Christians slam VHP honour for mother of Dara Singh (7)<br />

NEW DELHI, DECEMBER 22: CHRISTIAN organisa tions today expressed "utter disgust" at reports of<br />

VHP president Vishnu Hari Dalmia honouring the mother of Dara Singh, the prime accused in the killing of<br />

Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two children. The honour shows "ex treme callousness<br />

towards the feelings of the Christian community", the organisa tions said. "We expected no differ ent from<br />

this group of peo ple, who have said that they will carry out the experiment of fascist comrnunalism they<br />

showed in the Gujarat y genocide to other states as well," a statement issued by the All India Christian<br />

Council and All India Catholic Union said here.<br />

"We had, however, ex pected that national leaders such as Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee and others in<br />

BJP would feel hurt and express their outrage at this travesty," they said. (<strong>Indian</strong> Express 23.12.02)<br />

Curfew imposed in Rajasthan town (7)<br />

JAIPUR, DEC. 23.Gangapur town in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan was brought under curfew<br />

today following clashes between members of two communities the previous night. Though not relat ed, two<br />

localities in Chittorgarh district— Kapasan and Parsoli --and Kaman in Bharatpur also reported communal<br />

tension after reports of miscreants damaging idols. In another incident, related to the kidnapping of a local<br />

boy and his subsequent death, the people in Bari town of Dholpur district surrounded the local police<br />

station and damaged some public prop erty. Many persons were reportedly injured in the violence and the<br />

police action which followed. The people were demanding the re moval of the police personnel from the<br />

station for their "mishand ling" of the case which led to the death of the boy, Saurabh. Gangapur had<br />

witnesses communal clashes in March this year when a group of persons tried to stop the Moharrum<br />

procession. In the police action which followed a person was killed. That time despite a ban on his entry,<br />

the VHP leader, Pravin Togadia had slipped into the area to address a rally. Mr.Togadia had addressed a<br />

meeting in Gangapur on December 14. (Hindu 24.12.02)<br />

One killed in Vadodara violence (7)<br />

VADODARA, Dec. 24. -One person was killed and several others were injured in a fresh bout of<br />

communal violence in the sensitive Navapura area of the city tonight, two days after a new government<br />

was instal led in Gujarat. Police said the deceased, a 55-year-old man, was kil led in stone-throwing. The<br />

victim, who was reportedly riding a two-wheeler, was shifted to a nearby hospital where he was declared<br />

brought dead. Police used teargas shells to disperse members of two communities who indulged in arson<br />

and stone-pelting. What sparked off the vio lence was not immediately known, they added. (Statesman<br />

Shop set afire, curfew continues (7)<br />

JAIPUR, DEC. 25. A shop was set ablaze by miscreants last night even as an indefinite curfew continued<br />

for third consecutive day today in the troubled Gangapur area of the Swai Madhopur district, the police<br />

said. However, the blaze was promptly put out by a fire tender and no damage was reported, it said here.<br />

Meanwhile, as many as 29 people had been arrested and six cases registered in connection with<br />

Monday's violence involving members of two communities. A curfew had been imposed in the township as<br />

tension arose following the clashes which left two injured. (Hindu 26.12.02)<br />

Attack on church in West Bengal (7)<br />

Kolkata: In an unprecedent ed attack on a church in West Bengal's Nadia district, crim inals injured half a<br />

dozen people during the midnight mass on Tuesday. They also looted money and valuables from the<br />

church safe and the devotees. The police said that twenty armed criminals were in volved in the attack.<br />

However, the Bangiya Christiya Pariseba general secretary Herod Mullick said more than 40 people were
