He was a deacon <strong>of</strong> the church<br />
for ten or twelve years, and for several<br />
years superintendent <strong>of</strong> the Sunday<br />
school. He was almost invariably in his<br />
place <strong>of</strong> worship, no matter what the circumstances<br />
which might readily have excused<br />
him. Forgetful <strong>of</strong> himself, and<br />
always ready to do a kind act, he carried<br />
his religion into his social and business<br />
relations in a way that commanded re-<br />
spect everywhere. The world has too<br />
few men like him, and his passing occa-<br />
sioned widespread and sincere regret.<br />

born April 23, 1668, died young; David,<br />

(II) David Austin, son <strong>of</strong> John and<br />
Mary (Atwater) Austin, was born February<br />
23, 1670. He lived in New Haven,<br />
<strong>Connecticut</strong>. He and his wife, Abigail<br />
Austin, were the parents <strong>of</strong>: Abigail, born<br />

Sarah, Mercy, Eli Beecher, <strong>of</strong> whom fur-<br />
ther.<br />
(V) Eli Beecher Austin, son <strong>of</strong> Jonathan<br />
and Sarah (Beecher) Austin, was<br />
a resident <strong>of</strong> New Haven, <strong>Connecticut</strong>.<br />
He married Grace Maria Beecher (see<br />
Beecher VII).<br />
(VI) Henry Cotton Austin, son <strong>of</strong> Eli<br />
Beecher and Grace Maria (Beecher) Aus-<br />
tin, was born in New Haven, <strong>Connecticut</strong>,<br />
April 16, 1837, and died May 16, 1911. He<br />
was educated in the public schools, Hop-<br />
kins Grammar School, and a private<br />
school in Pomfret, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. Ill<br />
health caused him to seek more favorable<br />
climate in the West, and upon his return<br />
he located in Medway, Massachusetts,<br />
where he became a retail grocer. Subse-<br />
quently, under the firm name <strong>of</strong> Colcord<br />
& Austin, Mr. Austin was associated with<br />
Rufus K. Colcord, who was later governor<br />
