a member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Burgesses. He<br />

is also a member <strong>of</strong> the following frater-<br />

nities : Beta Theta Pi, Theta Nu Epsilon,<br />

Skull and Serpent.<br />

Mr. Hoyt married (first) Anna Crenan,<br />

and has two children: Elizabeth and Justus.<br />

He married (second) Mrs. Anna<br />

Finch, daughter <strong>of</strong> John Rudolph, <strong>of</strong> New<br />

York City.<br />

ROBINS, George H.,<br />

Master Builder.<br />

The surname <strong>of</strong> Robins is very old and<br />

is found frequently in England and is derived<br />

from the personal name Robin. The<br />

ancestors <strong>of</strong> George H. Robins lived for<br />

many years in Hertfordshire and it was<br />

there that the grandfather <strong>of</strong> Mr. Robins,<br />

Thomas Robins, was probably born. His<br />

father, Leonard Robins, was born in Pun-<br />

sel, near Ross, Herefordshire. He was a<br />

mason by occupation and for many years<br />

was in business for himself. He married<br />

Ann, daughter <strong>of</strong> William Sims, a native<br />

<strong>of</strong> the same place and they were the parents<br />

<strong>of</strong> ten children. George H. Robins<br />

and his brother, Thomas, are the only two<br />

<strong>of</strong> the family to come to America. The<br />

others who make their home in England<br />

are: Mary; Bessie; Orlando; Philip;<br />

Edith ; Ann ; Amily.<br />

George H. Robins grew to manhood in<br />

England and learned the trade <strong>of</strong> mason<br />

with his father, remaining associated with<br />

him until he was twenty-two years <strong>of</strong> age.<br />

Previous to coming to America in 1890<br />

Mr. Robins was employed in various English<br />

towns among them being Hastingsin-Sussex<br />

and Pontypridd, in Wales.<br />

In 1890 Mr. Robins located in Norwalk<br />

and there he has been very successful.<br />

For two years Mr. Robins worked as a<br />

journeyman and then started in business<br />

for himself. Mr. Robins has met with<br />

success in his business and at times em-<br />

ploys as many as a dozen men. The Danbury<br />

Depot was built by him and he has<br />

built many large handsome residences,<br />

one at Seagate, Coney Island, and one at<br />

Mountainville, New York, being espe-<br />

cially worthy <strong>of</strong> mention. Much <strong>of</strong> the<br />

work is in Norwalk and immediate vi-<br />

cinity although the high standard <strong>of</strong> his<br />

workmanship has reached far and wide<br />

and he has <strong>of</strong>ten received contracts from<br />

those living a considerable distance from<br />

Norwalk.<br />

Mr. Robins married (first) Emiline,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> John Drew, <strong>of</strong> Conderford,<br />

England, and they were the parents <strong>of</strong><br />

seven children, four <strong>of</strong> whom grew to<br />

maturity. They are: i. Edith, wife <strong>of</strong><br />

Frederick Sperry and the mother <strong>of</strong> Henry,<br />

Dorothy and Harriet Sperry. They<br />

reside in Woodbridge, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. 2.<br />

Mary Annie, married Charles Booth, <strong>of</strong><br />

Bethany, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. 3. Ethel. 4. Wilfred,<br />

married Sarah Cloud. The mother<br />

<strong>of</strong> these children died March 5, 1914. She<br />

was a member <strong>of</strong> the Baptist Church for<br />

many years.<br />

Mr. Robins married (second) Mrs. Annie,<br />

widow <strong>of</strong> Loren Fillow, and daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thomas Pritchard. The latter was<br />

born in Lancashire, England, and mar-<br />

ried Maria Barnaby. He was a patternmarker<br />

which occupation he followed in<br />

London until coming to America. Subsequently<br />

he located in Portland, Connec-<br />

ticut, and followed his trade there as long<br />

as he lived. He was a member <strong>of</strong> the Ma-<br />

sonic lodge there.<br />

Mr. Robins is a member <strong>of</strong> the Sons <strong>of</strong><br />

St. George and with his wife attends the<br />

Baptist church, <strong>of</strong> Norwalk.<br />
