Mr. Cavanagh is also a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

firm <strong>of</strong> T. H. Canty & Company, which<br />

does a large insurance anrt -eal estate<br />

business. He is a director <strong>of</strong> the City<br />

National Bank, <strong>of</strong> South Norwalk.<br />

In politics he is a Republican, and takes<br />

an active interest in public affairs. Mr.<br />

Cavanagh is a member <strong>of</strong> the South Norwalk<br />

Club, the Norwalk Country Club,<br />

the Norwalk Yacht Club, and the Catholic<br />

Club, <strong>of</strong> Norwalk.<br />

CAVANAGH, John Joseph,<br />

Manufacturer, Public Official.<br />

This record is concerned with the life<br />

and activity <strong>of</strong> a member <strong>of</strong> the Cavanagh<br />

family who has made business his sphere<br />

<strong>of</strong> influence, John J. Cavanagh, vicepresident<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Cr<strong>of</strong>ut & Knapp Company<br />

<strong>of</strong> Norwalk.<br />

John Joseph Cavanagh is a son <strong>of</strong> Lawrence<br />

and Margaret (Murphy) Cavanagh,<br />

whose early ancestry is given in the preceding<br />

sketch. He was born in Norwalk,<br />

<strong>Connecticut</strong>, January 16, 1864, and his<br />

early education was obtained in the public<br />

schools. At an early age he went to work<br />

for the Cr<strong>of</strong>ut & Knapp Company, manu-<br />

facturers <strong>of</strong> hats, and he is the present<br />

vice-president <strong>of</strong> this company. Mr. Cavanagh<br />

was an ambitious boy, and he<br />

sought to advance himself; the position<br />

which he holds is pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> his success. He<br />

has filled all <strong>of</strong> the intermediate positions,<br />

and in 1910 was made general manager,<br />

holding this <strong>of</strong>fice nine years, being made<br />

vice-president in 1919.<br />

Mr. Cavanagh has taken an active part<br />

in the public life <strong>of</strong> Norwalk, and has sev-<br />

eral times been elected to public <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

In these positions he has reflected honor<br />

on himself and his constituents, through<br />

a sane, wholesome and clearly defined at-<br />

titude on all public questions. He has<br />

the unique distinction <strong>of</strong> having served<br />

each <strong>of</strong> the old cities <strong>of</strong> Norwalk and<br />

South Norwalk as mayor, and further<br />

honor <strong>of</strong> being the father <strong>of</strong> the movement<br />

which resulted in the consolidation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Twin Cities in 1913.<br />

His interest and activities in behalf <strong>of</strong><br />

the Norwalk Hospital constitute one <strong>of</strong><br />

the interests most prominently associated<br />

with the mention <strong>of</strong> his name in Norwalk.<br />

He is vice-president <strong>of</strong> the Central Trust<br />

Company <strong>of</strong> Norwalk, and holds the same<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice in the Dobbs Company <strong>of</strong> New<br />

York City. He is also vice-president <strong>of</strong><br />

the Central National Bank <strong>of</strong> Norwalk.<br />

Socially, Mr. Cavanagh is a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following clubs and organ-<br />

izations : The<br />

the Catholic Clubs <strong>of</strong> New York and<br />

Norwalk<br />

Mr. Cavanagh married Agnes Garvin,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> the late Patrick Garvin, <strong>of</strong><br />

Hartford. They are the parents <strong>of</strong> three<br />

children : John Garvin, Lawrence Dunbar,<br />

and Carroll John.<br />

ANGEVINE, Albert Jay,<br />

Enterprising Citizen.<br />

The name we have just written represents,<br />

as all the good people <strong>of</strong> Stamford<br />

are fully aware, one <strong>of</strong> the city's most<br />

successful business men. Mr. Angevine<br />

has had a somewhat varied career, but has<br />

always manifested a spirit <strong>of</strong> enterprise<br />

and perseverance which has brought him,<br />

through many vicissitudes, to a state <strong>of</strong><br />

assured and honorable prosperity.<br />

The Angevine family is an old one <strong>of</strong><br />

French origin, the name signifying "a na-<br />

tive <strong>of</strong> Anjou." It has been variously<br />

spelled Engevin, Eniervin, Langevine,<br />
