KENDO<br />

Kendo is the martial art and sport of Japanese<br />

Samurai Swordsmanship. Beginning students<br />

start with the basic techniques of Kendo and<br />

as they continue will learn more advanced<br />

techniques along with discipline, culture and<br />

etiquette of Kendo and Japan. Wooden swords<br />

are available from instructor for $23. Class fee<br />

does not include additional equipment cost for<br />

continuing and advanced students.<br />

EARTH DAY - APRIL 21<br />

Calling all volunteers! Join us for a day of<br />

appreciation of our parks! <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> is<br />

looking for people of all ages to join us in<br />

beautifying our parks. Anything from pruning<br />

bushes, picking up litter, to digging out invasive<br />

plants! We can use all the hands that we can<br />

get! Call Leah Fraine at 253-835-6926 for park<br />

locations if you are interested in volunteering!<br />

RED, WHITE & BLUES FESTIVAL<br />

Celebrate July 4th with a spectacular fireworks<br />

show, musical entertainment, fun family<br />

activities and lots more! The free event begins at<br />

6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 4th at Celebration<br />

Park, 1095 S 324th in <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong>. Onsite parking<br />

opens at 5:00pm. Bring chairs and blankets for<br />

seating. Activities include live music, a hot dog<br />

eating contest, face painting, interactive arts<br />

family games and a performance on the main<br />

stage by Roberto the Magnificent! Fireworks<br />

SUMMER SOUNDS @ THE BEACH<br />

Grab your blanket and a picnic and join us at the<br />

beach for our annual concert series at Steel Lake<br />

Park! Every Wednesday from 7-8pm, we will<br />

be dancing in the park grooving to fun beats<br />

of local artists. This year’s series brings a great<br />

variety of music from big band to classic rock!<br />

Sponsorship opportunities are available. See<br />

flyer on page 14 for more information.<br />

Youth Special Events<br />

HOOKED ON FISHING - JUNE 2<br />

Join us for our 25th annual fishing event for kids.<br />

Kids between the ages of 2 and 12 can fish from<br />

the dock (into a HUGE net) at Steel Lake Park &<br />

bring home a delicious trout dinner. All fishing<br />

equipment provided by the Save Our Fish<br />

chapter of Puget Sound Anglers. Guaranteed<br />

to catch a fish. Call 253-835-6900 to register.<br />

Hooked on Fishing - 11:10 AM<br />

Join us for our 22nd annual fishing event for<br />

kids. Kids, between the ages of 2 and 12 can<br />

fish from the dock (into a HUGE net) at Steel<br />

Lake Park & bring home a delicious trout<br />

dinner. All fishing equipment provided by the<br />

Save Our Fish chapter of Puget Sound Anglers.<br />

Guaranteed to catch a fish. Call 253-835-6900<br />

to register. Cost is $3.50 per child.<br />

KID ESCAPE (PARENT’S NIGHT OUT)<br />

Parent’s Escape for a night out on the town, and<br />

Kid’s Escape to the <strong>Federal</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>Community</strong><br />

<strong>Center</strong> and everyone has fun! The cheapest<br />

babysitting in town with fun activities for all.<br />

Kid Escape is offered for kids ages K - 5th grade.<br />

Dinner will be served, pool time, arts & craft and<br />

then a movie. Those who register the day of the<br />

event will be subject to a $3 late registration fee.<br />

A day of summer fun for kids ages 2 - 12 at Steel<br />

Lake Park, 2410 312th St. 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm.<br />

Activities include sandcastle building, chalk it<br />

up contest, inflatable bouncer, entertainment,<br />

crafts, music, toddler tent and face painting. Free<br />

admission, though tickets are required for some<br />

activities. Concessions are available for purchase.<br />
