Ahmedabad may see a Bhopal rerun (7)
Ahmedabad, April 2: IF THE recent trend of attacks on industrial estates here continues, Ahmedabad
could see the kind of tragedy that hit Bhopal in 1984. About half-a-dozen industrial units in the city have
been attacked in the last 10 days and many of them are chemical factories, which, if attacked, could send
out toxic fumes on a large scale.
Since Gujarat produces one-fifth of chemicals and ancillary products — including paints, plastics and
pharmaceuticals -there are thousands of storage and processing facilities dealing with hazardous
chemicals, especially around Ahmedabad. "We shudder to think of the consequences if any of the
godowns or units are set on fire by miscreants," said the owner of a chemical unit. (Hindustan Times
Pamphlets used to provoke Hindus (7)
Ahmedabad, April 3: Inflammatory literature in the form of pamphlets continues to be circuited in
Ahmedabad. Pamphlets urging people to "drive out" members of minority community and "come, let's
unite to form a Hindu Rashtra" are being circulated in in the Old City areas of Ahmedabad. If pamphlets
reading "Jago! Utho Vicharo: Amal Kara Desk Bachavo Dharma bhachavo! Hindustan ko Pakistan mat
banne do (Awake! Arise! Implement! Save the nation and religion! Don't let Hindustan turn into Pakistan)"
are being used to provoke Hindus, others incite Muslims with messages like, "Masjid banakar rahegi, ham
kafiro ko masjid to kya smashan bhee nahi banane denge, har musalman ki khwaish hai (Masjid will be
constructed at any cost; Forget the temple, we will not allow construction of a crematorium also by
atheists. It is the desire of every Muslim)." Many leaflets urge Hindus to pledge not to buy anything from
Muslim-owned shops and also support the boycott of films starring Muslim actors. According to
Intelligence Bureau sources, as many as 20 such pamphlets with provocative literature are reportedly
being circulated in predominantly'Hindu and Muslim areas. (Asian Age 4.4.02)
