New Delhi, Oct. 1: The VHP received a body blow when human resources develop ment minister Murli<br />

Manohar, known for his hard line, snubbed the outfit for its repeated tirade against madrasas. Mr Joshi<br />

asked VHP leader Ashok Singhal to "produce evidence that all madrasas were involved in anti-national<br />

activities so that action can be taken against them." Earlier, BJP chief M. Venkaiah Naidu had<br />

attacked Mr Singhal for his comments against Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. He had referred to<br />

Mr Vajpayee as "anti-Hindu" and attacked him for his "failure to contain terrorism." (Asian Age 2.10.02)<br />

Fresh violence in Gujarat (7)<br />

AHMEDABAD, OCT. 2. Several parts of Gujarat witnessed vi olence on the Gandhi Jayanti Day today<br />

forcing police to open fire in Bhavnagar and burst teargas shells in Vadod-ara and Piplod town of Anand<br />

district. At least one person was in jured in firing in the Prabhudas colony of Bhavnagar in the Saurashtra<br />

region, home constituency of the BJP State president, Rajendrasinh Rana, after disturbances broke out<br />

over a non-issue. Tension spread to the adjoining 'chawls' and members of both the communities indulged<br />

in stone-throwing. Seven per sons were injured, which forced police to burst teargas shells. They later fired<br />

more than 15 rounds to disperse the clashing mobs. (Hindu 3.10.02)<br />

Naroda-Patiya carnage accused in custody (7)<br />

AHMEDABAD, OCTOBER 2: ASHOK Sindhi, who was allegedly involved in the Naroda-Patiya massacre,<br />

has been remanded to police custody till October 4. Officials of the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) had<br />

arrested him from Naroda area and presented him before the Metropolitan Magistrate of Court No 11 on<br />

Tuesday. Sindhi’s involvement in the massacre came to light after cellular phone dealer Nadeem Saiyeed<br />

filed a complaint in this regard with the DCB on May 19. (<strong>Indian</strong> Exp 3.10.02)<br />

FBI loses plot, tracks hundreds of Muslims (7)<br />

Washington, Oct. 6: The Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to make an open book of the lives<br />

of hundreds of young, mostly Muslim men in the United States, in the belief that Al Qaeda-trained<br />

terrorists remain in this country, awaiting instructions to attack. Senior law enforcement offi cials say the<br />

surveillance campaign is being carried out by every major-FBI office in the country and involves 24-hour<br />

monitoring of the suspects' tele phone calls, email messages and Internet use, as well as scrutiny of their<br />

credit card charges, their travel and their visits to neigh bourhood gathering places, including mosques.<br />

TN conversion ban draws applause, scorn (7)<br />

Chennai, Oct. 6: There have been mixed reactions in Tamil Nadu to an ordinance issued by the<br />

Jayalalitha government1 to ban religious conver sion. While the moderates and the lib erals have dubbed it<br />

as "draconian," the pro-Hindu outfits such as the RSS and the BJP 'welcomed it as "timely" in the context<br />

of the increasing inci dents of religious conversions in the state. The_seer r of the Kancheepuram Mutt,<br />

Shri Jayendra Saraswati, has welcomed the ordinance. In a state ment issued from the Mutt in<br />

Kancheepuram, about 100 km from Chennai, Shri Jayendra Saraswati said the ordinance when enacted<br />

into a legislation would help in fostering peace, harmony and unity in our society. (Asian Age 7.10.02)<br />

Communal riots hit Baroda, 2 hurt (7)<br />

AHMEDABAD, OCT. 6. Communal violence erupted at Dabhoi in the Baroda district of Gujarat as two<br />

groups clashed and indulged in arson. The police opened fire to quell rioting, leaving two persons injured<br />

on Sunday. Trouble started after Muslims were asked to withhold their programme of constructing a wall<br />

around Lalshah Pirdargh which was damaged during post-Godhra riots. (Asian Age 7.10.02)<br />
