COMMENTS:.................................This is Asia’s largest rose garden. Named after India’s former President,<br />

the late Shri Zakir Hussain, the garden was established in 1967 under the<br />

guidance <strong>of</strong> Dr. M.S. Randhawa, Chandigarh’s first Chief Commissioner<br />

and an ardent rose lover. In addition to the roses, emphasis was also given<br />

to trees <strong>of</strong> medicinal value and other unique specimen trees.<br />

COMMENTS:.................................This garden was begun in 1760 by Hyder Ali and continued to flourish<br />

under its subsequent patron, Tipu Sultan, and then under the British. It is a<br />

240 acre garden located in a residential area in the heart <strong>of</strong> the city.<br />

GARDEN NAME: ..........................Nishat Garden<br />

ADDRESS: .....................................On the banks <strong>of</strong> Dal Lake in Kashmir<br />

COMMENTS:.................................This is the largest <strong>of</strong> the Mughal gardens in Kashmir and is also known as<br />

the “Garden <strong>of</strong> Bliss”. It has terraces representing each <strong>of</strong> the Zodiac signs<br />

and a water channel flowing in the middle <strong>of</strong> the garden.<br />

GARDEN NAME: ..........................Shalimar Garden (Shalimar Bagh)galore<br />

ADDRESS: .....................................Srinagar in Kashmir<br />

COMMENTS:.................................This garden was created in 1616 by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir for his<br />

wife Nur Jahan. It is built in four terraces and has a traditional water<br />

channel running down the middle. One terrace is dedicated to just roses.<br />

The garden is one <strong>of</strong> the premier attractions in Kashmir, and a sound and<br />

light show is put on each evening during the May to October tourist season.<br />
