Mr. Fairty married Margaret C. Geddes,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Jeremiah Geddes, <strong>of</strong> Silver<br />

Mine, and their children were two sons,<br />

both <strong>of</strong> whom receive extended mention<br />

below.<br />

FAIRTY, Thomas J.,<br />

Retired.<br />

Thomas J. Fairty, son <strong>of</strong> Thomas Mon-<br />

roe and Margaret C. (Geddes) Fairty,<br />

was born in the town <strong>of</strong> Wilton, Connec-<br />

ticut, March 10, 1856. He attended school<br />

in that town and in Silver Mine. When<br />

he was twelve years old he went to the<br />

Center School in New Canaan. After<br />

leaving school he entered the store <strong>of</strong> his<br />

father, where he made himself generally<br />

useful and at the same time learned the<br />

business in detail. In 1880, Mr. Fairty<br />

went to Stamford and there established<br />

himself in the meat business, continuing<br />

successfully for seven years. At the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> this time he returned again to New<br />

Canaan and was with his father until his<br />

retirement in 1896. Mr. Fairty is a Democrat<br />

in politics, and in his young manhood<br />

served several years as tax collector. He<br />

is an incorporator <strong>of</strong> Lakeview Cemetery<br />

Association, and one <strong>of</strong> the active members<br />

<strong>of</strong> St. Mark's Episcopal Church.<br />

Mr. Fairty married, October 20, 1880,<br />

Caroline Elizabeth Lockwood, a direct<br />

descendant <strong>of</strong> Robert Lockwood, the immigrant<br />

ancestor. Mr. and Mrs. Fairty<br />

are the parents <strong>of</strong> a daughter, Flora Louise,<br />

born September 22, 1881. She mar-<br />

ried Herbert A. Sibley, <strong>of</strong> Westfield,<br />

Massachusetts, and has one daughter,<br />

Juliet Lockwood, born September 26,<br />

191 1.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> Lockwood is one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

most ancient surnames found on English<br />

records in the County Yorkshire, record<br />

being found as early as the fourteenth<br />

century. In the beginning the spelling<br />

<strong>of</strong> the name differed and in many instances<br />

it is found spelled Lokewood and<br />

Lockewood. The derivation <strong>of</strong> the name<br />

is from Locke or Lock, referring to a<br />

dwelling in or by an enclosure or confine<br />

—and wod, which is the old English form<br />

<strong>of</strong> wood. Hence a remote ancestor dwelt<br />

in a clearing or by the side <strong>of</strong> a large<br />

wood, and derived his surname from the<br />

location <strong>of</strong> his home.<br />

(I) Robert Lockwood, the ancestor <strong>of</strong><br />

the family, came to New England about<br />

1630, and settled in Watertown, Massachusetts.<br />

He was made a freeman, March<br />

9, 1636-37, and in 1646 removed to Fair-<br />

field, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, where he died in 1658.<br />

On May 20, 1652, he was made a freeman<br />

there. His wife, whose Christian name<br />

was Susannah, died<br />

in Greenwich.<br />

December 23, 1660,<br />

(II) Lieutenant Gershom Lockwood,<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Robert and Susannah Lockwood,<br />

was born September 6, 1643, 'n Water-<br />

town, Massachusetts, and died March 12,<br />

1718, in Greenwich, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. He removed<br />

to Greenwich with his father at<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> nine, and was one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

twenty-seven proprietors there. A car-<br />

penter by trade, he also held many positions<br />

<strong>of</strong> trust. Lieutenant Lockwood<br />

married Lady Ann Millington, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lord Millington, <strong>of</strong> England, who had<br />

come to America in search <strong>of</strong> her lover, a<br />

British army <strong>of</strong>ficer. In 1660 her parents<br />

sent her a large oak chest, carved and<br />

strongly built.<br />

(III) Gershom (2) Lockwood, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Gershom (1) and Ann (Millington) Lockwood,<br />

was born in 1708. He married<br />

Mary Ferris, born in 1708, died February<br />

9, 1796.<br />

Gershom (2) and Mary (Ferris) Lock-
