M . g. 'GOLD RUSH' - This dawn redwood is distinctive because its needles are rich yellow all summer. This deciduous tree was a sport from Metasequoia glyptostroboides found in China during the 1940's. Can grow in moist soil and makes a soft backdrop of yellow behind other conifers. 2 gal. $ 40.00 MICROBIOTA DECUSSATA - This Siberian conifer is a chameleon. All spring through fall the low growing plant is deep forest green and in late fall it changed to a purplish tan that adds color all winter. M. decussata forms a low shrub 12"x36" and will grow in full sun or semi shade. 1 gal. $ 12.00 NELLIA AFFINIS is an American native that has purple new leaves. The leaves are about 2" long and are deeply serrated. This medium sized shrub has pink flowers 2" long in late spring. This attractive shrub should be planted more often in our gardens. (We need to get a plant into our own garden!) 2 gal. $ 22.00 NOTHOPANAX DELAVAYI - This semi hardy (15° F.) evergreen has leaves that look somewhat like a maple. Eventually getting 6-8' tall, the tropical looking leaves are a background to the ivy-like white flowers. 1 gal. $ 20.00 NYSSA N. SINENSIS - Finally we have a few plants of this excellent plant. Nyssa sinensis is a Chinese relative to our Southeast native tupelo. The small to medium sized tree is adaptable and easy to grow. Fall color is stunning redorange. This is a tree that is practically unknown in American gardens, but should be grown more. 1 gal. $ 30.00 NYSSA SYLVATICA 'AUTUMN CASCADE' - The black gum is a native of the Southeast U.S. The foliage is glossy green during summer turning glorious red-purple in fall. The plant is a weeping form, so can be grown in smaller gardens. Very adaptable for wet areas as well as well drained. 2 gal. $ 40.00 N. SYLVATICA 'RED RAGE' has the glossiest green foliage of any of the tupelo cultivars we have seen. This plant looks robustly healthy all summer and in October-November will turn flaming red. 1 gal. $ 14.00 N. SYLVATICA 'RED WINE' - We have also seen this plant listed as N. syl. 'Red Red Wine'. The dark green glossy foliage turns brilliant dark red in fall. The southeastern U.S. native will grow in wet soils as well as well drained soils. 2 gal. $ 40.00 N. SYLVATICA 'WILDFIRE' - has brilliant new growth through the late spring and early summer. The older leaves are deep green and will turn bright red in fall. 1 gal. $ 40.00 5 gal. $ 60.00 OMPHALOIDES 'CHERRY INGRAM' - Named for English gardener Collingwood Ingram (of flowering cherry fame). This low growing perennial gets up to 1' tall in bloom with small brilliant blue flowers. In early March-April O. 'Cherry Ingram' is a perfect companion for Corylopsis pauciflora. The plants will slowly grow into mats of flowers and foliage. 1 gal. $ 10.00 OPHIOPOGON NIGRESCENS - Black Mondo Grass. The black color is actually a sunburn of maximum proportions. If put in full shade, it will be green. Ophiopogon nigrescens a 22 Ophiopogon nigrescens cont. low growing, grassy looking plant. It is great with cyclamen or snowdrops for a great contrast. 1 gal. $ 12.00 OSMANTHUS O. BURKWOODII - A 5' shrub with small evergreen foliage. The leaves are dark green and matte not shiny and the white flowers will cover the plants in early spring. Osmanthus burkwoodii is an easy grower in the Northwest, California and the South. 1 gal. $ 12.00 O. FRAGRANS VAR. AURANTIACUS - This is an upright growing evergreen shrub. Probably will grow to 15' in time. The flower clusters are orange and are sweetly fragrant during fall-winter. 1 gal. $ 28.00 O. HETEROPHYLLUS 'GOSHIKI' - This evergreen shrub grows 4'-5' tall and wide in time. The foliage is holly like and is marbled with yellow on a dark green background. 1 gal. $ 15.00 2 gal. $ 25.00 O. HETEROPHYLLUS 'KEMBU' has narrow leaves with a broad, creamy band around the edge. This O. heterophyllus has fewer thorns than most of the other cultivars. Seems to be a slow grower. 1 gal. $ 22.00 O. 'OGON' - Has golden holly-like leaves throughout the year. Our plant sulked until the magnolia overhead grew. Seems to do best in shade as the color will be best and the plant will thrive. 1 gal. $ 18.00 O. 'SAN JOSE' - We never seem to have enough of this evergreen shrub. O. 'San Jose' gets to 15' and is an upright grower. Has been hardy to -12° F. here. The evergreen leaves are holly-like, but don't have sharp points like the holly. The tiny whitish flowers in fall have a wonderful apricot fragrance. O. 'San Jose' will make a superb hedge. 1 gal. $ 15.00 O. 'SASABA' - Even though these plants are small we are offering them because we think O. 'Sasaba' is an outstanding plant. The sharply pointed evergreen leaves look somewhat like a small bamboo. We have seen 5-6' upright shrubs of O. 'Sasaba' at Brookside Gardens, MD and were very impressed. The plants we are offering are 3 year olds and seem to take off and grow faster after this age. 1 gal. $ 20.00 OXYDENDRUM ARBOREUM - Sourwood. This small tree has almost everything we could want in a tree. The small tree gets to 20' or so and has an arching form. The white flowers look like long fingers and are small white bells in summer. In fall the red color is gorgeous red for quite a long time. Easy to grow in well drained soil. 1 gal. $ 16.00 PAEONIA P. 'ALICE HARDING' - (Lemoine 1935). A semidouble medium yellow. The foliage is attractive as are all the tree peonies. 3 gal. $ 75.00 P. 'BANQUET' - (Saunders 1941) This semi double, red flowering tree peony is very striking in May. It's hard to miss these beautiful flowers. 5 gal. $ 100.00 P. 'BARTZELLA' is an interspecific hybrid between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies. The flowers are the color, size and form of the tree peonies but there isn't a trunk or branches. In spring the growth quickly expands and large buds form. P. DELAVAYI - This plant looks very much like P. ludlowii va. 'Lutea', but rather than the brilliant yellow flowers, P. delavayii will have deep maroon flowers. The 6-8' shrub will have multiple trunks and spectacular green foliage all summer. In the fall the leaves will turn right yellow. The plant is very hardy as well as being a beautiful shrub. 1 gal. $ 25.00 P. 'GAUGIN' is many peony growers' favorite variety. The flowers have multiple shadings of red, purple and peach. The six inch flowers are lovely in bud as well as in full bloom. The foliage is dark green spring-summer. In fall there is yellow and red fall color. 2 gal. $ 150.00 P. 'GOLD SOVEREIGN' - (1949) . This soft yellow tree peony is the last to bloom in May. The multiple stemmed plant fills in, growing fast into a broad plant. 3 gal. $ 75.00 P. LUDLOWII 'LUTEA' - This tree peony has single golden yellow flowers. The plant can get to 8' tall in 20 years. The foliage is typical tree peony form but is longer and narrow. These plants are seedlings so may take 2-3 years to bloom but will have uniform gold, yellow flowers. Molly the Witch. 1 gal. $ 18.00 P. MLOKOSEWITSCHII - The molly witch peony has attractive foliage, especially the new growth which is rhubarb red for several weeks in spring. The large buds open to bright yellow flowers in April. 'VESUVIAN' -(Saunders 1948) - This vigorous tree peony is very low growing and not only has beautiful flowers, but the cut leafed foliage turns color in the fall to extend the season. P.'Vesuvian' has dark purple-black double flowers for a long season in late April into early May. 2 gal. $100.00 PARROTIA PERSICA 'VANESSA' - This is a narrow growing parrotia, so can be grown in a much smaller position. 1 gal. $ 25.00 PARTHENOCISSUS P. 'FENWAY PARK' - This golden form of Boston Ivy was actually found in Boston at Fenway Park. The fine textured golden leaves hold their color all summer. It isn't an aggressive vine so it can grow with other moderate growers. 1 gal. $ 20.00 F. 'HENRYANA ' - This parthenocissus species has dark green leaves with silver veins. There is also a definite purple cast to the underside of the leaves and petioles. The fall color is brilliant red. This is a small growing vine which does well in filtered shade like growing up a magnolia. 1 gal. $ 20.00 PHILADELPHUS P. 'BELLE ETOILE' - This fragrant mock orange has white flowers with lavender flush on the inside of the petals. Some books say how dark purple the centers are, but being honest, the centers are a nice light lavender. Be warned in warm climates (California and the deep south) the petals will be white. This is one of the loveliest mock oranges. 1 gal. $ 17.00 P. CORONARIUS 'VARIEGATUS.' - We don't have a big supply but we can help some people get this beautiful plant. The variegation is a broad white margin to the midgreen leaves. We don't seem to see many flowers but they are white and sweetly scented in June. 1 gal. $ 19.00 23 P. 'FALLBROOK' - The flowers of P. 'Fallbrook' are single but are 2" across and are pure white. The fragrant flowers always draw attention because they are so large. 1 gal. $ 18.00 P. 'INNOCENCE' - A variegated mock orange that has splashed white on dark green leaves. The flowers are 2" across and are pure white. Makes a nice change from the typical mock oranges. 2 gal. $ 22.00 P. 'MANTEAU D'HERMINE' - This Lemoine hybrid is a 2-3' mound of small leaves. Flowers are double, fragrant and creamy white in June. 1 gal. $ 25.00 P. 'SNOWBELLE' - This mock orange will be 3-4' tall. The flowers are double white in late May-June. Can be grown in even the smallest garden. 1 gal. $ 17.00 P. 'SNOW DWARF' - A very hardy Canadian hybrid mock orange. The white flowers are very fragrant in June and are 1 1/2" across. Grows to 4-5' tall. 1 gal. $ 17.00 PHORMIUM - We have been able to grow the New Zealand flaxes outside through 0-10° F. for years. We, in fact, just had to remove a 10' P. 'Dark Delight' from the front of Eric and Dawn's front window (bad placement). The plants are very happy in full sun with lots of water. We see plants in California with low water, but color seems to fade. Superb container plants in areas that get colder. Just move into unheated area that won't go below 15° F. for extended periods. P. 'BLACK RAGE' has extraordinarily dark purple black foliage. The leaves are narrow and really upright growing. 1 gal. $ 20.00 P. 'DUSKY CHIEF'. This dark purple phormium will make a great accent in the perennial border with yellows, chartreuse foliage or other low growing plants. 1 gal. $ 20.00 P. 'EVENING GLOW '- This deep pink striped phormium is one of the richest colored forms of flax that we grow. P 'Evening Glow' is a great plant for a container or for evening sun to shine through. 1 gal. $ 18.00 P. 'FLAMINGO' - is a smaller growing phormium with narrow leaves that are orangish and pink colored. P. 'MAORI MAIDEN' - Has rich purple-pink stripes running vertically up the leaves. One of the most colorful of the New Zealand flaxes. 1 gal. $ 18.00 P. 'PINK PANTHER' - is a purple and pink striped phormium that grows quickly into a handsome specimen. 1 gal. $ 22.00 P. 'PINK STRIPE'. This large grower has purple centers with pink margins. The leaves are broad so will make quite a statement in the garden or container. 1 gal. $ 20.00 P. 'PLATT'S BLACK' - Deep black-purple phormium with narrow leaves. One of the best phormiums for it's deep colored foliage. 1 gal. $ 20.00 P.
