MAGNOLIA 'MARJORY GOSSLER' - (denudata x sargentiana 'Robusta Blood Moon'). We sent pollen to Phil Savage (Detroit) and he hybridized and grew some plants to tree size then sent us scion wood. The best of these plants Phil named M. 'Marjory Gossler'. It has large white flowers with a pink flush. The sister seedling has been hardy to -25-30° F. in a parking lot. This is a very attractive large tree (30'). 1 gal. $ 65.00 MAGNOLIA 'MISS HONEYBEE' has deep yellow flowers in mid april just before the leaves unfurl. The flowers are smaller than M. 'Elizabeth' but are deep yellow and have the dark green foliage as a background. 2 gal. $ 75.00 MAGNOLIA 'PAUL COOK' (M. lennii (seedling) x M. sprengeri diva) - A hybrid by Frank Galyon from Knoxville, TN. The large flowers can be up to 12" across. The tepals are very broad and are pink outside with white inside the flowers. These huge flowers can be among the most spectacular of any hybrid we grow. 1 gal. $ 80.00 MAGNOLIA 'PEACHY' - (M. acuminata 'Fertle Myrtle' X M. sprengeri 'Diva'). This hardy mix of yellow and pink creates an attractive colored flowers. This Phil Savage hybrid was registered by Dick Figlar in '94. M. 'Peachy' will bloom late March - April so will be past most of the frost. 1 gal. $ 80.00 MAGNOLIA 'PEGASUS' (Formerly M. cylindrica) Our tree is 40 years old and is 18' X 15'. The flowrs are white with a slight pink flush. This hardy small tree will make a beautiful show each spring. 1 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA 'PEPPERMINT STICK' - (M. liliflora 'Nigra' X M. veitchii). This was one of Gresham's original named hybrids back in the early '60's. The light pink flowers are very much like M. veitchii. For us, the original Gresham hybrids are easier to grow and better garden plants. 2 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA 'PIET VAN VEEN' has rich pink flowers on this M. campbellii from England. 1 gal. $ 70.00 MAGNOLIA SALICIFOLIA - Those listed have been hardy to -12° F. here: M. SALICIFOLIA 'ELSIE FRYE' - This M. salicifolia was named after great plantswoman Elsie Frye from Seattle. The white flowers are 5-6" across and have pink tipped stamens in March on an upright, pyramidal tree. 1 gal. $ 60.00 5 gal. $100.00 M. SALICIFOLIA 'IUFER' (pronounced eu' - fer ) This cultivar comes from the Iufer Nursery in Salem, OR. We bought many of our original magnolias in the 50's and 60's from Ernie Iufer. This plant is a small tree 20'x12' after 30 years. They will have pure white flowers with pointed tepals. This plant is very similar to M. s. 'Jermyns' and M. s. 'Elsie Frye' but has darker red tips to the stamens. A wonderful small tree for confined areas in the garden. 5 gal. $ 60.00 M. SALICIFOLIA 'MISS JACK' - A large 40' tree with thousands of white flowers for a mass effect. 1 gal. $ 60.00 Open by appointment year round. 541-746-3922 20 MAGNOLIA SARGENTIANA ROBUSTA 'BLOOD MOON' -Named in San Francisco for an opera. Much more upright than M. sargentiana Robusta. Stunning deep pink flowers are 12" across. 1 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA 'SAYONARA' - This Gresham hybrid has large white goblets in March - April. This was one of the early Greshams from the 1960's. Our plant is 30' tall and 20' wide. 2 gal. $ 70.00 MAGNOLIA SIEBOLDII M. SIEBOLDII - Our most recommended magnolia, especially for the small garden. This excellent large shrubsmall tree flowers late April - August 1. The flowers are ivory white with red stamens. The pendant flowers are followed by brilliant pink seed pods like little lanterns. Overall, one of the most beautiful plants we grow. 1 gal. $ 22.00 M. SIEBOLDII 'COLOSSUS' - This form is a chemically induced form of M. sieboldii. We first found plants spring of '06. Many of the plants bloomed with much larger white flowers than the species. The big difference we've seen so far is the much larger oval leaves. We think M. sieboldii 'Colossus' will be a much larger shrub or small tree than M. sieboldii. 2 gal. $ 75.00 MAGNOLIA SOULANGIANA M. s. 'COATES' - We were thrilled to see two pictures of our named hybrid in Jim Gardner's Magnolias. We named this excellent plant for the Leonard Coates Nursery in San Jose, CA. M. soulangiana 'Coates' is a seedling of M. s. 'Rustica Rubra' but has a softer, more attractive purple flower. This is an excellent magnolia for a number of different climates. 1 gal. $ 35.00 M. s. 'GRACE MC DADE' has gigantic pink flowers in March. The flowers are so huge they look almost like you tied fake flowers on. That's not anything against the flowers as they are lovely. 1 gal. $ 30.00 MAGNOLIA 'STAR WARS' is an upright growing magnolia to 30' X15'. The dark green foliage is nice all summer, but it's the beautiful, pinky-purple, large flowers for which it's grown. Hardy below 0° F. and will bloom as a 5-6' plant. 1 gal. $ 50.00 2 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA STELLATA - 'CENTENNIAL' - Named for the Arnold Arboretum's 100th year and is reputed to be an improved 'Waterlily'. It is grown as a seedling for M. stellata 'Rosea'. We are indebted to the Arnold Arboretum who sent us our stock plant. 1 gal. $ 22.00 'CHRYSANTHUMUMIFLORA'. This small full growing star magnolia has an upright form. The flowers are soft pink and fully double. The tepals are smaller and lighter color than M. s. 'Jane Platt'. M. s. 'Chrysanthimumiflora' is a good choice for a small area. 2 gal. $ 50.00 'ROSEA JANE PLATT' - We named this excellent plant for the late Jane Platt of Portland, OR. Mrs. Platt had grown M. stellata 'Rosea' for years. We took cuttings and decided it was a superior clone and asked Jane what to name it. She jokingly said, "How about Jane Platt?" We did and shocked her. The more we watch this plant the better we like it. We think M. stellata 'Jane Platt' and Fothergilla gardenii 'Jane Platt' are fitting tributes to a great friend and gardener. It has been given an Award of Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. 2 gal. $ 65.00
'ROYAL STAR' - A seedling selection of 'Waterlily' having pure white tepals, pink buds, flowers to 6". Originated in John Vermeulen's Nursery in New Jersey. This is one of the hardiest M. stellatas. 1 gal. $ 18.00 'WATER LILY' - Light pink flowers opening to pure white, many tepalled. 1 gal. $ 18.00 MAGNOLIA 'SUNDANCE' - (M. acuminata x M. denudata) is a medium size tree with rich yellow flowers in April. This is the same cross as M. Elizabeth but the flowers are brighter yellow. 2 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA 'SUNSPIRE' is an upright grower to 30' X 10' wide so it will make an excellent tree or patio tree. The flowers are fairly small but are a nice yellow. 2 gal. $ 65.00 MAGNOLIA THOMPSONIANA - The first hybrid magnolia. Thought to be a natural hybrid of M. tripetala and M. virginiana. M. thompsoniana is a large deciduous shrub. Our 50 year old tree is 20' X 20' and has 3 major stems. The ivory flowers appear in May - June and are lemon scented. Rarely offered in nurseries anywhere. 1 gal. $ 45.00 MAGNOLIA VIRGININIANA - var. AUSTRALIS 'HENRY HICKS' Named by the great plantsman Joe McDaniel. M. v. 'Henry Hicks' has been very hardy to -20°F and came from a seedling from the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore, Philadelphia. 1 gal. $ 22.00 MAGNOLIA 'VULCAN' - An incredible glowing redpurple. Our plant is blooming the correct color and size after 3-4 years. The first blooms will be an odd purple and we worried it wasn't the correct plant, but it changed drastically with age. Hardy to probably 0° F. The flowers can be up to 12" across in March. 2 gal. $ 65.00 MAGNOLIA 'WADA'S MEMORY' - We have a hard time keeping up with demand for M. 'Wada's Memory'. M. 'Wada's Memory' is a classy plant for all its merits. The young tree is very upright with bronze new growth and dark green leaves during summer. The white flowers appear in March by the hundreds, if not thousands. The individual flower is not that wonderful but with so many they make a grand display. M. 'Wada's Memory' is well adapted to both cold and warm areas. 1 gal. $ 35.00 MAGNOLIA WILSONII - We sold this beautiful tree for years but we were buying cuttings from a very good propagator. When their nursery closed we couldn't get anyone to root them. We finally got seed and grew them. The white flowers have red stamens in late April - June. The 6" flowers are pendant like M. sieboldii but M. wilsonii becomes a 30' tree. Don't recommend for the southeast or California, but in the northwest M. wilsonii is one of the best summer bloomers. 1 gal. $ 30.00 MAGNOLIA 'WOODSMAN' - One of my least favorite magnolias. The tree itself is very handsome. The flowers are attractive in form, but the colors are wild pink, purple, green, and brownish. Almost everyone else likes the colors, so make your own decision. 1 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA 'YELLOW BIRD' has deep yellow small sized (much smaller than M. 'Elizabeth', for example) flowers that will appear just as the leaves are emerging. Makes an upright tree to 30' to 35' tall with dark green foliage all summer. 1 gal. $ 50.00 21 MAGNOLIA 'YELLOW LANTERN' - A light colored yellow magnolia. Probably closer to cream than true yellow, but still a nice color. Very hardy and fast growing. 1 gal. $ 50.00 2 gall $ 65.00 Now--From Mahonia on MAHONIA M. AQUIFOLIUM 'APOLLO' - We hadn't been very excited about our native Oregon grape until this spring. The normal species of Mahonia aquifolium is an unruly spreader with small cluster of bright yellow flowers. M. a 'Apollo' came to us from Europe and only gets 18" tall and has very large bright yellow flower clusters. This plant is a superior variety well worth growing. 1 gal. $ 20.00 M. 'ARTHUR MENZIES' (Mahonia japonica x lomarifolia). This hybrid is a great winter blooming shrub. Our plants are 10-12' tall and are fully evergreen. Our plants have survived 0° F. undamaged. The flower cluster is over one foot across through late fall into winter. In spring it has blue-purple fruit. Makes a beautiful complement to the leaves. 2 gal. $ 32.00 M. 'CHARITY' - One of the M. media hybrids (japonica x lomarifolia). One of our finest winter (actually year round) shrubs. The evergreen foliage gets up to 18" long and 12" wide. Our big plants of the media hybrids are 12' tall and make an architectural form. The flowers begin to show color (bright yellow) in late November and continue until February. The fruit turns bluish-purple in late spring. When the birds discover the fruit they immediately devour them. 1 gal. $ 30.00 M. 'UNDERWAY' -This M. media hybrid has more cut leaves than some of the other forms. The flowers are the typical bright yellow in mid winter. This hybrid mahonia is much more difficult to find in the trade so we are happy to be able to list it. 2 gal. $ 35.00 MELIANTHUS MAJOR 'ANTONOW'S BLUE' - The honey shrub comes to us from South Africa. We have grown seedlings in our garden for years. Even though we thought M. major was tender, our plant has gone down to 10°F. The plant freezes to the ground but will resprout from the rootstock. The leaves are pinnate and can get 18" long. Our plants get larger each year- 4'-5' tall. The best foliage is in October when there has been rain and the raindrops look like mercury on the rich blue waxy leaves. M. major 'Antonow's Blue' comes from the late Steve Antonow Garden in Seattle and has lovely, rich blue leaves and sometimes (in a very mild winter) will have odd purple flowers on 8' stems. 1 gal. $ 15.00 METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES M. g. 'WAASLAND' -An almost columnar form of dawn redwood. The leaves are light green all summer and turn orange yellow in the fall. This deciduous tree will have dark, almost black, stems in winter. 3 gal. $ 50.00
