A. 'SHARKSKIN SHOES' - This hybrid is from the<br />

Ruth Bancroft Garden in Walnut Creek, CA (P.S. If ever in the<br />

area make an appointment to see this stunning garden). The<br />

upright growing leaves are olive green and will get 3'x3' in<br />

ALBIZZIA 'SUMMER CHOCOLATE' - The Silk<br />

Tree is a broad growing tree with pinnate leaves. The pink<br />

clouds of flowers appear in midsummer. This cultivar has<br />

deep purple pinnate leaves all summer. We don't know how<br />

large A 'Summer Chocolate' will get, but even a small plant is<br />

very handsome, whether in the garden or a large container.<br />

ANDROMEDA<br />

A. 'BLUE ICE' - has narrow, dusty blue foliage on a 1'<br />

tall plant that will grow to 2' wide. The flowers are little white<br />

urns that cover the plant in April. Needs good drainage and<br />

full sun to semi-shade. 1 gal. $ 14.00<br />

A. 'KIRIGAMINE' -Has dark green leaves that are even<br />

thinner than A. 'Blue Ice.' The flowers are light pink in April-<br />

May. Makes a good ground cover around rhododendrons.<br />

ARAUCARIA ARAUCANA - Monkey Puzzle from<br />

Southern Chile has very sharp, pointed needles. This<br />

interesting plant is rarely offered for sale. These are small but<br />

ARBUTUS<br />

A. 'MARINA' - This garden worthy madrone is probably<br />

a cross of two European species of arbutus. The stems peel to<br />

reveal the orange-copper bark. A. 'Marina' needs good<br />

drainage and a moderate climate, such as coastal condition of<br />

Northwest or California. We once saw a big plant at the<br />

Victor Reiter, Jr. garden in San Francisco and it was a<br />

stunning tree. 1 gal. $ 25.00<br />

A. UNEDO COMPACTA - 10' shrub that will have<br />

deep green, evergreen foliage. In fall, the small white urnshaped<br />

flowers cover the plant. At the same time the flowers<br />

appear, the fruit from last years flowers show up in red<br />

clusters. 1 gal. $15.00<br />

A. UNEDO 'ELFIN KING'- is a small (8'-12')<br />

evergreen shrub. The white flowers appear in fall and winter.<br />

The fruit are 1/2" wide and look like round strawberries, hence<br />

the name. This year-round shrub has some attractive feature all<br />

ARCTOSTAPHYLOS<br />

A. DENSIFLORA 'HOWARD MCMINN' - This<br />

manzanita has gray green foliage on a 3'-5' shrub. The light<br />

pink flowers are a nice addition to a pretty shrub.<br />

A. DENSIFLORA 'SENTINEL' - This hardy California<br />

native has deep green evergreen leaves on a 5' - 6' shrub. The<br />

bark will peel off revealing a coppery orange under bark. Has<br />

A. 'PACIFIC MIST' - This low grower (2'-3') will have<br />

narrow gray leaves. A. 'Pacific Mist' is a handsome, large scale<br />

groundcover which will get 8'-10' across. After watering the<br />

A. 'SUNSET' - is a 4'-5' irregular shrub with dark green<br />

leaves. The bark will peel off in time, making an excellent<br />

ARISAEMA<br />

A. CANDIDISSIMIM - The latest of the jack in the<br />

pulpits to emerge. The lovely pink flowers are borne in June<br />

followed by large glossy leaves. 1 gal. $ 25.00<br />

A. FRANCHETIANUM 'HUGO' - is one of Tony<br />

Avent's hybrids. This plant has large leaves that look totally<br />

tropical with their dark green, broad foliage. The flowers can<br />

get up to 15" tall in late spring and have purple and white<br />

hooded flowers. A.f. 'Hugo' will not start to grow until June,<br />

so don't think your plant has died. 1 gal. $ 25.00<br />

AUCUBA 'ROZANNIE' - This evergreen shrub is THE<br />

plant for that dark spot in your garden. Aucuba 'Rozannie' has<br />

glossy dark green foliage. The fruits are large and bright red.<br />

We heartily recommend this great evergreen.<br />

AZARA MICROPHYLLA 'VARIEGATA' has the same<br />

small leaves as the species, but A. m. 'Variegata' has broad<br />

BAPTISIA<br />

B. 'CAROLINA MOONLIGHT' - This soft yellow false<br />

indigo makes a mounding plant up to 2' X 2'. Once<br />

established B. 'Carolina Moonlight' is extremely hardy and<br />

long lived. Never needs to be divided or fussed with. This is<br />

essentially a perennial lupine with 2' tall flowers.<br />

BERBERIS<br />

B. 'AMSTELVEEN' - A 2-3 foot evergreen barberry with<br />

an arching habit. The outer stems slightly cascade. The<br />

glossy green leaves have a beautiful silver tomentum on the<br />

undersides. Flowers are light yellow.<br />

B. CALLIANTHA - This evergreen barberry has dark<br />

green foliage with silvery tomentum. The flowers are yellow<br />

mounding form like B. 'Gold Pillar.' The bright yellow leaves<br />

B. 'GOLD PILLAR' B.T MARIA ppaf- The pictures<br />

look great for this golden form of barberry that is similar to<br />

B. 'Helmond Pillar.' This plant comes from Poland and has<br />

very bright yellow foliage (all summer in the nursery)<br />

followed by orange-red fall color. This is the replacement for<br />

B. 'Pow Wow' which we hoped it was better than it turned out<br />

B. 'ORANGE KING' - Has dark evergreen rounded<br />

leaves. The leaves make the perfect foil for the rich orangish<br />

flowers in early spring. 2 gal. $ 22.00<br />

B. 'RED JEWEL' will grow to 2-3' tall in time. The<br />

glossy reddish purple foliage is semi-evergreen so will make a<br />

show all year. The plant will form a low mounding shape.<br />
