B. REPLICATA - People always see this barberry and ask<br />

what it is and want it. Berberis replicata has narrow dark<br />

evergreen foliage. The new foliage is rich purple as a<br />

highlight all summer over the green mature leaves. Our plant<br />

is 8 X 9' after 20 years and has been hardy to 0° F. and a flood<br />

3' in 1996. (A really tough plant). 1 gal. $ 12.00<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'AUREA NANA' - This barbery has<br />

small golden yellow leaves all spring and summer. Plants will<br />

get to 2' tall and make a rounded mound of foliage.<br />

B. thunbergii 'Aurea Nana' likes some afternoon shade to keep<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'BAGATELLE' - A purple cushion of<br />

foliage. The foliage is bright purple and turns flaming scarlet<br />

in fall. The plant will get 2' X 2' in many years. B. 'Bagatelle'<br />

is one of the smallest of the barberries. Takes bright full sun.<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'BURGUNDY CAROUSEL' -<br />

(Berberis Baitone). A low mounded shrub with uniform<br />

growth. B. 'Burgundy 'Carousel' is larger and richer purple red<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'CONCORDE' - This dwarf barberry<br />

has velvety rich purple foliage all summer. The plant will get<br />

to perhaps 2' tall and could be used as a low hedge or in a rock<br />

garden for a splash of purple. Found and named by Wavecrest<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'HELMOND PILLAR' -The European<br />

introduction is strictly columnar 2' X 6' tall. Makes a great<br />

focal point in the perennial border or rock garden with its dark<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'LIME GLOW' - A golden version of<br />

B. 'Rose Glow'. B. 'Lime Glow' has splashed golden leaves<br />

on a 3' shrub. Has attractive fall color as well as all spring<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'RED CHIEF' - This 6-7' barberry has<br />

glossy deep maroon leaves. Our plant has rich shiny foliage<br />

on its own or can be beautifully integrated into a perennial<br />

B. THUNBERGII 'ROYAL CLOAK' -This purple<br />

leafed large plant grows up to 8' tall. The leaves are deep dark<br />

purple and at a distance look like Cotinus 'Royal Purple'.<br />

B. 'WALLICH'S PURPLE' has purple new growth that<br />

highlights this dark evergreen plant. We can't find much<br />

information but believe B. 'Wallichs Purple' will get to 2' tall.<br />

This is one of the most beautiful of the evergreen low growing<br />

B. 'WILSONI ACE'. Not as small as we originally read.<br />

This 3-5' shrub is very distinctive with its small gray green<br />

leaves. In fall the gray leaves will turn all shades of pink,<br />

yellow and red. This plant looks great as a backdrop for<br />

BERGENIA 'APPLE BLOSSOM' - This glossy evergreen<br />

perennial has white and pink flowers in early spring. Bergenia<br />

'Apple Blossom' will slowly spread into beautiful clumps.<br />

Many bergenias can be used as borders in gravel gardens such<br />

as Beth Chatto's dry garden. 1 gal. $ 14.00<br />

BRUNNERA<br />

B. 'JACK FROST' - The Siberian bugloss is a perennial<br />

with bright blue forget-me-not flowers in the spring. The<br />

flowers would make this plant worth growing alone, but B.<br />

'Jack Frost' also has silver heart shaped leaves with deep green<br />

veining. All spring the flowers are nice. When they are<br />

finished, the foliage carries on the beauty until fall.<br />

B. 'LOOKING GLASS' has heart shaped leaves that are<br />

silver all seasons. The leaves grow on a mounding perennial<br />

that does beautifully in the shaded garden. The tiny sprays of<br />

blue flowers appear in early spring.<br />

BUXUS<br />

B. 'GRAHAM BLANDY' - This columnar boxwood gets<br />

up to 8' tall and 2' wide. Our biggest plant is 5' x 1' so makes a<br />

great focal point for this perennial border or shaded border.<br />

Needs some afternoon shade. 1 gal. $ 12.00<br />

B. 'JOHN BALDWIN' - is a slow growing hardy<br />

boxwood that we have grown for years in our garden. Our<br />

plant is 18" tall after 15 years. The plant is as upright<br />

pyramidal form. The leaves are about 1/2 the size of B<br />

sempervirens. B. 'John Baldwin' would make a small formal<br />

hedge or a small specimen for the garden.<br />

B. 'WATERFALL' - As the name implies, this dark<br />

green boxwood is a semi weeping form which could be staked<br />

up or allowed to irregularly grow to 3-4'. Would be nice<br />

falling over and around a large rock or wall.<br />

B. SEMPERVIRENS 'VARIEGATA'-Eventually this<br />

boxwood gets to 8' to 10' tall. We use this variegated foliage<br />

for flower arrangements year round. Grows well in full shade<br />

CALLICARPA 'PROFUSION' - Every year we are more<br />

impressed with this beautiful, fruited plant. The green foliage<br />

appears in April followed in July by purple flowers. By<br />

October the berries turn purple and the foliage turns yellow.<br />

The lustrous purple fruit hold on all winter (until March). Best<br />

planted with a light backdrop such as a weathered fence.<br />

Wonderful when used as an informal hedge.<br />

CALYCANTHUS<br />

C. CHINENSIS - This rarely offered shrub has large,<br />

broad, green leaves. The foliage has very heavy veining and<br />

looks evergreen even though it isn't. This recently introduced<br />

plant has white flowers with white thick-textured petals. The<br />

flowers look somewhat like a single camellia in June.<br />

C. 'EDITH WILDER' - Found at Gertrude Wister's<br />

garden in Swarthmore, Pa. The purple flowers in summer are<br />

very sweetly scented. The fall foliage is golden yellow and<br />

adds another season to this southern native.<br />

C. FLORIDUS 'ATHENS' ( Catherine ?). We will use<br />

C. 'Athens' as that is how we received the plant. The normal<br />

C. floridus has maroon purple flowers in early summer.<br />

C. f. 'Athens' has greenish yellow flowers about an inch and<br />

one-half wide that have cantaloupe fragrance.<br />

C. ' HARTLAGE WINE' - Richard Hartlage hybridized<br />

Calycanthus (then sinocalycanthus) chinensis with C. flordus<br />
