1 gal. $ 16.00
O. CINNAMOMEA - The cinnamon fern is a happy,
robust 4' fern with light green deciduous fronds. The
dormant. 1 gal. $ 16.00
this elegant evergreen. 1 gal. $ 16.00
1 gal. $ 25.00
dwarf plant is totally covered with brilliant yellow flowers. If
F. KOREANA 'KUMSON' - This forsythia will get up to
6' tall and has typical forsythia flowers. But the flowers are
the least of F. 'Kumson's' attributes. The foliage is dark green
and has a creamy white netting in the spring to fall. Forsythias
usually do their brilliant display in early spring then are
boring. F. 'Kunson' has something happening nine months a
year. 1 gal. $ 12.00
a rich tapestry of reds, oranges and yellow.
1 gal. $ 22.00
2 gal. $ 30.00
F. GARDENII 'JANE PLATT' - We seem to be the only
nursery to carry this fine cultivar. Strange, because of its
great attributes. Fothergilla gardenii 'Jane Platt' is a very low
growing shrub and is the smallest fothergilla we grow (18-24
inches in 15 years). The fall color is brilliant orange, red, and
yellow for an extended season which seems to be much longer
lasting fall color than other cultivar we named for our mentor
and friend, Jane Platt. Also see Magnolia stellata 'Jane Platt'.
1 gal. $ 22.00
F. GARDENII 'MT. AIRY' - This form of fothergilla
only the finest of our natives and this is one of the best.
Garrya elliptica is a native from the Oregon coast south to
Central California. The Saratoga Horticultural Foundation
named this excellent cultivar for its tassels that are up to 12"
long. The evergreen foliage is wavy and rustles in the wind.
when the tassels are like icicles. 1 gal. $ 22.00
GENISTA AETNENSIS- The Mt. Etna Broom. This
Mediterranean native will make a small graceful tree to 20'
few leaves. Genista aetnensis has small bright yellow Scotch
you think of a Scotch Broom, but please try this lovely small,
graceful tree. 1 gal. $ 22.00

with more beautiful fall foliage. 2 gal. $ 30.00
G. BILOBA 'JADE BUTTERFLIES' - This ginkgo is
bushy and full from the time it's a small plant. The normal
brilliant yellow. We have finally found THE ginkgo for our
garden. It's just where can we stuff another tree.
1 gal. $ 28.00
G. BILOBA 'SUMMER RAINBOW'- We found this plant
a couple of years ago in a Portland area nursery. The dark
green leaves have bright yellow stripes running through them.
amazing to consider it is relatively hardy (5° F.) We enjoy the
gray green linear leaves year round, but Grevillia 'Victoriae'
especially the winter flowers. The flowers are just plain odd
twisted coppery color. This is one of the great plants we got
over the years from Western Hills Nursery, Occidental, CA.
1 gal. $ 16.00
GUNNERA CHILENSIS - WOW ! This giant always
receives raves from gardeners. Our plants grow to 10 feet tall
the rich purple fall color. 1 gal. $ 28.00
2 gal. $ 50.00
H. v. 'RED IMP' - Named by Peter Dummer and Roy
Lancaster at Hilliers Nursery, England in 1996. This plant has
bright red fall foliage color. 1 gal. $ 24.00
3 gal. $ 60.00
H. v. 'SANDRA' - One of our favorite fall coloring shrubs.
H.v. 'Sandra' has purple new growth in spring and early
summer. In the fall, the foliage turns glowing red and will
have color for three weeks. We understand that there isn't any
fall color in the southeast. But in our part of the country it is
superb. 2 gal. $ 35.00
5 gal. $ 50.00
H. i. 'SUNBURST' - Has the brightest yellow flowers of
any hamamelis yet. The brilliant flowers are borne in heavy
positively dull when compared to 'Sunburst'.
15
to 12" tall and 18" wide. The tiny silver-gray foliage is pretty
against the dark stems. 1 gal. $ 14.00
HEDYCHIUM 'TARA' - Probably the only ginger (the
spice) that blooms early enough to actually flower in our
garden. Many of the hedychium species we've tried will
bloom for 2 minutes in November and will be puny at that.
H. 'Tara' has beautiful light orange flowers in late August-
September. The plants are upright with narrow leaves. This
perennial can make a striking plant for the tropical look.
5 gal. $ 30.00
attaching the leaf to the stem will be deep purple. The flowers
are upright green trusses. Makes a beautiful woodland plant
for the garden. 1 gal. $ 12.00
H. HYBRIDUS (SEEDLINGS) - These plants are a
hybrid group with mixed colors of pink, white, purple, yellow,
etc. These easy growers are among the best perennials we can
grow in out garden. Although not as showy as the named color
forms, these are great plants for the woodland or perennial
border. 1 gal. $ 12.00
10 1 gal. $ 90.00
H. HYBRIDIS 'APRICOT' - Lovely soft shades of
yellow, pink, peach and apricot. 1 gal. $ 20.00
H. HYBRIDUS DOUBLE - We wanted this plant for
ourselves for years. We bought some seedlings from several
different nurseries and all were poor colored singles. We
found these plants that are white or soft pink and they have all
bloomed, so we can assure you they will bloom as doubles.
We only get a small number of plants and the wholesale price
is high hence the price.
SPRING ONLY 1 gal. $ 20.00
H. 'NEON YELLOW' are deep glowing neon yellow as
the name implies. This is a new plant to us and came from
Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne's breeding program. We saw some
of these plants last year and our eyes practically burned from
the bright neon light. 1 gal. $ 25.00
H. 'BLACK SLATE'. These are the darkest black flowers
of any of the hellebores. We only have a small number
and are part of their excellent breeding program.
1 gal. $ 28.00
HEMEROCALLIS 'CORKY' - This hybrid daylily is not
the daylily breeder's kind of flowers. We see so many
daylilies that have huge gaudy overblown flowers (sorry,
daylily collectors). H 'Corky' is opposite in that flowers are
small (2") and very simple looking like a species. The stems
are dark purple and at 18" will get the yellow flowers above
the foliage. 1 gal. $ 12.00
HOSTA
foliage. We have seen 3' plants in containers with consistent
water with leaves over 1' long and 8" wide. The leaves are
deep green and can have multiple colors like purple and
reddish within the leaf. Each leaf is covered in fine hairs
creating a fuzzy look to the leaves. The flowers are 8-10"
across and are light lavender lace caps in late July.
2 gal. $ 25.00
H. ASPERA 'VILLOSA' - The narrowest leaf of any of
the H. aspera group. Our plant is 10' tall and 8' wide after 25
September. The plant will be much more open in the shade
than in the sun. 1 gal. $ 24.00
H. s. 'BENI GAKU' has lacecap flowers that are pink,
white and red- all on the same plant. Our largest plant is 3' tall
H. 'Lanarth White' seems to be very hardy here.
1 gal. $ 15.00
H. m 'LEMON WAVE' - Similar to H. 'Quadricolor',
but grows for us whereas 'Quadricolor' slowly dies. Very nice
foliage variegation with green, yellow and cream.
1 gal. $20.00
also make a good cut flower. 1 gal. $ 28.00
H. p 'LITTLE LAMB' - (PPAF) This hybrid from the
late Jelena De Belder (Hamamelis 'Jelena') has very small
Mitchum to thank for this fine vine for the shaded garden.
1 gal. $ 15.00
H. PETIOLARIS 'PLATT DWARF' - Please note the
change of the name. We have been selling this plant as
Schizophragma 'Platt's Dwarf'. We have talked to several
knowledgeable experts and they say this fine plant is actually
a climbing hydrangea. The original plant at Jane Platt's garden
was a very small deciduous vine. 1 gal. $ 15.00
H. m 'PIA' - This mop headed hydrangea is under
appreciated by many gardeners. This dwarf hydrangea gets up
to two feet tall. The small rounded flowers can be pink,
is handsome spring to fall. 1 gal. $ 18.00
H. QUERCIFOLIA 'LITTLE HONEY' - This small
growing oakleaf hydrangea will only get 2-3' tall. The great
reason to grow H. q. 'Little Honey' is its handsome golden
yellow leaves. It doesn't seem to make any difference as to
shade or sun to keep the color of the golden leaves. The
flowers are the typical white during summer. Try this new
selection for the dash of golden foliage.
1 gal. $ 22.00
you don't have this plant, try it, you'll like it.
1 gal. $ 22.00
H. p 'QUICK FIRE' - (H. Bulk ppaf). This selection
from plantsman Mark Bulk, Holland, has pink flowers a month
ILEX
I. CRENATA 'DWARF PAGODA' - Teeny leaves are
cuttings. A great conversation piece.
1 gal. $ 12.00
leaves all year round. Any leaves exposed to the sun are
golden, but the shaded leaves are green creating a variegated
effect. This hardy easy plant would make a nice color splash
in the rock garden. 1 gal. $ 14.00
I. 'ROCK GARDEN' - This is the smallest of any hollies
we grow. Large plants are 12"x12" and have typical holly
leaves that are tiny and will cover the plant. As the name
implies, I. 'Rock Garden' makes a perfect plant for the rock
garden or a nice container plant. 1 gal. $ 12.00
no damage. The flowers appear in spring and are small white
star shaped flowers with the evergreen leaves as an attractive
background. 1 gal. $ 16.00
ITEA
I. ILLICIFOLIA - The holly leaf itea has crinkled
maple looking leaves. This 2' plant won't look like much until
August when the large green buds develop. The thickened
petals of the flowers will create a shuttlecock shape.
Kirengshoma must have shade and will form an arching plant
for late summer color. This is a fine plant to grow under
magnolias and other small trees. 1 gal. $ 14.00
plant was found by Pamela, but it was named for her. The 3-
4" tall green plant has creamy white stripes through the
foliage. We have a patch that has very slowly spread to 2'
after 5-6 years. Seems to grow well in the cooler Northwest
whereas many liriopes will sulk.
1 gal. $ 12.00
LOMATIA MYRACOIDES - This rarely grown
evergreen shrub comes from Australia. The Grivellia relative
should be tender but our plant has withstood 0F. The narrow
MAGNOLIA 'DAYBREAK'- M. 'Woodsman' X 'Tina
Durio'- One of August Kehr's best hybrids. It's wild to think
that M. 'Woodsman' with its purple green and yellowish color
could produce this lovely deep pink hybrid. This quick grower
will grow well in many parts of the country.
1 gal. $ 60.00
with only minor damage. 1 gal. $ 50.00
MAGNOLIA 'GALAXY' - One of the finest magnolias to
grow throughout the country. We have sent plants to Southern
California as well as Chicago, IL. M. Galaxy is a National
Arboretum hybrid that we've been growing since 1973. The
upright growth is wonderful for a patio or as a street tree. The
purple flowers appear in mid-late March and literally cover the
EVERGREEN MAGNOLIAS
M. GRANDIFLORA -
'BRACKENS BROWN BEAUTY' - This clone
discovered in South Carolina by Ray Bracken has withstood
-20F. The plants we have seen are perhaps 20'x 8' and have
rich brown indumentum. We have wanted to list M. 'Brackens
Brown Beauty' but they were only available as 8'-10'
specimens, so we are excited to have 12"-18" one gallon size.
1 gal. $ 26.00
'D. D. BLANCHARD' has some of the best indumentum
under the leaves. When you get the young plant there won't be
any indumentum, but within a couple of years the deep brown
indumentum will show up. The flowers are the typical creamy
white in summer. 2 gal. $ 30.00
hybrids with golden yellow as the foliage emerges. We only
have a very few plants available. 2 gal. $ 75.00
MAGNOLIA 'HEAVEN SCENT' - One of D. Todd
Gresham's hybrids. We originally got our plant from Hillier's.
It's typical to have an American plant that must go to England
to be discovered. The light pink-purple flowers heavily cover
the plant in late March. 2 gal. $ 75.00
MAGNOLIA 'JOLLY ROGER' - Phil Savage's hybrid
of M. sargentiana robusta 'Blood Moon' crossed with M.
denudata. The original plant is growing in a church parking lot
in Detroit. The plant is very hardy and has large white flushed
pink flowers. I am honored to have this beautiful tree named
for me. M. 'Marjory Gossler' is M. 'Jolly Roger's' sister
seedling. 1 gal. $ 90.00
MAGNOLIA KOBUS 'BOREALIS' - This magnolia is
super hardy and actually loves the north. Don't try it in the
South or California. We remember a vine-like plant of M.
kobus in San Francisco. The flowers are pure white stars in
the spring. 1 gal. $ 30.00
MAGNOLIA KOSAR AND DE VOS HYBRIDS
that are deep pink purple on the outside of the tepals. The
sweetly scented flowers will cover this hardy hybrid each
spring. 1 gal. $ 28.00
MAGNOLIA LILIFLORA 'O'NEILL' - Perhaps the darkest
purple flowering magnolia. Our plant is 30+ years old. It is
12' tall and bushy all the way to the ground. The plant starts
flowering in mid March and continues heavily until late April.
After April 15, the plant blooms sporadically until fall.
1 gal. $ 30.00
MAGNOLIA LOEBNERI
M. l. 'BALLERINA' has proven very hardy. The flowers
are small, white and look like M. stellata 'Royal Star' . Rather
than being a shrub, 'Ballerina' becomes a 30 foot tree. Found
and named by Joe McDaniel.
2 gal. $ 35.00
M. l. 'LEONARD MESSEL' - Named at Nymans, this
fine magnolia is becoming better known and appreciated. The
pink flower buds open to light pink, star shaped flowers. Our
original (planted out in 1975) is now 25' X 12'.
2 gal. $ 22.00
MAGNOLIA 'MANCHU FAN' (M. lennei alba x veitchii) -
California. The white flowers are vase shaped and covered in
large numbers on a 30' tree. 2 gal. $ 75.00
MAGNOLIA 'MARGARET HELEN' is a newer
hybrid that has really rich pink-purple tepals that cover the
plant in March-April. Our plant was only 5' tall when it
bloomed. We can't wait until it gets larger.
1 gal. $ 70.00

MAGNOLIA 'MARJORY GOSSLER' - (denudata x
sargentiana 'Robusta Blood Moon'). We sent pollen to Phil
Savage (Detroit) and he hybridized and grew some plants to
tree size then sent us scion wood. The best of these plants Phil
named M. 'Marjory Gossler'. It has large white flowers with a
pink flush. The sister seedling has been hardy to -25-30° F. in
a parking lot. This is a very attractive large tree (30').
1 gal. $ 65.00
MAGNOLIA 'MISS HONEYBEE' has deep yellow flowers
in mid april just before the leaves unfurl. The flowers are
smaller than M. 'Elizabeth' but are deep yellow and have the
dark green foliage as a background.
2 gal. $ 75.00
MAGNOLIA 'PAUL COOK' (M. lennii (seedling) x
M. sprengeri diva) - A hybrid by Frank Galyon from
Knoxville, TN. The large flowers can be up to 12" across. The
tepals are very broad and are pink outside with white inside
the flowers. These huge flowers can be among the most
spectacular of any hybrid we grow.
1 gal. $ 80.00
MAGNOLIA 'PEACHY' - (M. acuminata 'Fertle Myrtle' X
M. sprengeri 'Diva'). This hardy mix of yellow and pink
late March - April so will be past most of the frost.
1 gal. $ 80.00
MAGNOLIA 'PEGASUS' (Formerly M. cylindrica)
Our tree is 40 years old and is 18' X 15'. The flowrs are white
with a slight pink flush. This hardy small tree will make a
beautiful show each spring.
1 gal. $ 60.00
MAGNOLIA 'PEPPERMINT STICK' - (M. liliflora
'Nigra' X M. veitchii). This was one of Gresham's original
named hybrids back in the early '60's. The light pink flowers
are very much like M. veitchii. For us, the original Gresham
hybrids are easier to grow and better garden plants.
2 gal. $ 60.00
MAGNOLIA 'PIET VAN VEEN' has rich pink flowers on
this M. campbellii from England.
1 gal. $ 70.00
MAGNOLIA SALICIFOLIA - Those listed have been
hardy to -12° F. here:
M. SALICIFOLIA 'ELSIE FRYE' - This M. salicifolia
was named after great plantswoman Elsie Frye from Seattle.
The white flowers are 5-6" across and have pink tipped
stamens in March on an upright, pyramidal tree.
1 gal. $ 60.00
5 gal. $100.00
M. SALICIFOLIA 'IUFER' (pronounced eu' - fer )
This cultivar comes from the Iufer Nursery in Salem, OR. We
bought many of our original magnolias in the 50's and 60's
from Ernie Iufer. This plant is a small tree 20'x12' after 30
years. They will have pure white flowers with pointed tepals.
This plant is very similar to M. s. 'Jermyns' and M. s. 'Elsie
Frye' but has darker red tips to the stamens. A wonderful small
tree for confined areas in the garden.
5 gal. $ 60.00
M. SALICIFOLIA 'MISS JACK' - A large 40' tree
with thousands of white flowers for a mass effect.
1 gal. $ 60.00
Open by appointment year round. 541-746-3922
20
MAGNOLIA SARGENTIANA ROBUSTA 'BLOOD
MOON' -Named in San Francisco for an opera. Much more
upright than M. sargentiana Robusta. Stunning deep pink
flowers are 12" across. 1 gal. $ 50.00
MAGNOLIA 'SAYONARA' - This Gresham hybrid has
large white goblets in March - April. This was one of the
early Greshams from the 1960's. Our plant is 30' tall and 20'
wide. 2 gal. $ 70.00
MAGNOLIA SIEBOLDII
M. SIEBOLDII - Our most recommended magnolia,
especially for the small garden. This excellent large shrubsmall
tree flowers late April - August 1. The flowers are ivory
white with red stamens. The pendant flowers are followed by
brilliant pink seed pods like little lanterns. Overall, one of the
most beautiful plants we grow. 1 gal. $ 22.00
M. SIEBOLDII 'COLOSSUS' - This form is a chemically
induced form of M. sieboldii. We first found plants spring of
'06. Many of the plants bloomed with much larger white
flowers than the species. The big difference we've seen so far
is the much larger oval leaves. We think M. sieboldii
'Colossus' will be a much larger shrub or small tree than M.
sieboldii. 2 gal. $ 75.00
MAGNOLIA SOULANGIANA
M. s. 'COATES' - We were thrilled to see two pictures of
our named hybrid in Jim Gardner's Magnolias. We named this
excellent plant for the Leonard Coates Nursery in San Jose,
CA. M. soulangiana 'Coates' is a seedling of M. s. 'Rustica
Rubra' but has a softer, more attractive purple flower. This is
an excellent magnolia for a number of different climates.
1 gal. $ 35.00
M. s. 'GRACE MC DADE' has gigantic pink flowers in
March. The flowers are so huge they look almost like you tied
fake flowers on. That's not anything against the flowers as
they are lovely. 1 gal. $ 30.00
MAGNOLIA 'STAR WARS' is an upright growing
magnolia to 30' X15'. The dark green foliage is nice all
summer, but it's the beautiful, pinky-purple, large flowers for
which it's grown. Hardy below 0° F. and will bloom as a 5-6'
plant. 1 gal. $ 50.00
2 gal. $ 60.00
MAGNOLIA STELLATA -
'CENTENNIAL' - Named for the Arnold Arboretum's
100th year and is reputed to be an improved 'Waterlily'. It is
grown as a seedling for M. stellata 'Rosea'. We are indebted
to the Arnold Arboretum who sent us our stock plant.
1 gal. $ 22.00
'CHRYSANTHUMUMIFLORA'. This small full
growing star magnolia has an upright form. The flowers are
soft pink and fully double. The tepals are smaller and lighter
color than M. s. 'Jane Platt'. M. s. 'Chrysanthimumiflora' is a
good choice for a small area. 2 gal. $ 50.00
'ROSEA JANE PLATT' - We named this excellent plant
for the late Jane Platt of Portland, OR. Mrs. Platt had grown
M. stellata 'Rosea' for years. We took cuttings and decided it
was a superior clone and asked Jane what to name it. She
jokingly said, "How about Jane Platt?" We did and
shocked her. The more we watch this plant the better we like
it. We think M. stellata 'Jane Platt' and Fothergilla gardenii
'Jane Platt' are fitting tributes to a great friend and gardener.
It has been given an Award of Merit by the Royal
Horticultural Society. 2 gal. $ 65.00

'ROYAL STAR' - A seedling selection of 'Waterlily'
having pure white tepals, pink buds, flowers to 6". Originated
in John Vermeulen's Nursery in New Jersey. This is one of
the hardiest M. stellatas. 1 gal. $ 18.00
'WATER LILY' - Light pink flowers opening to pure
white, many tepalled. 1 gal. $ 18.00
MAGNOLIA 'SUNDANCE' - (M. acuminata x M. denudata)
is a medium size tree with rich yellow flowers in April. This is
the same cross as M. Elizabeth but the flowers are brighter
yellow. 2 gal. $ 60.00
MAGNOLIA 'SUNSPIRE' is an upright grower to 30' X 10'
wide so it will make an excellent tree or patio tree. The
flowers are fairly small but are a nice yellow.
2 gal. $ 65.00
MAGNOLIA THOMPSONIANA - The first hybrid
magnolia. Thought to be a natural hybrid of M. tripetala and
M. virginiana. M. thompsoniana is a large deciduous shrub.
Our 50 year old tree is 20' X 20' and has 3 major stems. The
ivory flowers appear in May - June and are lemon scented.
Rarely offered in nurseries anywhere.
1 gal. $ 45.00
MAGNOLIA VIRGININIANA - var. AUSTRALIS
'HENRY HICKS'
Named by the great plantsman Joe McDaniel. M. v. 'Henry
Hicks' has been very hardy to -20°F and came from a seedling
from the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore, Philadelphia.
1 gal. $ 22.00
MAGNOLIA 'VULCAN' - An incredible glowing redpurple.
Our plant is blooming the correct color and size after
3-4 years. The first blooms will be an odd purple and we
worried it wasn't the correct plant, but it changed drastically
with age. Hardy to probably 0° F. The flowers can be up to
12" across in March. 2 gal. $ 65.00
MAGNOLIA 'WADA'S MEMORY' - We have a hard time
keeping up with demand for M. 'Wada's Memory'. M. 'Wada's
Memory' is a classy plant for all its merits. The young tree is
very upright with bronze new growth and dark green leaves
during summer. The white flowers appear in March by the
hundreds, if not thousands. The individual flower is not that
wonderful but with so many they make a grand display. M.
'Wada's Memory' is well adapted to both cold and warm areas.
1 gal. $ 35.00
MAGNOLIA WILSONII - We sold this beautiful tree for
years but we were buying cuttings from a very good
propagator. When their nursery closed we couldn't get anyone
to root them. We finally got seed and grew them. The white
flowers have red stamens in late April - June. The 6" flowers
are pendant like M. sieboldii but M. wilsonii becomes a 30'
tree. Don't recommend for the southeast or California, but in
the northwest M. wilsonii is one of the best summer bloomers.
1 gal. $ 30.00
MAGNOLIA 'WOODSMAN' - One of my least favorite
magnolias. The tree itself is very handsome. The flowers are
attractive in form, but the colors are wild pink, purple, green,
and brownish. Almost everyone else likes the colors, so make
your own decision. 1 gal. $ 50.00
MAGNOLIA 'YELLOW BIRD' has deep yellow small sized
(much smaller than M. 'Elizabeth', for example) flowers that
will appear just as the leaves are emerging. Makes an upright
tree to 30' to 35' tall with dark green foliage all summer.
1 gal. $ 50.00
21
MAGNOLIA 'YELLOW LANTERN' - A light colored
yellow magnolia. Probably closer to cream than true yellow,
but still a nice color. Very hardy and fast growing.
1 gal. $ 50.00
2 gall $ 65.00
Now--From Mahonia on
MAHONIA
M. AQUIFOLIUM 'APOLLO' - We hadn't been very
excited about our native Oregon grape until this spring. The
normal species of Mahonia aquifolium is an unruly spreader
with small cluster of bright yellow flowers. M. a 'Apollo' came
to us from Europe and only gets 18" tall and has very large
bright yellow flower clusters. This plant is a superior variety
well worth growing. 1 gal. $ 20.00
M. 'ARTHUR MENZIES' (Mahonia japonica x
lomarifolia). This hybrid is a great winter blooming shrub.
Our plants are 10-12' tall and are fully evergreen. Our plants
have survived 0° F. undamaged. The flower cluster is over
one foot across through late fall into winter. In spring it has
blue-purple fruit. Makes a beautiful complement to the
leaves. 2 gal. $ 32.00
M. 'CHARITY' - One of the M. media hybrids (japonica
x lomarifolia). One of our finest winter (actually year round)
shrubs. The evergreen foliage gets up to 18" long and 12"
wide. Our big plants of the media hybrids are 12' tall and
make an architectural form. The flowers begin to show color
(bright yellow) in late November and continue until February.
The fruit turns bluish-purple in late spring. When the birds
discover the fruit they immediately devour them.
1 gal. $ 30.00
M. 'UNDERWAY' -This M. media hybrid has more cut
leaves than some of the other forms. The flowers are the
typical bright yellow in mid winter. This hybrid mahonia is
much more difficult to find in the trade so we are happy to be
able to list it. 2 gal. $ 35.00
MELIANTHUS MAJOR 'ANTONOW'S BLUE' -
The honey shrub comes to us from South Africa. We have
grown seedlings in our garden for years. Even though we
thought
M. major was tender, our plant has gone down to 10°F. The
plant freezes to the ground but will resprout from the
rootstock. The leaves are pinnate and can get 18" long. Our
plants get larger each year- 4'-5' tall. The best foliage is in
October when there has been rain and the raindrops look like
mercury on the rich blue waxy leaves. M. major 'Antonow's
Blue' comes from the late Steve Antonow Garden in Seattle
and has lovely, rich blue leaves and sometimes (in a very mild
winter) will have odd purple flowers on 8' stems.
1 gal. $ 15.00
METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES
M. g. 'WAASLAND' -An almost columnar form of dawn
redwood. The leaves are light green all summer and turn
orange yellow in the fall. This deciduous tree will have dark,
almost black, stems in winter. 3 gal. $ 50.00

M . g. 'GOLD RUSH' - This dawn redwood is distinctive
because its needles are rich yellow all summer. This
deciduous tree was a sport from Metasequoia glyptostroboides
found in China during the 1940's. Can grow in moist soil and
makes a soft backdrop of yellow behind other conifers.
2 gal. $ 40.00
MICROBIOTA DECUSSATA - This Siberian conifer is a
chameleon. All spring through fall the low growing plant is
deep forest green and in late fall it changed to a purplish tan
that adds color all winter. M. decussata forms a low shrub
12"x36" and will grow in full sun or semi shade.
1 gal. $ 12.00
NELLIA AFFINIS is an American native that has purple
new leaves. The leaves are about 2" long and are deeply
serrated. This medium sized shrub has pink flowers 2" long in
late spring. This attractive shrub should be planted more often
in our gardens. (We need to get a plant into our own garden!)
2 gal. $ 22.00
NOTHOPANAX DELAVAYI - This semi hardy (15° F.)
evergreen has leaves that look somewhat like a maple.
Eventually getting 6-8' tall, the tropical looking leaves are a
background to the ivy-like white flowers.
1 gal. $ 20.00
NYSSA
N. SINENSIS - Finally we have a few plants of this
excellent plant. Nyssa sinensis is a Chinese relative to our
Southeast native tupelo. The small to medium sized tree is
adaptable and easy to grow. Fall color is stunning redorange.
This is a tree that is practically unknown in American
gardens, but should be grown more.
1 gal. $ 30.00
NYSSA SYLVATICA 'AUTUMN CASCADE' - The
black gum is a native of the Southeast U.S. The foliage is
glossy green during summer turning glorious red-purple in
fall. The plant is a weeping form, so can be grown in smaller
gardens. Very adaptable for wet areas as well as well
drained. 2 gal. $ 40.00
N. SYLVATICA 'RED RAGE' has the glossiest green
foliage of any of the tupelo cultivars we have seen. This plant
looks robustly healthy all summer and in October-November
will turn flaming red. 1 gal. $ 14.00
N. SYLVATICA 'RED WINE' - We have also seen this
plant listed as N. syl. 'Red Red Wine'. The dark green glossy
foliage turns brilliant dark red in fall. The southeastern U.S.
native will grow in wet soils as well as well drained soils.
2 gal. $ 40.00
N. SYLVATICA 'WILDFIRE' - has brilliant new
growth through the late spring and early summer. The older
leaves are deep green and will turn bright red in fall.
1 gal. $ 40.00
5 gal. $ 60.00
OMPHALOIDES 'CHERRY INGRAM' - Named for
English gardener Collingwood Ingram (of flowering cherry
fame). This low growing perennial gets up to 1' tall in bloom
with small brilliant blue flowers. In early March-April O.
'Cherry Ingram' is a perfect companion for Corylopsis
pauciflora. The plants will slowly grow into mats of flowers
and foliage. 1 gal. $ 10.00
OPHIOPOGON NIGRESCENS - Black Mondo Grass. The
black color is actually a sunburn of maximum proportions. If
put in full shade, it will be green. Ophiopogon nigrescens a
22
Ophiopogon nigrescens cont.
low growing, grassy looking plant. It is great with cyclamen or
snowdrops for a great contrast. 1 gal. $ 12.00
OSMANTHUS
O. BURKWOODII - A 5' shrub with small evergreen
foliage. The leaves are dark green and matte not shiny and the
white flowers will cover the plants in early spring. Osmanthus
burkwoodii is an easy grower in the Northwest, California and
the South. 1 gal. $ 12.00
O. FRAGRANS VAR. AURANTIACUS - This is an
upright growing evergreen shrub. Probably will grow to 15' in
time. The flower clusters are orange and are sweetly fragrant
during fall-winter. 1 gal. $ 28.00
O. HETEROPHYLLUS 'GOSHIKI' - This evergreen
shrub grows 4'-5' tall and wide in time. The foliage is holly
like and is marbled with yellow on a dark green background.
1 gal. $ 15.00
2 gal. $ 25.00
O. HETEROPHYLLUS 'KEMBU' has narrow leaves
with a broad, creamy band around the edge. This O.
heterophyllus has fewer thorns than most of the other
cultivars. Seems to be a slow grower.
1 gal. $ 22.00
like a small bamboo. We have seen 5-6' upright shrubs of O.
'Sasaba' at Brookside Gardens, MD and were very impressed.
The plants we are offering are 3 year olds and seem to take off
and grow faster after this age. 1 gal. $ 20.00
buds form. The buds will open to large bright yellow flowers.
This plant is an easy grower.
warm climates (California and the deep south) the petals will
be white. This is one of the loveliest mock oranges.
1 gal. $ 17.00
PHORMIUM - We have been able to grow the New Zealand
flaxes outside through 0-10° F. for years. We, in fact, just had
to remove a 10' P. 'Dark Delight' from the front of Eric and
Dawn's front window (bad placement). The plants are very
happy in full sun with lots of water. We see plants in
California with low water, but color seems to fade. Superb
container plants in areas that get colder. Just move into
unheated area that won't go below 15° F. for extended periods.
more like 6'. Are we too kind to the plant? Our plant blooms
only sporadically each spring! Makes an attractive sort of
bonsai effect as it ages. 1 gal. $ 16.00
thought phillodendron, not oak. Just this summer we have
seen plants in several gardens in the Northwest.
great native plants that had to go to Europe to be named. We
saw Ribes sanguinium all over southern England and western
France several years ago. 1 gal. $ 18.00
R. SANGUINEUM 'STRYBING PINK' - From Strybing
Arboretum, San Francisco, comes this soft pink flowering
current. As western American natives we fail to realize how
great these plants are. In Europe we have seen the different
cultivars all over. 1 gal. $ 18.00
R. SANGUINEUM 'VARIEGATA' - This current has a
splashed cream variegation on a dark green leaf. The flowers
are mid pink. LIMITED 1 gal. $ 22.00
26
ROBINIA PSEUDOACACIA 'FRISIA' - The golden leafed
black locust has brilliant yellow foliage all summer with no
green at the center of the tree. This year we have 1-2 foot
plants which will be great to ship. R. 'Frisia' grows 4-6 feet
per year. 1 gal. $ 24.00
ROMNEYA COULTERI - Matilija Poppy or Fried
Egg Plant. This perennial will get 4'-6' tall and if happy will
form quite a thicket in time. Even though it is from dry areas
in California, we grow our plant in full sun, good drainage
with lots of water. We have seen Romneya growing in a ditch
covered in water during winter. The flowers are 6" across with
white crepe paper petal. The stamens are egg yolk color.
1 gal. $ 14.00
ROSA
R. GLAUCA - The dusty purple gray foliage makes a
lovely background for many perennials. The plant is a
graceful grower and needs to be pruned regularly (once a year)
to keep it bushy. The single flowers are small and deep pink.
In late summer the hips turn a subtle orange to prolong the
season. 1 gal. $ 18.00
R. POMIFERA - The apple rose has tiny 1" pink flowers
in May. If you saw the flowers you would dig up the plant and
throw it away. The great thing are the hips that turn a burnt
orange in late Aug.-Sept. The 1" fruit are truly beautiful when
they cover the upright 6'-8' shrub. We don't spray and haven't
seen any pests on R. pomifera. 2 gal. $ 22.00
R. SERICEA PTERACANTHA - This rose is a show
stopper with the large red thorns. We cut our plants down to
one foot each March. The new growth has very large red
thorns. With this approach there will be no flowers but who
cares with those stunning thorns. 1 gal. $ 18.00
SALIX
S. ALBA 'SERICEA' - This willow is an excellent
alternative to Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'. We haven't seen a
good specimen of the weeping pear. The pear has thorns,
smelly flowers and an ugly form. The semi weeping willow
has glorious gray leaves up to 6" long and 1/2" wide. We use
it as a cut back plant to give real silver accent.
1 gal. $ 14.00
S. 'CHERMESINA' - Brilliant orange, red and yellow
stems from early fall until it leafs out in spring. This willow is
exceptionally hardy and fast growing. We prune to 3' each
spring just before bud break and it forms a 10' stunner all
winter. . 1 gal. $ 14.00
S. INTEGRA 'HAKURO - NISHIKI' - The dappled
willow has narrow leaves that are light green spotted with
white and pink. The overall effect is of white through the
summer. This is an easy perennial (a shrub we cut down each
spring) for the wet or well drained garden.
1 gal. $ 15.00
S. IRRORATA 'ROSEMARY VEREY' - A white
stemmed (gray) willow with narrow leaves. Originally from
Rosemary Verey's garden in England. The winter stems
almost glow against our bark covered soil. Can take wet
(boggy) or well drained soil. 1 gal. $ 18.00
S. LANATA - We have seen this fabulous willow in
England and we were very attracted by its felted gray leaves.
The 3-4' plant has small (1") gray leaves so the plant looks
grayish white from a distance. Can grow in moist soil or well
drained soil. The plants are small but well worth the price.
1 gal. $ 18.00

S. YEZOALPINA - A dwarf willow that only gets
6-12 inches tall, but can grow 6 feet across. The foliage is
large, oval-shaped and dark green, with heavy veins. A good
moderate ground cover. Can grow in hot sun here.
1 gal. $ 14.00
SAMBUCUS -
S. 'BLACK BEAUTY' - The leaves appear in spring and
are a nice purple. As the summer goes on the large foliage
turns almost black. We have seen a 10' plant in Portland that
is really beautiful with its dark foliage and light pink flowers.
Would be great paired with pink and white flowers.
1 gal. $ 15.00
S. 'BLACK LACE' -We have had S. 'Black Beauty' for
several years and now we have a cut leafed form with dark
purple leaves. This shrub has an arching form with the dark
foliage and handsome pink flowers in late spring.
1 gal. $ 15.00
S. NIGRA PULVERULENTA - This green foliaged
elderberry has white variegation that can totally engulf the
leaves. The overall effect is of a white foliaged plant. There
are no flowers to speak of. 1 gal. $15.00
SARCOCOCCA HOOKERIANA 'HUMILUS' - We
always get calls for this shrubby ground cover. It is very nice
year round with its narrow dark green leaves. But in the
winter the 12-18" creeping shrub has small white flowers and
shiny black fruit. The flowers are small but have a powerfully
strong scent. 1 gal. $ 12.00
3 for $ 30.00
SCHIZOPHRAGMA -
S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'BROOKSIDE LITTLE
LEAF' - (Little leaf when juvenile) We saw this plant at
Brookside one fall climbing at least 20' up a tree with large
leaves. All of the other plants we have seen have tiny leaves.
Most of these plants have 1/2" leaves. Try this shade lover on
a tree or wall. 1 gal. $ 14.00
S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'JANE PLATT' - See
Hydrangea 'Jane Platt'.
S. 'MOOONLIGHT' is a climbing hydrangea relative
from Japan. The silver leaves have dark green veining making
a nice combination. Our plant is 20' tall after 20' years and
rarely blooms (white lacecap.) 1 gal. $ 18.00
S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'ROSEUM' has soft pink sterile
flowers in clusters up to 8" across. This handsome climber has
dark green foliage which makes a perfect background for the
lacecap flowers. 1 gal. $ 18.00
S. INTEGRIFOLIUM VAR. 'FAURIEI' - This
schizophragma has much larger foliage and flowers than
S. hydrangeoides. The large, dark green leaves are very handsome
all summer and turn yellow in fall. The flower heads get
to 10" across and have white, sterile flowers. This central
Chinese species is supposed to grow up cliffs in its native
habitat. 1 gal. $ 22.00
SCHIZOSTYLIS
S. 'MRS. HAGGARTY' - We have had this schizostylis
since the early 1960's and this South African has survived
-12° F. The pink flowers are borne on 18" stalks late August-
October. 1 gal. $ 8.00
27
S. 'OREGON SUNSET' - We are thrilled with our
named variety. It is in England and we regularly see
S. 'Oregon Sunset' in lists and nurseries throughout the west.
Bright red flowers on a vigorous plant.
1 gal. $ 8.00
S. PALLADIFLORA - This light pink (almost white)
Kaffir lily makes a nice show in front of Callicarpa
'Profusion'. 1 gal. $ 8.00
S. 'SUNRISE' -Has bright pink flowers on 18" stems late
August - November. 1 gal. $ 8.00
S. 'VISCOUNTESS BYNG' - The year's last schizostylis
to bloom in late September, but most falls it will bloom past
Thanksgiving. S. 'Viscountess Byng' has narrow, light pink
petals. 1 gal. $ 8.00
SEQUOIA
S. SEMPERVIRENS 'HENDERSON BLUE' - Could
be grown as a tree but with this redwood we grow then as a
shrubby arching plant. The rich blue flat needles are wonderful
for the shrub garden. We prune upright growing branches 2
times per year to keep the plant shrubby.
1 gal. $ 18.00
SOLANUM GLASNEVIN - We tried this potato vine
several times in various parts of our garden. The plants
survived, not thrived. We finally got smarter and put a plant
on a trellis in full sun surrounded by asphalt. WOW ! What
has happened in several years is amazing. We have small blue
flowers all summer on a vigorous vine. The surprising thing is
the trunk has a 3" caliper and we must prune hard each spring
to control the plant. It doesn't run, but is very happy with the
glossy foliage and blue flowers. 1 gal. $ 12.00
SPIRAEA J 'OGON' - Has golden foliage almost conifer
like. The leaves are 2" long and 1/2" wide. The soft golden
color holds on a good part of the summer then fades to green.
The fall color is bright yellow. Flowers are small white
clusters. 1 gal. $ 14.00
STACHYURUS
S. 'MAGPIE' - Next year.
S. SALICIFOLIUS - We look at his plant strictly for its
narrow (long leaves). Our plant in the garden has 6" long and
1/2" wide leaves on an irregular open plant. The flowers are
four inch spikes of yellow in early spring.
1 gal. $ 30.00
STEWARTIA -
S. KOREANA - We never seem to have enough of this
superb tree. Our big 30' specimen has deep green heavily
veined leaves all summer. In fall the leaves turn brilliant
scarlet. The flowers are 2" across and have yellow stamens.
S. koreana blooms for at least a month during June and July.
The bark exfoliates in beautiful patches. Stewartia Koreana is
a wonderful tree year round, is hardy and pest and disease
resistant. 2 gal. $ 32.00
S. MONADELPHA -One of the most beautiful trees in our
garden. S. monodelpha has incredible flaking, tan, orange
bark. The dark green foliage turns brilliant orange, purple,
red. Each plant of S. monadelpha has a different fall color.
The flowers are small, white and camellia looking.
1 gal. $ 22.00
2 gal. $ 35.00

S. PSEUDOCAMELLIA - This stewartia is probably the
finest for general cultivation. The bark flakes off like a
sycamore and has patches of creamy gray, brown, and orange.
The flowers are white and have orange stamens. The green
foliage turns flaming crimson and yellow in fall This is a
small 20'-40' tree of the greatest qualities.
1 gal. $ 22.00
S. ROSTRATA - An exceedingly rare stewartia from
China. The dark green leaves are an excellent backdrop for
the lovely white flower buds ! The buds have a deep maroon
purple bract to enclose the bud and flower. The white flowers
have orange stamens. After the flowers drop in June-July the
bracts are beautiful the rest of summer. Fall foliage color will
be reds, yellows and purples. 2 gal. $ 22.00
S. SINENSIS - This tree is the smallest of the Asian
stewartias. The flowers are 1" across in June-July. The
bronzy new growth turns green all summer then the most
brilliant glowing red in fall. The plant can practically be seen
in the dark it's so bright. 1 gal $ 22.00
2 gal. $ 30.00
STYRAX
S. 'CARILLON' - "Cousin It". That's the nickname
S. 'Carillon' has gotten here. The main trunk is irregular and
will lose and regain the central leader over time. The dark
green foliage cascades all summer. In the fall the foliage
turns yellow. The flowers are small white stars. The foliage is
so full that the trunks can't be seen, hence its nickname,
"Cousin It." LIMITED 2 gal. $ 45.00
S. JAPONICA 'EMERALD PAGODA' - We first saw
this plant at NCSU a year after J.C. Raulston had gone to
Korea. (1985?). The original and only graft was 6 inches tall
and well hidden in the greenhouse. Two years later I asked
J.C. if any were available. Yes, 6 inch plants or a 3-4 foot
specimen. We found a large box and brought the three to four
foot plant home. The first 2 years the leaves were small then
it got established. The leaves are double the size and the
flowers are at least twice the size as S. japonica. It looks
tropical in its lushness. Again, "Thank you," to J.C.
1 gal. $ 28.00
5 gal. $ 55.00
S. JAPONICA 'FRAGRANT FOUNTAIN' P.P.A.F. We
have had Styrax jap. 'Carillon' for many years and it's a
beautiful small tree. The only problem is our 30 year old plant
is 12' X 12' so it takes up a lot of room in a small garden,
however beautiful it is. We found out about a new weeping
Styrax japonica several years ago discovered by an Oregon
nurseryman who grows thousands of seedlings. Occasionally
a new interesting plant pops up. This excellent plant will grow
upright with a terminal leader. All the stems are strongly
weeping. We have seen trees that are less the 2' wide. The
flowers are the typical white stars in May and June. We only
have a small supply available, so that's the reason for the high
price. Be the first in the world to have this fine selection.
1 gal. $ 80.00
S. JAPONICA 'FROSTED EMERALD' -P.P.A.F - is
from the same nurseryman with an excellent eye for new
plants. Foliage is what it's all about! The foliage on this
styrax is deep green with bright splashes of creamy white.
We have seen plants of Styrax 'Frosted Emerald' in full sun
that have lovely splashes of white on the leaf. In semi shade
the plant will be almost totally creamy white. We would
recommend that it is grown with some afternoon shade.
One per customer 1 gal. $ 80.00
28
SYCOPSIS SINENSIS - An evergreen witchazel relative
from China that will grow to 20'. The narrow deep green
leaves cover the plant making it an excellent screening plant
The small yellow puffs of flowers appear in March. The
upright shrub will grow in full fun or semi-shade.
1 gal. $ 18.00
SYRINGA
S. 'LACINIATA' - The lace leaf lilac has small leaves
that are deeply cut. This easy growing pretty plant is very
adaptable. The flowers are light lavender and are an added
bonus to the pretty foliage. 1 gal. $ 14.00
S. 'JOSEE'- Introduced by Minier Nursery, France in
the 1970's, this hybrid of S. patula x macrophylla x meyeri
will bloom for an exceedingly long time in spring. The light
purple flowers have small individual flowers but are carried in
great numbers. S. 'Josee' will grow to 4'-6' tall.
1 gal. $ 14.00
TAXUS 'BEANPOLE' - J ust as the name says, this yew is a
beanpole narrow (8'x1'). The deep green foliage will be a
wonderful contrast to low growing shrubs or perennials.
1 gal. $ 22.00
TRACHELOSPERMUM JASMINOIDES ORIDO
NISHIKI - The star jasmine is a standard in warm climate
areas and over the last 15-20 years is seen regularly in the
Willamette Valley. The species has deep green leaves and
white star shaped very fragrant flowers. This cultivar has deep
golden leaves with deep green margins. The new growth is
peachy-orange and the plant will make quite a statement in
your garden.
LIMITED 1 gal. $ 20.00
TRACHYCARPUS
T. FORTUNEI - The windmill palm is one of the hardiest
palms we can grow. The parent plant went through -12° F.
and 0° F. two times. A superb palm from China to give that
tropical touch we saw in Tom Hobbs glorious garden in
Vancouver, BC, where he has used several palms to frame the
house and view. Also, makes a fine container specimen.
1 gal. $ 15.00
2 gal. $ 40.00
T. WAGNERIENSIS - We have been told this palm is
hardier than T. fortunei so will probably survive 0° F. The
leaves are smaller than T. fortunei but are still lovely. Some
gardeners say that windmill palms don't fit our mixed
woodland gardens but both these palms are native to the same
areas our rhododendron and magnolias are found so we think
they fit beautifully while also adding the tropical look. Plants
are small but at a reasonable price for this rare plant. Thanks
to Roger Warner for the seed! 1 gal. $ 15.00
TRICYRTIS
T. MACRANTHOPSIS - Very limited. This toad lily
will form an arching perennial for the woodland garden. The
foliage is lovely, let alone the beautiful flowers in late August-
September. Small 1 gal. $ 10.00
TRILLIUM RIVALE - We want to thank Glenn Withy
and Charles Price for the original seedlings of T. rivale. This
southern Oregon native will get 6" tall and carry white flowers
spotted with pink in early spring. T. rivale will seed and make
glorious carpets of bloom. 2 1/4"pot $ 6.50

TROCHODENDRON ARALLOIDES - The Japanese
Wheel Tree. Trochodendron is a small evergreen tree of
subtle beauty. The bronze new growth expands as a single
shoot then during the growth season it branches. (It doesn't
stop growing, but essentially pinches itself.) The largest
plants we've seen are 25-30 feet tall and grow in a layered
form. Flower clusters are chartreuse and the seed pods turn
red in late summer. Slow growing and difficult to propagate.
1 gal. $ 25.00
TROPAEOLUM POLYPHYLLUM is a perennial
nasturtium from southern Chile. The foliage is gray blue
green in spring-early summer. The stems are only 18" long
and grow quickly in spring, but will totally disappear by early
July. The flowers are golden yellow and look like small
nasturtium flowers.. Tropaeolum polyhyllum is
extraordinarily difficult to find in gardens let alone nurseries.
We don't have a large supply but want to make the plant
available. T. polyphyllum needs well drained gravely soil and
with us seems to grow best scrambling through a small shrub.
Blooming size tuber $ 25.00
TSUGA MERTENSIANA is our mountain hemlock from
high in the Cascade mountains. We don't see this plant until
about 6000'. The mountain hemlock will be one of the last
windblown trees at the tree line.
The irregular stems are covered with deeep green
needles. This plant is a slow grower and makes a superb
specimen plant or grouping in our vallley gardens. We have
had a plant for 50 years and it's 30' X 8' and makes a stunning
focal point. The plants listed are bushy full small specimens.
2 gal. $ 35.00
6 gal. $ 55.00
VACCINIUM -BLUEBERRIES
For years we have grown the superb Vaccinium
'Sunshine Blue' for its blue foliage all spring-fall. In late fall
(December) the orange, red and yellow fall color appears.
During summer we get a month and a half of sweet fruit. V.
'Sunshine Blue' is cold hardy as well as being able to fruit in
southern California.
If you only have room for one blueberry,
V. 'Sunshine Blue' should be the one. But if you have more
room we are listing some blueberries for their fruit. These
plants all have beautiful fall color as well as delicious fruit that
is good for you (antioxidants and all that good stuff) They just
taste good!
We have chosen the 5 varieties of fruiting shrubs for
their adaptability to different parts of the country, excellent
fruit over a long period of time and superb fall color. These
plants can be purchased individually or as a group. You can
expect to enjoy 2 months of fruit every summer by ordering
the 5 varietes
5 different varieties 1 gal. $ 65.00
V. 'BLUE CROP' is supposedly the most widely
planted variety because of its large crops of fruit during the
midseason. V. 'Blue Crop' is a 4'-6' shrub that is healthy and
adaptable over a wide range of the country.
1 gal. $ 15.00
V. 'CHANDLER' is the largest blueberry in the world
with a long fruiting season of up to 6 weeks. This shrub is
slightly spreading up to 7' so it makes an easy plant to pick
fruit form. The fruit is large and has a very nice flavor.
1 gal. $ 15.00
29
V. 'LEGACY 'is a USDA release that will hold its
leaves through most mild winters. In the east the foliage will
turn crimson red and here in the west it will be more mottled
with yellow orange and red. In the trials by the USDA V.
'Legacy' was considered to be one of the best flavored
blueberries. The 4'-6' shrub is a vigorous grower that will have
heavy crops of fruit. 1 gal. $ 15.00
V. PATRIOT' is a very cold tolerant shrub that will
grow 3'-4' tall making a handsome full shrub. Will grow better
in poorer drainage than other cultivars. This nice shrub will
provide a good crop of tangy fruit. 1 gal. $ 15.00
V. 'SUNSHINE BLUE' - This blueberry has small, rich
blue foliage all summer. The plant only gets 3-4 feet tall.
Will grow in full sun or semi-shade. We were perhaps the
first retail mail order offering V. 'Sunshine Blue' in the U.S.
These plants are of medium size, sweet tasting blueberries.
The fruit is produced over an extended period in late July-
August. 1 gal. $ 15.00
V. GLAUCO ALBUM - The more visitors see this plant
the more they want it. Our 10 year old plants are 12-18 inches
tall and are 24 inches across. Oval, dark green leaves have
blue indumentum (the correct term?) underneath the leaves.
Flowers, soft pink in small clusters---- no fruit so far.
V. 'CAYUGA' - V. carlesii X V. x carlcephalum
(V. carlessii x macrocephalum). This compact plant comes
from Don Egolf's National Arboretum work. Flowers pink
turning white. Large numbers of flowers produced on a bushy
plant. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. CONOY - This National Arboretum hybrid gets to
be a handsome 2-3' shrub. Whenever we see the plant in a
garden, we also always like the look. We finally put out a
plant in our garden 3 years ago. Flowers are white and are
cinnamon scented. 1 gal. $ 16.00
brilliant red. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. DILATATUM 'MICHAEL DODGE' - We first saw
this plant in several gardens along the Hudson River and
wanted it immediately. Not so easy to find. The normal V.
dilatatum has red fruit, but dilitatum 'Michael Dodge' has
golden yellow clusters. This is a truly gorgeous shrub for the
fall garden. Grow with V. 'Cardinal Candy' for a heavy fruit
set. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. FARRERI - This pink viburnum blooms for us in
deciduous shrub has medium green leaves that have splashes
of creamy white-yellow during early summer. By late summer
the foliage is mostly just medium green. Even though the
variegation doesn't last all summer this is still a nice shrub.
2 gal. $ 22.00
V. 'MARY MILTON' is supposed to be darker pink than
V. 'Pink Sensation.' The snowball flowers appear in late May-
June and really display beautifully with dark new foliage.
1 gal. $ 18.00
V. OPULUS 'AUREA' - Has golden foliage during spring
and early summer. In late summer it turns to light green then
in fall V. opelus 'Aurea' will change to golden yellow with
yellow fruit in the early fall. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. ODORTISSIMUM AWABUKI - is a large shrub 18'-
20' tall and 8' wide. This glossy foliaged evergreen will make
an excellent screen at the back of the border. The fruit will
turn black in the fall. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. 'PINK SENSATION'- We have grown this gorgeous
viburnum for 20+years and are always sold out. The deep
green leaves are purple when they leaf out in spring until July.
Our original plant came from our friend, the late Connie
Hanson from Lincoln City, OR. Our large plant is 10'x10' and
has literally hundreds of 2"-3" sterile snowbells that are a
beautiful pink. We have a hard time keeping up with the
demand so order early and often! 1 gal. $ 20.00
V. PRAGENSE 'DECKER' -This evergreen viburnum
has glossy dark green leaves. The flowers are white with
black fruit in fall. A good plant for a screen or background.
1 gal $ 18.00
V. PROPINQUIM - This glossy foliaged evergreen makes
a beautiful mound 4-5' tall. The leaves are narrow and are
very deep green. Flowers are white followed by black fruit in
fall. 1 gal. $ 15.00
V. 'SUMMER SNOWFLAKE' - Not as small as we were
told in the beginning, but still a much smaller more
controllable plant than V. tomentosum 'Plicatum'. Flowers
heavily in late April-May then sporadically until hard freezes.
1 gal. $ 15.00
V. TOMENTOSUM 'FIREWORKS' - is a David
Leach (of Rhododendron fame) hybrid. The fertile flowers are
red-purple and the sterile flowers are snow white. The growth
is full and the plant will get 6'-8' tall.
1 gal. $ 15.00
30
V. TOMENTOSUM 'IGLOO' - This plant from
Winterthur makes a dome shape up to 5' tall. The white
flowers cover the plant clear to the ground in May.
2 gal. $ 15.00
V. TOMENTOSUM 'MOLLY SHROEDER' - Comes to
us from New Zealand. Similar to V. 'Pink Beauty' but holds
its pink color longer. V. 'Molly Shroeder' is consistently
darker pink further south or under polyethylene in our
shadehouses. 1 gal. $16.00
V. TRILOBUM 'RED WING' - has beautiful purplered
new growth in spring. By fall the leaves will turn wine red
. The flowers will appear in May and will be followed by long
lasting red fruit. 1 gal. $ 16.00
V. 'WATANABE' - This excellent upright shrub can get
12'x8' wide in 30 years. We were initially told 4'-5' Ha-ha! V.
'Wanatabe' has white flowers at Mother's Day-time, covering
the plant. As the summer goes on the flowers will appear
sporadically until hard freeze. 1 gal. $ 16.00
VITIS - All grapes (Vitis) cannot be shipped to
California.
V. DAVIDII . The only grape with thorns (that we know).
The soft barbs cover the stems of this large grower. The
foliage can be up to 18" across. Since these are grafted, we
haven't ever had fruit. We assume they need a pollinizer.
1 gal. $ 17.00
V. COIGNETIAE - A large grape that has glorious fall
colors. The large leaves are heavily veined dark green. In fall
the foliage turns rich reds, purples, oranges, and yellow.
Should be grown on a heavy trellis.
1 gal. $ 17.00
WEIGELA
W. 'GHOST' (W. f. Carlton ppaf) is a low grower
late summer. 1 gal. $ 12.00
W. 'LOOYMANSII AUREA' - A brilliant yellow
foliage covers this plant spring to fall. The flowers are soft
pink which makes a nice compliment. Needs afternoon shade.
2 gal. $ 22.00
W. MIDDENDORFIANA - This irregular grower will
get to 5' tall and have golden yellow flowers in early summer.
W. 'RED PRINCE' - This weigela has the richest red
flowers imaginable. W. 'Red Prince' has dark green leaves and
in late April the red flowers practically glow. Too bad this
plant doesn't bloom at Christmas.
1 gal. $ 14.00
WISTERIA FRUTESCENS 'AMETHYST FALLS' -
Whenever we see wisterias, we are most attracted to this plant.
This small (read safer, not aggressive) plant has lavenderpurple
flowers 6-8" long that bloom early summer then
sporadically through the rest of the summer.
1 gal. $ 22.00

YUCCA
Y. 'COLOR GUARD' - This yucca has a broad yellow
center to the leaf. The margin is dark green so the foliage
effect is overall golden from a distance. This easy grower is
hardy in well drained full sun. 1 gal. $ 12.00
Y. LINEARIFOLIA can get to 5' tall with very narrow
Long leaves creating a striking plant for the well drained
sharp drainage. Supposedly a very rare plant so we hope we
have enough. 1 gal $ 14.00
Y. 'NANA' - A very slow growing yucca for the rock
garden or container. Foliage is dark green
TERMS
This catalog applies to Fall 2008, and Spring 2009, shipping:
PLEASE ORDER FROM THE CURRENT CATALOG ONLY. Customers will
automatically receive our new catalog each fall. Since certain varieties are often in limited supply,
customers find that by placing their order in the fall for fall or spring shipping we can better ensure
availability and choice of size. Please offer suggested substitutes, though we don't substitute unless
instructed.
PLANTS ARE TAGGED AS ORDERS ARE RECEIVED, therefore earliest orders receive
first choice of plants..............First come, first served.
PAYMENT WITH ORDER PLEASE... WE NOW ACCEPT VISA OR MASTERCARD, and
do not charge the card until the time of the shipment.
We ship earth balls reduced to a minimum in a plastic bag. We do not practice bare root
shipping due to severe shock. We will substitute smaller sizes of your suggested substitutes if
necessary and refund balance.
Shipments are made when plants are dormant from October to March (primarily October 15 to
December 15 and February 15 to early May). We refuse to ship if we deem soft growth too advanced
for sustained crated containment and refund customer's money. We advise midwestern and eastern
customers who receive plants in Spring in dormant condition, and then unpack and hold plants in lighted
basement, garage, or cool greenhouse until danger of severe frost is past.
Shipping: We ask the customer to state choice of carrier, but be receptive to alternative
suggestions. Plants become the property of the customer upon delivery to the transportation company
and we cannot be responsible for loss, damage, or delay. Claims for damage in transit should be made
to the carrier (not the driver). Save all packing materials and contents. Please include street address,
telephone number, and any other pertinent information to aid in delivery.
REGARDING PACKING AND SHIPPING CHARGES:
In the effort to simplify the terms of shipping, 20% for shipments west of the Mississippi River -
or 30% east of the Mississippi River, which will include the packing and prepaid ground UPS or Parcel
Post. This cost (20% or 30% has been reviewed and turns out to be almost exactly the price we charged
in the past for packing and ground shipping). If you wish 2nd day air UPS, 3rd day select UPS, we
will charge 10% packing plus shipping at cost. Due to increased boxing and shipping costs, minimum
packing and shipping is $10.00. Re: 2nd Day UPS, We would like people to know that 2nd day
UPS should only be used when absolutely necessary. 3rd Day Select UPS is drastically less money and
only involves one more day which will not noticably affect the plants. Unless otherwise requested, we
send plants by Regular ground UPS which sometimes takes 10 days to the east coast. Therefore we
often recommend 3rd day UPS, a little more expensive, but a saving in transit time.
Plants are guaranteed true to name and are carefully selected quality plants. Our plants are
regularly inspected by the Oregon Agriculture Department. Since we cannot control planting or
growing conditions after shipment, we cannot be responsible for loss.
We can supply a wholesale catalog upon request to nurseries and landscapers.
Plants, pricing and shipping .....
We really care about our plants, customers, and pricing and, therefore, we address
these issues here:
In general, 1 gallon plants are 6"-18", 2 gallon plants are 18"-24", and 3 gallon
plants are 24"-36". Most of our plants are grafted or cutting grown from our own stock
plants, so we know the correct variety. We also feel that it is better to have cultivars or
known varieties than seedlings. The plants we list have been at the nursery for a least one
season, and our catalog is based on plants in stock at press time. We list plants only
when we have at least 10 of a variety and try to indicate when so few are available.
From our garden and others we choose only the finest most adaptable plants. Since
we are small and don't have a large staff, we can't handle having thousands of varieties of
plants for sale. We put our plants through an evaluation process in our garden. So when
you make a choice you know we have already grown that plant in our own garden and
found it has more beautiful flowers, foliage, fruit, hardiness, etc. than other varieties we
have tried.
As to price, a difficult decision, we try to be fair so not just the wealthy can afford
the plants (we are collectors, too). In many cases there are no other sources to compare
cost, so difficulty in acquisition, propagation, container growing, as well as other nursery
costs must come into play.
Shipping times are between October and December and again February into early
May while the plants are in dormant state. We are always watching the weather across
the country to try to ship the orders so they arrive in good condition. We do not bare root
plants, but do reduce the earth ball to lighten the ship weight while still keeping soil with
the roots. Plants are tied into plastic bags, then tied into cardboard cartons, thus greatly
limiting loss. We'll try to meet your shipping date request, but our schedules, weather,
etc. may affect our ability to do this. In spring, please be patient as we get snowed under
with orders so sometimes it takes until mid May to catch up with the orders. We reserve
the plants ordered and charge credit cards when the plants are shipped, as we are able to
reconcile plants, packing, and shipping charges.
If we have not answered some of your questions, feel free to call.
Re: Your want lists - Often there are plant varieties available in numbers too
few to list here. We invite inquiries and try to advise where plants are
available, if not here.
