7, 1756, and died March 20, 1827. He was<br />

twenty-one years <strong>of</strong> age when he went<br />

into the Revolutionary War as a surgeon,<br />

and served from May 15, 1777, to September<br />

1, 1780. After the war, Dr. Willard<br />

located in Albany, New York, where he<br />

engaged in practice. He was at different<br />

times a resident <strong>of</strong> Stillwater and Albany,<br />

New York, and Montreal, Canada. Dr.<br />

Willard married, July 8, 1778, Katherine<br />

Livingston, daughter <strong>of</strong> John L. Livingston,<br />

and a member <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the famous<br />

patroon families <strong>of</strong> New York. The Livingstons<br />

were residents <strong>of</strong> Albany, and<br />

there Mrs. Katherine (Livingston) Wil-<br />

lard died, January 26, 1827. The family<br />

were members <strong>of</strong> the Presbyterian church<br />

for many years.<br />

(VIII) John Willard, son <strong>of</strong> Dr. Elias<br />

and Katherine (Livingston) Willard, was<br />

born at Stillwater, New York, March 10,<br />

1 781, and died at Yonkers, New York,<br />

about i860. He was a man <strong>of</strong> excellent<br />

education, and spent most <strong>of</strong> his life in<br />

the banking business. For several years<br />

he served as deputy treasurer <strong>of</strong> New<br />

York. His health failed him and he was<br />

an invalid for some years.<br />

Mr. Willard married, April 7, 181 1,<br />

Mary Ann Lawrence, daughter <strong>of</strong> David<br />

and Anna (Jenkins) Lawrence, originally<br />

from Nantucket. They lived in Hudson,<br />

New York, for some time, and were members<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Presbyterian church. The fa-<br />

ther <strong>of</strong> Anna (Jenkins) Lawrence was the<br />

first mayor <strong>of</strong> Hudson. John and Mary<br />

Ann (Lawrence) Willard were the par-<br />

ents <strong>of</strong> Edward Kirk Willard, a sketch <strong>of</strong><br />

whom follows.<br />

New York. At the age <strong>of</strong> thirteen he<br />

went to New York City and began to earn<br />

his living as a boy in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> a Wall<br />

street broker. He was possessed <strong>of</strong> determination<br />

to master the business, and<br />

in this he was signally successful. He<br />

became one <strong>of</strong> the most successful bankers<br />

and brokers <strong>of</strong> his day ; after his marriage<br />

he went to Chicago, where he<br />

engaged in business for many years. Pre-<br />

vious to 1873 he returned to Wall street,<br />

but the latter year proved a disastrous one<br />

to Mr. Willard from a financial stand-<br />

point, as it did to thousands <strong>of</strong> others.<br />

On April 15, 1857, Mr. Willard married<br />

Elizabeth Willard, daughter <strong>of</strong> John and<br />

Margaret (Stanbury) Willard, <strong>of</strong> New<br />

York City. Elizabeth (Willard) Willard<br />

was a descendant <strong>of</strong> George Willard,<br />

brother <strong>of</strong> Simon Willard, the ancestor <strong>of</strong><br />

Edward Kirk Willard. Thus two distinguished<br />

Willard lines were united, both<br />

<strong>of</strong> which trace to Richard Willard, <strong>of</strong><br />

Horsmonden, England. Mr. and Mrs.<br />

Willard were the parents <strong>of</strong> six children<br />

1. Kate Livingston, born January 13,<br />

1859, died September 25, 1898; married<br />

James Edward Brush, <strong>of</strong> New York City.<br />

2. Emma Allison, twin <strong>of</strong> Kate L., died<br />

July 22, 191 1. 3. Frances, born July 18,<br />

i860, died August 24, 1907. 4. James<br />

Struthers, born September 16, 1863, lives<br />

in Greenwich. 5. Margaret Stanbury,<br />

born May 12, 1865; sne married (first) in<br />

1894, Worthington C. Miner, <strong>of</strong> Buffalo;<br />

Mr. Miner died in 1903; she married (second)<br />

in 1917, Henry Lorillard Cammann,<br />

<strong>of</strong> Greenwich. 6. Louise Bowers, whose<br />

sketch follows. For many years Mr. Wil-<br />

lard has been in ill health, and has retired<br />

from all active interests.<br />
