2 Memorable Moments Alf arrived to the Club 12 years ago; with a mandate to improve service levels, tighten all internal controls and processes, and be entrepreneurial in thought. When Alf arrived, the Club was doing approximately $700,000 in gross revenue in the F&B department. Today we are over $3,000,000. Alf has worked with very dedicated people, and a team that has been able to do amazing things out of a kitchen that is truly designed for half the load. Alf as the leader of the F&B team has had his signature in most of the developments, improvements and results that come out of the department. Alf will be missed by both members and staff alike, and on behalf of the Club, we would like to thank him for all he has done for the organization and wish him all the best in the future. c a l g a r y w i n t e r c l u b . c o m | D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 0 . J a n u a r y 2 0 1 1 Duane DeJager Calgary Winter Club member Duane DeJager placed 1st in both Light Weight and Master’s divisions at two natural body building competitions in October, collecting 4 awards. Duane has been training hard in the Fitness Centre at the Calgary Winter Club and entered his first competitions with INBF and IDFA, both drug-free body building federations. Congratulations Duane all of your dedication and hard work paid off!! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend Season’s Greetings to all members and the best to everyone for 2011. The new year will usher in our much anticipated expansion at the Club. Your Construction and Strategic Planning Committees have been hard at work getting the final approval for the Development Permit. We have also made changes that will make the future work in Phase Two and Three add so much more value to our Club. Our mid-February start date is coming up fast and I must ask now for your anticipated patience and understanding. For anyone who has renovated or built, the disruption to services, noise and dust will come as no surprise. Your Board has pledged to keep the lines of communication open so that when rescheduling and problems are foreseen, you will be notified by e-mail and through Club Connections. Watch your inbox as our Construction Team will be providing many updates. On October 23 rd , the Board and senior management met for a day-long retreat at the Club. The theme of the retreat was service and how it can be improved in all areas of the Club. Many great ideas were offered and I was impressed with how all members of the team brought forward excellent proposals to make the Club an even better facility. Both Board and Management realize that members expect a high level of service. We were fortunate to have Ed McLaughlin, CEO of Vancouver’s Hollyburn Club give a presentation. His club has just completed an expansion and he was good enough to share many insights that will hopefully make our project run smoothly. Another suggestion that came out of the retreat was the idea of mini surveys. In the past, the Club has done major surveys, but usually every three years at most. I know that we can all be inundated with surveys, but please take the time to respond. It is hoped that hot button areas, like Food and Beverage, can be improved by just asking the members on a more regular basis. As of the last week of October, the Selection Committee with the help of the search firm Conroy Ross, has interviewed six candidates for the position of CEO at the Club. Further meetings are scheduled for early November and we hope to soon have the permanent position filled. Thanks to all of those who applied. In the interim, Jan Bloemraad and his senior managers have done an excellent job of conducting “business as usual” at the Club. This relatively young group has many excellent ideas to offer. Also, effective November 1, 2010, Alf Saunders resigned as Food and Beverage Manager. I would like to thank Alf for his years of service to the Club and wish him well in his future endeavours. You may have noticed the new menu at the 818 Bistro. Why not make a dinner reservation if you haven’t been there for a while? Say hi and pass on any suggestions to Chef Nancy. It is the goal of this Board to make the Club’s facilities a member’s first choice when it comes to dining. The message came through loud and clear at the AGM that change is needed. I hope when our permanent CEO is in place that we can conduct a thorough examination of the facility with member input. To that end, I will be asking members to volunteer for an ad hoc committee to improve this important area of the Club. The Board wants to hear from you, so stay tuned. Finally, as our membership grows, we run the risk of becoming a large, impersonal institution. If I were to have a New Year’s resolution, it would be to make our Club more like the homey, family-orientated facility of days gone by. Don’t walk down the hall with your head down. Say hi to fellow members and make new members feel welcome. The atmosphere at the Winter Club is only as good as we make it. When our expansion is complete, we will have a wonderful building. Let’s work together to make it an equally wonderful gathering place! See you at the Club!
