S. PSEUDOCAMELLIA - This stewartia is probably the
finest for general cultivation. The bark flakes off like a
sycamore and has patches of creamy gray, brown, and orange.
The flowers are white and have orange stamens. The green
foliage turns flaming crimson and yellow in fall This is a
small 20'-40' tree of the greatest qualities.
1 gal. $ 22.00
S. ROSTRATA - An exceedingly rare stewartia from
China. The dark green leaves are an excellent backdrop for
the lovely white flower buds ! The buds have a deep maroon
purple bract to enclose the bud and flower. The white flowers
have orange stamens. After the flowers drop in June-July the
bracts are beautiful the rest of summer. Fall foliage color will
be reds, yellows and purples. 2 gal. $ 22.00
S. SINENSIS - This tree is the smallest of the Asian
stewartias. The flowers are 1" across in June-July. The
bronzy new growth turns green all summer then the most
brilliant glowing red in fall. The plant can practically be seen
in the dark it's so bright. 1 gal $ 22.00
STYRAX
S. 'CARILLON' - "Cousin It". That's the nickname
S. 'Carillon' has gotten here. The main trunk is irregular and
will lose and regain the central leader over time. The dark
green foliage cascades all summer. In the fall the foliage
turns yellow. The flowers are small white stars. The foliage is
so full that the trunks can't be seen, hence its nickname,
"Cousin It." LIMITED 2 gal. $ 45.00
S. JAPONICA 'EMERALD PAGODA' - We first saw
this plant at NCSU a year after J.C. Raulston had gone to
Korea. (1985?). The original and only graft was 6 inches tall
and well hidden in the greenhouse. Two years later I asked
J.C. if any were available. Yes, 6 inch plants or a 3-4 foot
specimen. We found a large box and brought the three to four
foot plant home. The first 2 years the leaves were small then
it got established. The leaves are double the size and the
flowers are at least twice the size as S. japonica. It looks
tropical in its lushness. Again, "Thank you," to J.C.
S. JAPONICA 'FRAGRANT FOUNTAIN' P.P.A.F. We
have had Styrax jap. 'Carillon' for many years and it's a
beautiful small tree. The only problem is our 30 year old plant
is 12' X 12' so it takes up a lot of room in a small garden,
however beautiful it is. We found out about a new weeping
Styrax japonica several years ago discovered by an Oregon
nurseryman who grows thousands of seedlings. Occasionally
a new interesting plant pops up. This excellent plant will grow
upright with a terminal leader. All the stems are strongly
weeping. We have seen trees that are less the 2' wide. The
flowers are the typical white stars in May and June. We only
have a small supply available, so that's the reason for the high
price. Be the first in the world to have this fine selection.
1 gal. $ 80.00
S. JAPONICA 'FROSTED EMERALD' -P.P.A.F - is
from the same nurseryman with an excellent eye for new
plants. Foliage is what it's all about! The foliage on this
styrax is deep green with bright splashes of creamy white.
We have seen plants of Styrax 'Frosted Emerald' in full sun
that have lovely splashes of white on the leaf. In semi shade
the plant will be almost totally creamy white. We would
recommend that it is grown with some afternoon shade.
One per customer 1 gal. $ 80.00
upright shrub will grow in full fun or semi-shade.
SYRINGA
that are deeply cut. This easy growing pretty plant is very
adaptable. The flowers are light lavender and are an added
bonus to the pretty foliage. 1 gal. $ 14.00
S. 'JOSEE'- Introduced by Minier Nursery, France in
the 1970's, this hybrid of S. patula x macrophylla x meyeri
will bloom for an exceedingly long time in spring. The light
purple flowers have small individual flowers but are carried in
great numbers. S. 'Josee' will grow to 4'-6' tall.
1 gal. $ 14.00
TAXUS 'BEANPOLE' - J ust as the name says, this yew is a
beanpole narrow (8'x1'). The deep green foliage will be a
wonderful contrast to low growing shrubs or perennials.
TRACHELOSPERMUM JASMINOIDES ORIDO
NISHIKI - The star jasmine is a standard in warm climate
areas and over the last 15-20 years is seen regularly in the
Willamette Valley. The species has deep green leaves and
white star shaped very fragrant flowers. This cultivar has deep
golden leaves with deep green margins. The new growth is
peachy-orange and the plant will make quite a statement in
your garden.
LIMITED 1 gal. $ 20.00
TRACHYCARPUS
T. FORTUNEI - The windmill palm is one of the hardiest
palms we can grow. The parent plant went through -12° F.
and 0° F. two times. A superb palm from China to give that
tropical touch we saw in Tom Hobbs glorious garden in
Vancouver, BC, where he has used several palms to frame the
house and view. Also, makes a fine container specimen.
1 gal. $ 15.00
2 gal. $ 40.00
T. WAGNERIENSIS - We have been told this palm is
hardier than T. fortunei so will probably survive 0° F. The
leaves are smaller than T. fortunei but are still lovely. Some
gardeners say that windmill palms don't fit our mixed
woodland gardens but both these palms are native to the same
areas our rhododendron and magnolias are found so we think
they fit beautifully while also adding the tropical look. Plants
are small but at a reasonable price for this rare plant. Thanks
to Roger Warner for the seed! 1 gal. $ 15.00
TRICYRTIS
T. MACRANTHOPSIS - Very limited. This toad lily
will form an arching perennial for the woodland garden. The
foliage is lovely, let alone the beautiful flowers in late August-
September. Small 1 gal. $ 10.00
TRILLIUM RIVALE - We want to thank Glenn Withy
and Charles Price for the original seedlings of T. rivale. This
southern Oregon native will get 6" tall and carry white flowers
spotted with pink in early spring. T. rivale will seed and make
glorious carpets of bloom. 2 1/4"pot $ 6.50
