used to measure the readability level of the
kids health-websites identified by a number
of search engines. Although, the recommendations
is to maintain readability level of 6th
grade for health information, the study finds
that less than 37% of kids health-website
are really readable for kids.
Assembly Language Translator
Presenter: Jingjing Ren (Santa Clara
University)
When learning a new assembly
language, it is helpful for students
to use a known assembly language as
reference, since instruction sets of different
computer architectures (Intel, MIPS, etc.)
have distinct differences and similarities.
This website can help students learn
different instruction sets and processor
methodologies by accepting assembly code
of a known language, translating it into code
of the new language, and showing the cycle
count of each.
Assisted Integration and
Reconstruction of Large Scale 3D
Models
Presenter: Anna Topol (York University)
Advancements in computer processing
power and in image processing
algorithms have increased the popularity
of vision-based sensors as a means of
obtaining 3D models of complex objects and
environments. To obtain a single model of
a large scale environment multiple smaller
scans are collected that need to be merged
together. We present an assisted alignment
algorithm applied to model feature and
transformation constraints interactively
defined by the user.
Association Mapping across
Populations via Multi-Task Regression
Presenter: Kriti Puniyani (Carnegie Mellon
University)
Association mapping is the problem of
finding genotype markers associated
with a given phenotype, eg. markers predic-
tive of say, diabetes. Different populations
may or may not have the same genetic
causes for the phenotype. We propose a
regression based framework that uses joint
inference across multiple populations to find
relevant associated markers for each population.
We outperform existing methods on
simulated data and the lactase-persistence
phenotype on the WTCCC dataset.
Automatic Generation of Language
Quizzes for ESL Learners Based on
Video Transcripts
Presenter: Aoi Yoshida (Tsuda College)
The rise of the Internet has enabled ESL
learners to watch authentic videos in
English more easily than before. Nonetheless,
learning materials utilizing them
are not enough since the development of
them takes much cost and time. We have
designed the algorithm that automatically
generates multiple-choices based on video
transcripts. By embedding this algorithm
in COOLL, Tsuda College’s online learning
system, learning materials can be efficiently
provided for ESL learners.
Automatic User Status Update in Closed
Collaborative Environments
Presenter: Abayomi King (University of
Toronto)
One of the most frequently sought after
pieces of information among software
developers is awareness about co-workers.
Awareness enables team members to
contact each other to gain information such
as clarification about design decisions.
Our work investigates how collaborative
platforms can automatically glean user
activity information in order to promote team
awareness and support collaboration over
distance. Specifically, we look at automatic
status updates in collaborative software
development environments.
Body-based Interaction for Desktop
Games
Presenter: Mara G. Silva (Virginia
Polytechnic Institute)
We are investigating the benefits of
adding body-based interaction to
complement keyboard and mouse interaction
in desktop gaming. We present a proofof-concept
implementation of body-based
navigation for the game World of Warcraft,
a formative evaluation, and design considerations
for this type of interaction. Our observations
provide evidence that this approach
can help players perform more tasks at the
same time and can be attractive and helpful
to new players.
Brain Signals instead of Questions:
Building an Adaptive/Interactive
Mobile Learning System
Presenter: Samah Gad (Virginia
Polytechnic Institute)
We present an approach for adapting
learning materials in a mobile
learning environment based on the user
emotion. The emotion will be detected using
an Electroencephalography (EEG) sensor. We
describe in details our emotion detection
approach and the adaptation technique used
to adapt learning materials. Our hypothesis
is that the proposed approach will improve
the adaptation of e-learning materials in
mobile learning environments.
Bridging the Technology Gap: An
Undergraduate Student Experience
in Developing an Electronic Medical
Record for Physician Volunteers
Providing Care to the Economically
Deprived in India
Presenter: Arshia Khan (College of St.
Scholastica)
In spite of this tremendous growth in technology
in India, the low income population
does not benefit. Specialists on Wheels for
the Economically Deprived (SOWED) is an
organization which provides health care to
the underprivileged and deprived areas in
