R. RECURVOIDES KW 7184 - This rhododendron of the Glischra section has unbelievable foliage on a small 3-4' shrub. The bronze indumentum is glorious year round and the foliage has a wonderful fragrance on warm days. 3 gal. $ 34.00 R. ROXIEANUM var. OREONASTES - Greer - This porcupine leafed plant has one word. WOW ! 2 gal. $ 30.00 R. SCHLIPPINBACHIII . The Royal azalea is a deciduous shrub with lovely light green leaves that are distinctly oval. In fall the leaves turn pretty yellow before falling. The flowers are the softest light pink and look like they float on the plant like early butterflies. Needs some afternoon shade to thrive 1 gal. $ 18.00 R. SINO GRANDE - The leaves on R. 'Sino Grande'can get to 18"x12" and have beautiful veining on top of the leaves. The indumentum is a silver gray. The flowers are soft yellow on a large upright truss. This species is one of the giants of the rhododendron world. 1 gal. $ 35.00 R. STENOPETALUM 'LINNEARIFOLIUM ' - An amazingly narrow deciduous foliage covers this 2' shrub. The soft pink flowers are also really narrow. 1 gal. $ 18.00 R. TEMENIUM. This neriiflora series has pale green leaves and glorius under sides to the leaves. The flowers are yellow in April. The plant will form a neat mound. 1 gal. $ 22.00 R. 'WHITBY ISLAND' is a Rhododendron nivium hybrid, so it has a rich purple flower in spring. The foliage is 12" long, dark green, with tan to light brown indumentum. 2 gal. $ 30.00 R. WILLIAMSONIANUM - A dwarf low grower to 3-4' in perhaps 30 years. The leaves are oval and glossy bronze when emerging in spring. The leaves will turn dark green in summer. The flowers are lovely soft pink bells in April. In fall the leaves turn to a riot of yellow, red and orange. 5 gal. $ 50.00 RIBES - R. SANGUINEUM 'BROCKLEBANKII' - A golden leafed form of our native flowering current. Flowers are pink in spring. The golden foliage holds its color all summer with afternoon shade. 1 gal. $ 18.00 2 gal. $ 24.00 R. SANGUINEUM 'PULBOROUGH SCARLET' - This currant has long, deep red racemes in spring. One of our great native plants that had to go to Europe to be named. We saw Ribes sanguinium all over southern England and western France several years ago. 1 gal. $ 18.00 R. SANGUINEUM 'STRYBING PINK' - From Strybing Arboretum, San Francisco, comes this soft pink flowering current. As western American natives we fail to realize how great these plants are. In Europe we have seen the different cultivars all over. 1 gal. $ 18.00 R. SANGUINEUM 'VARIEGATA' - This current has a splashed cream variegation on a dark green leaf. The flowers are mid pink. LIMITED 1 gal. $ 22.00 26 ROBINIA PSEUDOACACIA 'FRISIA' - The golden leafed black locust has brilliant yellow foliage all summer with no green at the center of the tree. This year we have 1-2 foot plants which will be great to ship. R. 'Frisia' grows 4-6 feet per year. 1 gal. $ 24.00 ROMNEYA COULTERI - Matilija Poppy or Fried Egg Plant. This perennial will get 4'-6' tall and if happy will form quite a thicket in time. Even though it is from dry areas in California, we grow our plant in full sun, good drainage with lots of water. We have seen Romneya growing in a ditch covered in water during winter. The flowers are 6" across with white crepe paper petal. The stamens are egg yolk color. 1 gal. $ 14.00 ROSA R. GLAUCA - The dusty purple gray foliage makes a lovely background for many perennials. The plant is a graceful grower and needs to be pruned regularly (once a year) to keep it bushy. The single flowers are small and deep pink. In late summer the hips turn a subtle orange to prolong the season. 1 gal. $ 18.00 R. POMIFERA - The apple rose has tiny 1" pink flowers in May. If you saw the flowers you would dig up the plant and throw it away. The great thing are the hips that turn a burnt orange in late Aug.-Sept. The 1" fruit are truly beautiful when they cover the upright 6'-8' shrub. We don't spray and haven't seen any pests on R. pomifera. 2 gal. $ 22.00 R. SERICEA PTERACANTHA - This rose is a show stopper with the large red thorns. We cut our plants down to one foot each March. The new growth has very large red thorns. With this approach there will be no flowers but who cares with those stunning thorns. 1 gal. $ 18.00 SALIX S. ALBA 'SERICEA' - This willow is an excellent alternative to Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'. We haven't seen a good specimen of the weeping pear. The pear has thorns, smelly flowers and an ugly form. The semi weeping willow has glorious gray leaves up to 6" long and 1/2" wide. We use it as a cut back plant to give real silver accent. 1 gal. $ 14.00 S. 'CHERMESINA' - Brilliant orange, red and yellow stems from early fall until it leafs out in spring. This willow is exceptionally hardy and fast growing. We prune to 3' each spring just before bud break and it forms a 10' stunner all winter. . 1 gal. $ 14.00 S. INTEGRA 'HAKURO - NISHIKI' - The dappled willow has narrow leaves that are light green spotted with white and pink. The overall effect is of white through the summer. This is an easy perennial (a shrub we cut down each spring) for the wet or well drained garden. 1 gal. $ 15.00 S. IRRORATA 'ROSEMARY VEREY' - A white stemmed (gray) willow with narrow leaves. Originally from Rosemary Verey's garden in England. The winter stems almost glow against our bark covered soil. Can take wet (boggy) or well drained soil. 1 gal. $ 18.00 S. LANATA - We have seen this fabulous willow in England and we were very attracted by its felted gray leaves. The 3-4' plant has small (1") gray leaves so the plant looks grayish white from a distance. Can grow in moist soil or well drained soil. The plants are small but well worth the price. 1 gal. $ 18.00
S. YEZOALPINA - A dwarf willow that only gets 6-12 inches tall, but can grow 6 feet across. The foliage is large, oval-shaped and dark green, with heavy veins. A good moderate ground cover. Can grow in hot sun here. 1 gal. $ 14.00 SAMBUCUS - S. 'BLACK BEAUTY' - The leaves appear in spring and are a nice purple. As the summer goes on the large foliage turns almost black. We have seen a 10' plant in Portland that is really beautiful with its dark foliage and light pink flowers. Would be great paired with pink and white flowers. 1 gal. $ 15.00 S. 'BLACK LACE' -We have had S. 'Black Beauty' for several years and now we have a cut leafed form with dark purple leaves. This shrub has an arching form with the dark foliage and handsome pink flowers in late spring. 1 gal. $ 15.00 S. NIGRA PULVERULENTA - This green foliaged elderberry has white variegation that can totally engulf the leaves. The overall effect is of a white foliaged plant. There are no flowers to speak of. 1 gal. $15.00 SARCOCOCCA HOOKERIANA 'HUMILUS' - We always get calls for this shrubby ground cover. It is very nice year round with its narrow dark green leaves. But in the winter the 12-18" creeping shrub has small white flowers and shiny black fruit. The flowers are small but have a powerfully strong scent. 1 gal. $ 12.00 3 for $ 30.00 SCHIZOPHRAGMA - S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'BROOKSIDE LITTLE LEAF' - (Little leaf when juvenile) We saw this plant at Brookside one fall climbing at least 20' up a tree with large leaves. All of the other plants we have seen have tiny leaves. Most of these plants have 1/2" leaves. Try this shade lover on a tree or wall. 1 gal. $ 14.00 S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'JANE PLATT' - See Hydrangea 'Jane Platt'. S. 'MOOONLIGHT' is a climbing hydrangea relative from Japan. The silver leaves have dark green veining making a nice combination. Our plant is 20' tall after 20' years and rarely blooms (white lacecap.) 1 gal. $ 18.00 S. HYDRANGEOIDES 'ROSEUM' has soft pink sterile flowers in clusters up to 8" across. This handsome climber has dark green foliage which makes a perfect background for the lacecap flowers. 1 gal. $ 18.00 S. INTEGRIFOLIUM VAR. 'FAURIEI' - This schizophragma has much larger foliage and flowers than S. hydrangeoides. The large, dark green leaves are very handsome all summer and turn yellow in fall. The flower heads get to 10" across and have white, sterile flowers. This central Chinese species is supposed to grow up cliffs in its native habitat. 1 gal. $ 22.00 SCHIZOSTYLIS S. 'MRS. HAGGARTY' - We have had this schizostylis since the early 1960's and this South African has survived -12° F. The pink flowers are borne on 18" stalks late August- October. 1 gal. $ 8.00 27 S. 'OREGON SUNSET' - We are thrilled with our named variety. It is in England and we regularly see S. 'Oregon Sunset' in lists and nurseries throughout the west. Bright red flowers on a vigorous plant. 1 gal. $ 8.00 S. PALLADIFLORA - This light pink (almost white) Kaffir lily makes a nice show in front of Callicarpa 'Profusion'. 1 gal. $ 8.00 S. 'SUNRISE' -Has bright pink flowers on 18" stems late August - November. 1 gal. $ 8.00 S. 'VISCOUNTESS BYNG' - The year's last schizostylis to bloom in late September, but most falls it will bloom past Thanksgiving. S. 'Viscountess Byng' has narrow, light pink petals. 1 gal. $ 8.00 SEQUOIA S. SEMPERVIRENS 'HENDERSON BLUE' - Could be grown as a tree but with this redwood we grow then as a shrubby arching plant. The rich blue flat needles are wonderful for the shrub garden. We prune upright growing branches 2 times per year to keep the plant shrubby. 1 gal. $ 18.00 SOLANUM GLASNEVIN - We tried this potato vine several times in various parts of our garden. The plants survived, not thrived. We finally got smarter and put a plant on a trellis in full sun surrounded by asphalt. WOW ! What has happened in several years is amazing. We have small blue flowers all summer on a vigorous vine. The surprising thing is the trunk has a 3" caliper and we must prune hard each spring to control the plant. It doesn't run, but is very happy with the glossy foliage and blue flowers. 1 gal. $ 12.00 SPIRAEA J 'OGON' - Has golden foliage almost conifer like. The leaves are 2" long and 1/2" wide. The soft golden color holds on a good part of the summer then fades to green. The fall color is bright yellow. Flowers are small white clusters. 1 gal. $ 14.00 STACHYURUS S. 'MAGPIE' - Next year. S. SALICIFOLIUS - We look at his plant strictly for its narrow (long leaves). Our plant in the garden has 6" long and 1/2" wide leaves on an irregular open plant. The flowers are four inch spikes of yellow in early spring. 1 gal. $ 30.00 STEWARTIA - S. KOREANA - We never seem to have enough of this superb tree. Our big 30' specimen has deep green heavily veined leaves all summer. In fall the leaves turn brilliant scarlet. The flowers are 2" across and have yellow stamens. S. koreana blooms for at least a month during June and July. The bark exfoliates in beautiful patches. Stewartia Koreana is a wonderful tree year round, is hardy and pest and disease resistant. 2 gal. $ 32.00 S. MONADELPHA -One of the most beautiful trees in our garden. S. monodelpha has incredible flaking, tan, orange bark. The dark green foliage turns brilliant orange, purple, red. Each plant of S. monadelpha has a different fall color.
