INDUSTRY UPDATES Gensler, Fiberstars Announce JV For Green Lighting Technology In the first joint venture with a manufacturer in the company’s history, architecture/design giant Gensler has announced that it will cooperatively launch the EFO Fiber Optic Lighting System with Fiberstars Inc. Gensler will act as “design consultant” to advance the technology as a practical application for commercial use.The technology is expected to enable greatly reduced energy consumption. Ranked in various industry surveys as the largest interior design firm and third largest architecture firm in the world, Gensler has been approached countless times by manufacturers over the years to officially collaborate on a product launch, says Jeffrey Brite, director of product design for Gensler, but hasn’t done so until now. EFO is designed as a direct replacement for recessed ceiling downlights, track and display case lighting, and is particularly applicable in retail settings, commercial buildings, supermarkets, museums, pools/spas, as well as for government and military uses. “Gensler has long been at the forefront of the movement for green design, and it is our goal to Incandescent Lamps Celebrate 125th Anniversary embrace and foster technological developments that can help our clients be more environmentally responsible,” said Arthur Gensler, Gensler’s chairman. “The Fiberstars EFO technology presents a remarkable opportunity to increase energy efficiencies for companies and help retailers meet new energy regulations. As designers, we felt our knowledge of end-user needs, and our ability to translate them into functional applications, could help businesses adopt this green lighting solution.” The Gensler-Fiberstars team is positioning the EFO technology as the “first significant breakthrough in commercial lighting since compact fluorescent lamps and MR-16 halogen lamps became commonplace over the past 25 years.” Meanwhile, Fiberstars has been awarded more than $11 million from the U.S. Government in DARPA contracts, based on the EFO technology.The DARPA program seeks to develop the highest efficiency interior light system in use. According to the company, near-future generations of EFO will be capable of delivering the same light, using less energy, than existing fluorescent systems in ships and in other military applications. Contrary to popular belief, Thomas Edison didn’t invent the incandescent light bulb, but rather he improved up on it. In 1879, using lower current electricity, a small, carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe, he was able to produce a reliable long-lasting source of light. On October 21, 1879, the first commercial practical incandescent lamp completed a 40-hour duration test at Edison’s Menlo Park Laboratory in New Jersey.
