Three killed in Pak. Church attack (7)<br />
ISLAMABAD, DEC. 25. Three persons were killed and at least 10 in jured tonight when unidentified<br />
assailants hurled explosives in a United Presbyterian church in Pakistan's central Punjab province, police<br />
said. The attack took place at 8:30 p.m., when two men wearing "burqas" (veil) threw hand grenades into<br />
the church dur ing an evening Christmas service, an Interior Ministry official said here. No one has so far<br />
claimed responsibility for the incident. Security had been stepped up in Pakistan ahead of Christmas<br />
celebra tions, The attack came the same day that police announced that they I had found explosives and<br />
ammunition near a heavily-guarded fp church here. Church officials feared they had been the intended<br />
target of an attack, but went ahead with yuletide services. (Hindu 26.12.02)<br />
Inter-religion meet calls for peace, social harmony (7)<br />
New Delhi, December 25: AN INTER-RELIGION dia logue marked Christmas cel ebrations at the Sacred<br />
Heart Cathedral in the Capi tal. Besides conducting the Christmas mass, the Cathe dral also provided a<br />
platform to leaders of various reli gions to share their views. Among those who partici pated in the inter-faith<br />
meet were Delhi Archbishop Vin cent M Concessao, Swami Gokulanand of Rama Krish na Mission, Hindu<br />
leader Swami Nityanand, Jew leader Ezekiel Malekar, Dr V.K. Merchant of Bahai faith, Rev. Katsu<br />
Monuchi representing the Buddhist faith, Sadhvi Sadhna repre senting Jains and some Sikh leaders. They<br />
called for peace and harmony among all sections of society. This was the second meet of its kind. Delhi<br />
Archbishop Concessao started these meetings. "The message of Christ that religion is meant to bind<br />
people, and not divide, is meant for everyone includ ing those who are not Chris tians," said Archbishop<br />

Rampur: As many as 130 Christian families returned to Hinduism at a function held in Tanda town of<br />
Rampur district. The function, arranged by the Religion Renaissance Division of the Rashtriya<br />
Swayamsewak Sangh, was attended by many Hindu leaders. (Asian Age 27.12.02)<br />
Council condemns Christmas attacks (7)<br />
NEW DELHI, DEC. 26. The All-India Christian Council has con demned violence against Chris tians in India<br />
and Pakistan in the days preceding Christmas. In a statement here today, the council said that attacks on<br />
places of worship were "no or dinary crimes". The Christmas night attack on a church in Punjab in Pakistan,<br />
it said, "was well-planned and designed to terrorise the minorities". The bomb attack in West Bengal,<br />
in which the priest and worshippers were robbed, but no arrests made, was "equally sinister". Seeking to<br />
draw a distinction between India and Pakistan, it said anti-Christian violence was a "way of life in Pakistan<br />
and the Government did little to contain the open and more subtle social violence against minorities."<br />
What was necessary was "prompt and expeditious action by the authorities to show the world how<br />

Pak. Church attack: four detained (7)<br />
ISLAMABAD, DEC. 26. Four per sons, including a cleric preach ing at a mosque, have been detained by<br />
the Pakistan police in connection with the grenade attack on a church in the Chian-wala village of the<br />
Punjab prov ince on Christmas Day that killed three persons and injured 14. Many people, most of them<br />
children and women, were at tending special prayers in the United Presbyterian Church in Daska at the<br />
time of the attack. A police officer was quoted as saying that two of the four who have been detained are<br />
mem bers of the banned militant out fit, aish-e-Moharnmad. They had "received armed training... at a Jaish<br />
