Crisis in NDA over Modi (7)
New Delhi, April 9: THE GUJARAT riots have claimed their first victim in the National Democratic
Alliance (NDA). A senior Samata functionary quit his posts on Tuesday evening, protesting the paty’sflip
flop on Narendra Modi. What made matters worse for the NDA was a demand from Ram Vilas Paswan’s
Lok Janshakti Party that Modi should be sacked and President’s rule clamped on Gujarat. A serious
constitutional crisis has arisen in the state, LJP vice president Ramvire Singh Bidhuri said. (Hindustan
Communalclash in Kalyan claims 3 lives (7)
MUMBAI, APRIL 10. An old feud between two persons belonging to different communities led to a fight,
which later resulted in mob violence and arson and claimed the lives of three persons in Kalyan town near
here. Curfew was subsequently imposed in the area. The pattern of violence has assumed a communal
colour even as the Shiv Sena claimed that one of the dead was its man. Efforts were taken to control the
situation to prevent a major communal conflagration because its impact could well be felt elsewhere,
especially in Mumbai which has otherwise been without such incidents for a long time. (Hindu 11.4.02)
Doctors jittery in Muslim areas (7)
AHMEDABAD: "All Hindu doctors are warned that they are not safe practising in Muslim-dominated areas.
They are thus requested to stop practising in such areas and also in the minority-trust-run hospitals with
immediate effect." This message issued by the Ahmedabad Doctors' Forum, which has about 100 active
members in the city, came as a direct fall-out of the attack on Dr Amit Mehta, who was repeatedly stabbed
in his clinic in Juhapura on Tuesday. The incident sent shock waves through the medical fraternity. "In the
past too, Hindu doctors practising in Muslim-dominated areas like Jamalpur, Gomtipur have been fatally
attacked. And Tuesday's attack on Dr Mehta should serve as a warning to Hindu doctors to quit practising
in Muslim areas," founder-member of the ADF Dr Bharat Amin told Times News Network. (Times of India
Modi still safe as CM (7)
NEW DELHI: Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi does not appear to be in the firing line despite the
embarrassrjient he has caused Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee internationally, and the mounting
pressure f|om the Opposition, not to mentioi a voice or two from among the NBA allies. "There is no
question of removing Modi at this stage. The Congress is making a mistake by pres-suring the BJP — this
will only strengthen Modi's hands," a senior BJP leader observed. At the forthcoming BJP national
executive, where Godhra and Gujarat will form part of the political resolution; a few persons are expected
to take potshots at Modi. (TOI 11.4.02)
Ahmedabad, April 10: Muslims who can are fleeing Narendra Modi's Gujarat. Shaken by the riots, IPS
officers and senior employees of government organisations have started packing their bags. M.A. Wadoo,
an ONGC official whose rented apartment was ransacked by a mob and belongings worth Rs 5.3 lakh
destroyed, has sought a transfer "on humanitarian grounds". "I lost.everything I had earned in 27 years of
service. I have so much pain within me that I cannot express. I just want to leave Gujarat. I cannot live in
perpetual fear. I cannot move about freely here. For the past 25 days, my daughter has not moved out of
this room (ONGC transit accommodation)," he said. The officer, who had gone home to Andhra Pradesh
when ONGC flew its Muslim officers out of the state for their safety, has returned only because his
daughter has to sit for the Class XII board examinations. (Telegraph 11.4.02)
