Celebrating 40 years!
FALL 2008 - SPRING 2009
INTRODUCTION
It’s time again, for the annual state of the nursery address. For those of you new to our
operation, we start the catalog each season with an update on our family’s activities along
with any new business news pertaining to the nursery. Just to let you all know this is our
40 th anniversary catalog. It hardly seems possible for so many seasons to have passed by;
recently Roger was talking about what we should do on our 0 th 5
catalog! We told him
lets just handle them one at a time. This year has flown by and it seems too soon for the
weather and seasons to be changing. We have experienced an unusually cool and short
summer even by our standards. However, this cooler weather has been bringing people
out to the nursery recently. This is always the one good part about the end of the long hot
summer; it is always fun see people start thinking about planting and gardening again.
This past season has been busy, we were especially excited to help host the Willamette
Valley Hardy Plant Study Weekend this past June. The study weekend seemed genuinely
well received by all those in attendance and it was wonderful to be able to catch up with
old friends and share the garden with many new ones as well. We attended more plant
sales this spring than ever before. It is always enjoyable to meet new people from around
the region and introduce them to the plants we offer. We are constantly surprised that
after 40 years in business many people here in the northwest still don’t know we exist. So
consider it a personal favor to us, if you like what we do, please share us with your
friends. We have always relied heavily on word of mouth for the bulk of our advertising.
We are always more than happy to send catalogs to anyone who requests them and you
can always refer them to www.gosslerfarms.com. Sorry for the shameless plug!
One of the projects we have been working on this past year with Timber Press in Portland
Oregon, who approached us about writing a book on shrubs. We have been working hard
on completing the manuscript and we recently turned it over to the publisher. They are
anticipating a release date for the book of sometime in the fall of 2009. We are both
excited and anxious to see the finished product. We will keep you informed on its status
leading up to the release. We are hoping to highlight the use of shrubs in the landscape
and will discuss in detail some 200 different plants.
Another exciting event for us this year is Dawn moving to Thurston Elementary School.
This will make her commute about a half of a mile to and from work each day. This is
quite a change from 5 years ago when she was commuting 28 miles one way. The other
exciting part of the move is it will put Dawn and Pierce in the same school for one year.
This will be Pierce’s last year in elementary school before he is off to middle school.
Roger has some lectures scheduled for the fall and spring and is looking forward to
meeting some new plant groups along the way. Marj has been doing her normal summer
golf odyssey this year. She will hate us for mentioning it here, but we want to wish her a
great year. On September 14, 2008 she turns 80! She is an important part of our business
