y three <strong>of</strong> the brothers, and under the<br />

leadership <strong>of</strong> John Lees, they were taken<br />

on a foreign tour that included France,<br />

Russia, Spain and Egypt. After the<br />

death <strong>of</strong> Mr. Lees, three other brothers<br />

joined the troupe and their success continued.<br />

The following is an extract from<br />

the New York "World:" "In its later<br />

period, when the second generation was<br />

taking the place <strong>of</strong> the original members<br />

on the stage, the responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the<br />

company were divided as follows : William<br />

lon managed their plays, and George Han-<br />

lon was stage manager. At one time<br />

George Hanlon, then in the prime <strong>of</strong> his<br />

powers, left the stage and devoted himself<br />

to the Christian ministry for fourteen<br />

years, afterward returning to theatrical<br />

work. The headquarters <strong>of</strong> the Hanlons<br />

were at Cohasset, Massachusetts, where,<br />

in a large seven-story building, they pre-<br />

pared their acts for the following season."<br />

In 1870 the Hanlon Brothers entered the<br />

pantomimic field and starred for several<br />

seasons in "Fantasma" and "Superba,"<br />

famous productions at that time.<br />

Edward Hanlon, father <strong>of</strong> Dr. Hanlon,<br />

married Frances Kail. He was the father<br />

<strong>of</strong> five children, four girls and one son,<br />

among them :<br />

When Dr. Hanlon was six years old his<br />

parents took him with their theatrical<br />

company to England and there the boy<br />

was educated under private tutors, and<br />

was in different countries in Europe until<br />

he was about fourteen years <strong>of</strong> age. On<br />

their return to America, Dr. Hanlon entered<br />

the public schools <strong>of</strong> Cambridge,<br />

Massachusetts, and matriculated in Lawence<br />

Scientific School at Harvard. After<br />

six months there, he went to Boston and<br />

was graduated from the Boston University<br />

Medical School as a homoeopathic<br />

physician in 1906. The following year he<br />

spent in post-graduate work at the Hahnemann<br />

Medical School. After finishing<br />

the year he remained eighteen months in<br />

the Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia.<br />

At the end <strong>of</strong> that time, Dr. Hanlon<br />

went to England and spent altogether<br />

fourteen months overseas, alternating six<br />

months in the London General Hospital,<br />

then to the Paris General Hospital. His<br />

first practice in America was in Atlantic<br />

City, and in 1910 he came to Greenwich,<br />

where he has since been engaged in gen-<br />

eral practice and was a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

staff <strong>of</strong> the Greenwich Hospital for the<br />

last six years <strong>of</strong> its existence.<br />

Dr. Hanlon is a member <strong>of</strong> the Greenwich<br />

Medical Society ; the <strong>Connecticut</strong><br />

Homoeopathic Medical Society ; the American<br />

Institute <strong>of</strong> Homoeopathy ; the New<br />

York Academy <strong>of</strong> Theoretical Science<br />

and Alpha Sigma fraternity. He affiliates<br />

with the Masonic order, having been<br />

made a Mason at Cohasset.<br />

Dr. Hanlon married Mary B. Decker,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Benezette Decker, and they<br />

are the parents <strong>of</strong> a daughter, Martha,<br />

born October 20, 1914. Dr. Hanlon and<br />

his wife attend Christ Episcopal Church.<br />

world to men who have made their way<br />

to success through their own efforts in<br />

which there is recognition <strong>of</strong> character,<br />

and <strong>of</strong> those other dominant qualities<br />

which have made success possible.<br />

Charles B. Kunes, a leading contractor<br />

and builder <strong>of</strong> Norwalk, <strong>Connecticut</strong>, has<br />

achieved success through his own efforts,<br />

and his career is one in which he can take<br />

just pride.<br />
