April 28, 1703, Abigail Pineon, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thomas and Mary Pineon, <strong>of</strong> New<br />

Haven. She died January 9, 1743.<br />

(III) Caleb Candee, their son, was<br />

born in West Haven, about 1722, and died<br />

in 1764. He married Lois Mallory, and<br />

they resided in Oxford, where Mrs. Can-<br />

dee died, in 1790. They were the parents<br />

<strong>of</strong> Nehemiah Candee, <strong>of</strong> whom further.<br />

(IV) Nehemiah Candee was born April<br />

14, 1758, in Oxford Parish, and died Au-<br />

gust 17, 1834. He was a farmer by oc-<br />

cupation. He married, December 6, 1780,<br />

Content Woodruff, daughter <strong>of</strong> David and<br />

Esther (Clark) Woodruff, and a de-<br />

scendant <strong>of</strong> Matthew Woodruff, a pioneer<br />

settler <strong>of</strong> Farmington, <strong>Connecticut</strong>. She<br />

was born in Derby, July 5, 1762, and died<br />

November 14, 1838.<br />

(V) David Woodruff Candee, their<br />

son, was born December 5, 1783, in Oxford.<br />

When a small child he removed<br />

with his parents to what was called the<br />

"new settlement," Galway, Saratoga<br />

county, New York, and taught school at<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> sixteen years, later becoming<br />

a clerk. He was a first lieutenant, then<br />

captain <strong>of</strong> the Light Infantry, 1807-1813,<br />

and his regiment took part in the battle<br />

<strong>of</strong> Plattsburg in the War <strong>of</strong> 1812. He<br />

served as a member <strong>of</strong> the Legislature in<br />

1820, and was postmaster and justice <strong>of</strong><br />

the peace. Captain Candee was an ear-<br />

nest Christian, and possessed a natural<br />

gift for music ; he led the church choir<br />

for many years. He joined the First<br />

Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, New<br />

York, January 14, 1816, and at his death<br />

was the oldest member. Captain Candee<br />

married (first) Elizabeth Ostrom, born<br />

June 8, 1789, and died March 30, 1822.<br />

She was a granddaughter <strong>of</strong> a Revolutionary<br />

captain under Washington, and<br />

after her death he married (second) at<br />

Amsterdam, January 3, 1824, Charity Os-<br />

trom, born December 29, 1796, died May<br />

30, 1865.<br />

(VI) Julius Alonzo Candee, son <strong>of</strong><br />

David W. and Elizabeth (Ostrom) Candee,<br />

was born in Amsterdam, Montgomery<br />

county, New York, May 30, 1814. He<br />

was a dealer in building materials in New<br />

York City for many years. He married<br />

(first) May 10, 1847, Caroline Hanks, and<br />

she died in January, 1850. She was the<br />

mother <strong>of</strong> Mary Candee, who became the<br />

wife <strong>of</strong> Dr. Sc<strong>of</strong>ield, as above noted.<br />

SCOFIELD, Walter Lewis,<br />

Physician.<br />

(IX) Walter Lewis Sc<strong>of</strong>ield, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Dr. Walter K. and Mary (Candee) Sco-<br />

field (q. v.), was born July 26, 1882, in<br />

San Francisco, California, and was only a<br />

small lad when his parents returned to<br />

establish a home in Stamford. He gradu-<br />

ated from the Stamford High School in<br />

1903, and then entered the medical department<br />

<strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Vermont<br />

from which he was graduated with the<br />

degree <strong>of</strong> M. D. in 1907. Six months sub-<br />

sequent to that time were spent in the<br />

Lying-in Hospital in New York City,<br />

after which he was engaged in post-grad-<br />

uate work for several months at Randall's<br />

Island, where he did special work in ob-<br />

stetrics. Dr. Sc<strong>of</strong>ield then returned to<br />

Stamford where he began private practice.<br />

He has taken his place among the prominent<br />

physicians <strong>of</strong> Fairfield county, and<br />

is held in high esteem in medical circles.<br />

Dr. Sc<strong>of</strong>ield is a member <strong>of</strong> the Stamford<br />

Hospital staff; <strong>of</strong> the Stamford, Fairfield<br />

County, and <strong>Connecticut</strong> Medical soci-<br />

eties, and <strong>of</strong> the American Medical Asso-<br />

ciation. Fraternally, he is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

Union Lodge, No. 5, Free and Accepted<br />

Masons ; Puritan Lodge, Independent<br />

Order <strong>of</strong> Odd Fellows ; Junior Order <strong>of</strong><br />

United American Mechanics; Foresters
